| Show Slang | Checkpoint: The arbitrary finish line of each leg of The Race. Drivers in The Race find their way to each checkpoint via a cryptic clue delivered to them via text message. The last competitor/s to arrive at a checkpoint are normally eliminated; however there are circumstances where they will only face a penalty instead (ie; Wendy being told to eliminate Ivy). | Jump Start: The "Jump Start" is a challenge offered to the most-improved competitor/s, ranking-wise, and allows the lucky beneficiaries to skip ahead in The Race by one checkpoint. Of course, this being The Race, the chance to gain a significant lead does not come without a price - Racers wishing to benefit from the Jump Start have to take part in a task more challenging and problematic than usual.
During the portion of The Race that we've seen, the Jump Start was only offered once, to Alex & Corinna - although it's assumed this is a regular fixture of The Race. | The Race: The illegal, cross-country road race with a $32 million cash prize at the end of it. Each year, The Sponsors choose the competitors and send them the means by which to enter The Race (the race-phone). Some competitors are offered an extra incentive to enter, and win The Race - Alex Tully, for example, entered because The Sponsors took his wife, and will hand her back to him at the finish line should he win. The Race consists of many "legs", which each end in a checkpoint. It is unknown exactly how many Racers compete each year; nor why certain Racers are given a bigger reason to win than others. | The Sponsors: The unseen benefactors of The Race. It is insinuated that The Sponsors have been running The Race for many years now - indeed, we know for certain that at least twenty years ago (thanks to Corinna's flashbacks to how she lost her parents) that The Race existed. Who The Sponsors are though, and what they gain from The Race, remains a mystery.
The only contact Racers have with The Sponsors is their point-person, Mr Bright, who appears at each checkpoint to check the Racers in and deliver any necessary tips or equipment for the next leg of The Race. However, there have been cases when seemingly random, normal folk turn out to be working for The Sponsors - Allan James, the mark Corinna stole the flash-drive off of, has had his status as a Sponsor employee confirmed; while a Prestons' waitress, a fake police officer and a seemingly-friendly truck driver have all been revealed to have been put in place by The Sponsors, in order to motivate certain Racers. |
