Eli is heading for work but stops at the newsstand outside his apartment. The owner complains that although Eli tells him everything about his life, Eli knows nothing about him. However, Eli spaces off into a vision where he's at a street rally at night where hundreds of people are cheering a distinguished black man, David Mosely, who Eli doesn't recognize. The crowd is chanting "Live Brave!" which is Mosely's slogan.
Eli snaps out of the vision and goes to Dr. Chen, who suggests he find out who Mosely is in real life. At the office, Eli asks Patti to do a search but she and Maggie are watching streaming video of Pete the chimpanzee. It turns out he's been separated from his male mate, Steve, because of right-wing protestors. She agrees to do the search if Eli gets Pete and Steve back together again.
At the morning staff meeting, Jordan is holding forth when senior partner Marci Klein arrives. She expresses some false sympathy for Eli's aneurysm and disdain that Jordan is meeting with the entire staff.
After the meeting, Matt asks Eli for tips on dating Taylor. Eli sets him up by lying that Taylor loves animals and Matt should take on the Pete and Steve case with her to get on her good side.
Patti has located fifty-three David Moselys but Eli realizes which one is the man from his vision: the one in prison. It turns out that Keith Bennett formerly defended David but when Eli talks to Keith, Keith isn't interested in what happened to his former client. Eli goes to see Mosely who needs a lawyer: the warden has denied him a parole hearing after he led a hunger strike against overcrowding at the prison. He mentions "living brave," confirming he's the man from Eli's vision.
Eli talks to Keith and asks for his help since his specialty is criminal law. Keith reluctantly agrees. Meanwhile, Marci confronts Jordan and informs him that revenues at WPK have been declining in the last three quarters, and she blames the client loss on Jordan indulging Eli's eccentricities.
Matt surprises Taylor by bringing her in to see their new client and her caretaker, Dr. Maxford. Taylor is less then thrilled to be face-to-face with a chimpanzee, as she particularly hates monkeys. Meanwhile, Eli and Keith meet with Warden Brown at the prison, but he basically tells them he isn't interested in hearing about David's complaints and is unconcerned when they threaten legal action.
Back at the office, Taylor goes after Eli for lying to Matt about her, and she figures he's jealous. She decides to work with Matt just to spite Eli. He and Keith are called back to the prison: David is in the infirmary after a beating at the hands of the Aryan Brotherhood. The warden had him transferred into the Brotherhood's wing as revenge for talking to lawyers. Furious, Eli and Keith start a class-action suit and get the associates to help. However, they're interrupted when Marci announces that participating will receive no credit for their pro bono work. Only Maggie decides to stand by Eli and help with David's case.
Matt and Taylor go to court to get a hearing and Matt makes up a fake chimpanzee tort argument. The judge, amused, decides to hear the case. That night, Eli and Maggie are going over the prison files when her fiancé Scott. She quickly talks to him and hangs up, apparently uncomfortable about speaking with him in front of Eli. He wonders if she rushed into the engagement after they kissed, but she fervently denies it.
Keith is taking depositions at the prison and gets several prisoners to sign affidavits about their treatment. He talks to David and it turns out that Keith abandoned him after David refused to accept a reduced-time plea because he was innocent. Keith warns David that now he's all that he's got and David gives testimony that previously he was transferred into the Aryan Brotherhood wing after protesting his cellmate's lack of treatment for appendicitis. David was beaten and his cellmate died in his cell.
A furious Patti visits Matt and Taylor and tells them that Pete is getting sicker, and she isn't letting them leave until they figure out a legal defense for him. Going by Taylor's reaction, Matt realizes that she hates monkeys and is staying on the case to make Eli jealous.
Eli escorts Maggie to her car and has another vision of the Mosely "Live Brave" rally. He sees Mosely thanking Eli, Keith, and a Daryl Rhodes that Eli doesn't know. Eli sees himself and Keith in the crowd, and Maggie… who is his wife, with their child.
In court, Matt and Taylor have Dr. Maxford testify about Pete and Steve bonding, and the fact that Pete has been depressed and is mutilating himself. Pete strokes Taylor, breaking down her resistance against animals. The opposing counsel, Cathy Borilla, notes that Pete once bit Dr. Maxford but she didn't press charges, so clearly she doesn't think of Pete as something that should receive legal right.
Eli and Keith go to court but the prisoners perjure themselves and refuses to stand by their affidavits. It's clear that Warden Brown has threatened them if they testify against him. Afterward, Keith apologizes to Mosely for abandoning him earlier and not giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Eli is trying to locate the mysterious Daryl Rhodes and suggests that Maggie leave so that he doesn't break up her relationship with Scott, since he's seen a future where Eli is Maggie's husband. Maggie is hurt at his abrupt tone but convinces the other associates to help go through the files and locate Rhodes.
The next day in court, Eli calls Daryl Rhodes to the stand. He was an administrative assistant at the prison, and Brown had him transferred when he protested the prisoners' treatment. Rhodes provides documented evidence of all the abusive treatment that Brown put on the prisoners.
With no other choice, Taylor and Matt call Pete the Chimp to the stand. The judge allows it and Taylor shows Pete a photo of Steve, which he hugs. They then bring Steve in and it's clear the two chimpanzees are in love with each other. The judge rules in Pete's favor, realizing that she'll be overturned but they'll have several months together until Borilla can file an appeal.
Eli and Keith meet with the warden and his attorney, and negotiate for remodeling of the prison, damages paid to the prisoners, and a parole hearing for Mosely. Finally, they insist that Brown resign, or they'll file criminal charges. Brown gives in and Jordan congratulates Eli on the win. Eli is worried that he hurt Jordan's standing in the firm but Jordan assures him it's fine. Marci comes in and complains that they're new pro-criminal stance has cost them five more high-profile clients. As the kicker, she tells Eli that the governor refused Mosely's parole and hints she had something to do with it, and announces she'll be staying around.
Keith meets with Mosely and expresses his regrets about the governor's actions. Mosely insists that "living brave" is all about the ability to keep going and thanks Keith for his help. In return, Keith offers to help tutor him in law so that Mosely can get his parole in the future.
Pete and Steve are taken to a private preserve where Taylor, Matt, and Patti go to see them off. Taylor has overcome her dislike of monkeys and, alone with Matt, agrees to go on a date with him if he can get them into an exclusive restaurant.
Eli is depressed, since there doesn't seem to be any way that Mosely will fulfill his future destiny. Maggie reassures him that they have no control over the future, which is why it is the future. As Eli walks home, he gets another vision of Mosely and the rally. Again he sees himself, Maggie, and their son, but realizes that the rally is for him, for everything he's done… or will do in the future.
