ER: In A Different Light

Dr. Morretti continues to implement new measures that lead many of the doctors to despise him. A teacher and student arrive at the ER after a car accident, and Morris and Sam are shocked when they find out why the two were together. Abby treats a patient with a stomach ache, but finds that there may be more to the ache than meets the eye.

The bullet that Dr. Dubenko produces is probably not admissible. Evidence must generally follow a chain of custody, meaning that someone must be responsible for it and must certify this at every point between its discovery and the period when tests may be performed to determine properties of interest (in this case, barrel striations that match it to a particular weapon). If the bullet "fell into a crack in the anesthesia cart" as Dr. Dubenko intended to tell the police, that represents a gap in that chain. The very least that would happen is that Dubenko would have to testify, under oath, that this bullet was indeed the one he removed from the victim. A reasonably competent defense attorney could probably get it excluded anyway. In theory (so the defense would claim) that bullet could have been planted by the police or even, theoretically, been lost after its removal from some previous patient.
