Jane has brought donuts to work and Fred tells her that Deb's mother is in the office and he reminds her that she belongs in the past, she's no longer her mother. She goes into meet her and they talk. She says she still misses Deb more than anything, but she's fine. She says that she is hoping that she can help her get her friend Samantha Colby out of trouble. She is being blamed for stealing money from her company.
Kim comes in and Fred tells him that there is a walk in in his office and he seems like a nice guy. His name is Mike Barry and has a chimp named Sonny. He was a research chimp where he ended up being adopted to them. They are getting divorced and fighting over their monkey. His ex even called the cops.
Jane goes to talk to Samantha and it seems like she doesn't know these women. She just wants them to go away and Jane doesn't understand what just happened. Bobbi tells her that she is her daughter and she doesn't know it. She got pregnant right after high school and she gave her up for adoption. She asks how she found her and after Deb died she was what she was thinking about.
The defendant, Samantha, is being charged for being a thief. She has supposedly stolen a special kind of nail polish that changes colors. Jane offers to help her pro bono and Samantha takes it. Unfortunately, bail is $100,000 dollars but I suppose they get her out anyway. Grayson is asked be second chair in the chimp custody. Things weren't going well and Grayson decides to say that the chimp shouldn't be treated like an owned object.
Bobbi put her house up for collateral so that she could post her bail. She starts crying when Samantha comes out and she finally realizes that she is her birth mother. She tells her that her real mom died six years ago and that she was just a woman that gave birth to her and gave her away. Jane talks to her friend about it. Her sister seems angry and cold. She's nothing like who Deb was. Her friend realizes that she is jealous of this woman.
Kim and Parker are talking about how Grayson was in second chair and how he did a great job. Parker says that she should give the whole case to Grayson but it seems there is a lot of media that is being given to it. Jane, Sam, and Bobbi are having dinner and Sam digs the same meal that Deb really loved. They talk about Deb and Bobbi tells Sam that she lost Deb in a car accident. She explains that she was blamed due to being a tech and being the last employee to clock out.
Grayson and Vanessa have finally gotten together. They are having a nice seafood meal. They fill the time a lot talking about random things. She has classy tastes while he has interests in baseball. It seems to be an awkward date. Jane is having a bad day and she tells her friend Terri that this life is not the life that she is supposed to be living.
Grayson comes in and wants to know about what is going on with Bobbi. She tells him all of the information about Bobbi. He smiles because Deb would have loved a sister. She asks about Vanessa and he thinks that it might be over before it starts. She thinks that even if it didn't work out with Vanessa he should not sell himself short.
They are at court with the chimp and the husband taught Sonny sign language. Nick Coleman comes up and talks to Jane about if the harddrive is given to the victim that she will drop the charges. Sam still claims that she didn't do it. There is proof that she stole the hard drive. There is video proof that she stole it in fact. After court, they ask why she lied to them. She says that it is not what it seems. She has a degree in chemical engineering and they really stole it from her. Her boss stole the formula. She has a prototype that she can show them.
Back at chimp court and he is asking the chimp questions. He asks if he wants to live with him or Fay. Sonny starts to look really sad. Unfortunately, the judge says the chimp is property and he must go with Fay. Elsewhere, she is painting the nails of her mother. Stacy thinks that Sam should go to talk to Trilling. They decide to go meet up with him at a speaking date.
Grayson goes to meet up with Vanessa and he was hoping that they could have a second date. She thinks that they can and they are going to go on a picnic. Sam goes to plead her case to Trilling and she ends up being dragged out. Bobbi decides to go talk to Trilling because she has her nails painted. She shows him and he is amazed by it. Trilling is supposed to be going to the court hearing but it seems like he isn't there, yet. Trilling finally gets there and she calls Samantha to the stand. She says that she named the polish Rainbow due to the fact that she was inspired by Trilling.
Bobbi, Sam, and Jane are having a break and Trilling comes to her. He says he'll be in business with them again if they say it was never stolen and Sam can work again. Anne gets fired and Sam is back at work. Grayson goes to talk to Kim about the chimp case. She is upset because they lost. Fay has decided that she is giving Sonny to Mike because she can never make him laugh.
