Professor Hood has to investigate a series of deformed fetus cadavers buried together with a cross. There were several other findings with the same DNA across eastern Europe before and the initiator of these experiments was named Gepetto.
Professor Hood is called to prevent a lethal virus from becoming a global pandemic. A crypt worker was first diagnosed with the virus and the archaeological site had to be closed down, but one of the quarantined workers can't cope with his situation.
Professor Hood meets an old friend who became seriously paranoid over his work. After his friend disappears, Hood senses more behind the issue and tries to find out more about the mysterious research of his friend.
A doctor claims that the water from a local spring has cured the cancer of one of his patients. Soon the spring is overrun by people who search for cures of their illnesses. Professor Hood is convinced that these claims are bogus but the case becomes more complicated as the doctor commits suicide.
