Eli undergoes surgery to remove his brain aneurysm but he starts to flat line as the doctors try to revive him. The monitor goes flat…
…and Eli wakes up in his bed, recovering from his dream. He finds himself at work where he meets Matt going up in the elevator. Matt tries to cheer him up without much luck, and when they arrive in the offices Keith and Patti are also nice to him. Eli finally tells Patti to be mean with him then meets with David Green, a Jewish man who come to Eli to ask for help dying. It’s not assisted suicide, however, but rather he believes God has told him to stop taking chemotherapy for his cancer. David's wife Rebecca is going to court to become his appointed medical proxy and force him to receive chemo.
Later, Eli finds himself at Nathan's office where he asks his brother to serve as his medical proxy. Nathan reluctantly agrees.
However…
Nathan is standing over Eli's comatose body in a hospital bed. The operation left Eli brain-dead and everything he thinks he's been seeing is a vision within his coma.
In Eli's vision, Maggie comes in to thank him for saving her fiancé Scott. She wants to second-chair on the Green case, but Eli is reluctant since he wonders if her concern is really for him. She assures him it isn't and he agrees to let her second-chair, while admitting that it's the waiting that his him worried, not the living or dying.
The Greens meet in conference and Rebecca, a rabbi, insists that she and her children need him. David insists that he has to give up the therapy. Afterward, Jordan escort Eli to a conference room while talking about how he once thought that Eli was shallow and mercenary, but has changed over the years. In the conference room, the staff is assembled and gives Eli a round of applause when Jordan announces is the new junior partner in charge of
pro bono cases, and he is getting the promotion because of Eli's newfound compassion.
In the real world, Jordan is standing over Eli and telling him to wake up.
In Eli's vision, Rebecca testifies that she believes that God wants David to keep on living. Her testimony sways the judge and Green wonders if Eli is having second thoughts. Eli wonders what it was like for David to hear God and David says he didn't exactly hear him but rather he felt a sense of peace as if a great burden were lifted from him.
Eli finds himself at his new office when Taylor comes in. Eli apologizes to her, noting that when he was ruthless and cold-hearted he trampled all over her. She admits that he was the one who taught her the true meaning of love, and reassures him about the surgery saying he's not dead yet.
In the real world, Taylor is sitting at Eli's bedside and tells him he's not dead yet. Nathan explains that the aneurysm burst during surgery and left Eli in a vegetative state. Taylor doesn't want him to use his authority as medical proxy to let Eli die, but Nathan notes that it's about Eli and his wishes, not what Nathan feels he should do.
Eli is at Chen's shop and wonders why everyone is being so nice to him. He notes that while David seems to be at peace, God keeps tormenting Eli with visions. Chen admits that he never truly believed in God, until came into his shop. Chen considers the matter…
…and then wakes up in the real world from his dream. He goes to see Nathan, saying that Eli is still alive and tried to contact him in his dreams. He warns Nathan that Eli doesn't know that the surgery went bad, but he's starting to. When Nathan is skeptical, Chen notes that they've both seen evidence of Eli's visions and nothing is impossible. To further convince Nathan, Chen shows him the photo of himself and Mr. Stone. Convinced, Nathan agrees to give Eli 24 more hours.
In Eli's vision, David testifies that he's happier then ever despite the fact he's going off of the chemo. Under cross-examination David is forced to admit his experience isn't a rational one, but he points out that any miracle can be explained scientifically if you don't believe otherwise. Afterward, Rebecca meets with Eli and asks him to convince David to fight for his life. Eli tries but David insist that he's fighting for the life he has now that God has touched him. Now he is at peace with himself and has time for his family, when before he was a driven businessman. He doesn't want to lose that peace.
Eli makes his closing argument and insists that God speaks to those with faith. He admits that he has had visions and has come to gain faith as well, and that anything that can inspire people can't be delusional or wrong.
In the real world, 24 hours have passed and Jordan meets with Taylor. They prepare to go to Eli's bed and Jordan admits that Eli has changed him, and changed the firm, for the better. He asks Taylor to be part of the new WPK and she agrees.
In Eli's vision, the court finds in Green's favor and grants him the right to choose how to die. Eli then finds himself in his hospital bed, as in the next bed Green dies peacefully with Rebecca at his side.
As everyone gathers at Eli's bedside to grant him a final farewell, Eli finds himself in Chen's shop again. He's started to realize that he simply moves from place to place without traveling, and hasn't changed his clothes, so he must be in a coma. "Chen" agrees, noting that he's just a figment of Eli's imagination. He tells Eli that he can die if he wishes and the world will go on, but Eli realizes there is more for him to do. "Chen" offers an acupuncture treatment to help him get back, but Eli finds himself in a black void face-to-face with… George Michael. George doesn’t have an answer for Eli's question of how to get back to life, but starts to sing. All of Eli's friends arrive and start singing about faith as well. Eli remembers everything that's happened to him in the last few months, looks up… and in the real world, emerges from his coma.
