The episode begins with Watson and Holmes attending an AA meeting. Watson looks at Holmes and he seems to be slightly lost. She touches his shoulders and he gets up yelling. He then shakes himself and leaves. Outside, he tells Watson that he hypnotized himself to avoid listening to the sob stories. Watson asks him as to why doesn’t he listen if he doesn’t want to share. He explains the Attic theory in which the brain stores only what is useful. So he blocks out the useless stuff. Episode Quotes
(Watson presses Sherlock on lying to Captain Gregson)
Sherlock: You're a highly decorated New York City police captain, would you allow a recovering drug addict access to sensitive cases?
Watson: I'm not saying...(Sherlock interrupts)
Sherlock: I can help him, but only if he lets me.
Watson: Okay, you're not understanding...(Sherlock interrupts again)
Sherlock: Telling him would be a violation of our client companion privilege I could sue.

(While Watson panics because Sherlock lit his violin on fire.)
Sherlock: Well you were right about the stress relief. I felt like Jimmy Hendrix for a second there.

(Watson and Sherlock talk while they eat)
Watson: Do you close yourself off to people and deny yourself things that might bring you pleasure, not because it makes you a better investigator, but because it is some sort of penance?
Sherlock: Penance?
Watson: For what happened in London, being addicted. I don't know, I guess it just occurred to me that it might be something someone might do and not even know it.
Sherlock: You always know it Watson. If you didn't, it wouldn't be penance.
