Eli and Nate are jogging and Nate wants to take Eli to Marvel Stadium for its last game, the way that their father took them as children. Nate figures that something is going on with the fact that he hasn’t had any visions and Eli’s aneurysm is back. As they jog through a tunnel, Eli assures his brother he hasn’t had any visions… and then sees a woman emerge, singing jazz by Duke Ellington. Eli finds himself in a nightclub as the woman sings to him.
Eli describes the vision to Frank and says the vision seemed directed at him. Frank suggests that it’s just a result of Eli not having had any recent visions, so this one was more vivid. Eli goes back to the office to get Maggie to help him locate the woman from his description. When he arrives he tells Patti to put out an e-mail about the fact his aneurysm is back. Patti thinks it requires a more personal touch. Eli finds Maggie but they’re interrupted when Thomas Hayes arrives to solicit Eli’s aid: his son died and he wants to sue to make sure his son doesn’t receive military honors. He explains that his son died of a heart attack and doesn’t deserve the honors, but his wife is giving the military permission for military honors.
At the stadium, Nate and Eli enjoy the game until Eli spots the woman from his vision behind him, tripping and spilling food everywhere. As the crowd boos her, Eli draws their attention away from her by cheering the away team. Afterward, Grace helps clean him up and Eli suggests that he was meant to see her, but she wonders what he’s talking about. She says that she’s a non-profit lawyer representing third-world countries and takes Eli’s card, but quickly makes her escape. That night, Eli meets with Frank who notes that perhaps the vision is a chance to bring some joy into his life.
Eli meets Jordan as he comes into the office. They had earlier discussed taking the firm in a more socially responsible direction. Jordan has a new manifesto that will involve turning the entire firm into pro bono representation. Marci and Martin are not thrilled at his plan. He shows them their original mission statement and notes that they’re no longer living up to their ideals. He plans to take the matter to the board and warns them not to get in the way.
The Hayes meet for the deposition and Thomas’ wife Emily insists that she knows what her son wanted, and Thomas has never let her made any decision concerning their son. After Emily leaves, Thomas notes that it’s the most Emily has said to him in three days. Patti interrupts to inform Eli that Grace is calling. Eli takes the call and she wants to know if he sent her the ticket to the game, along with a note saying “You are not alone.” Eli doesn’t know about the ticket but asks her to lunch. She says she’s leaving for Kenya in two days and quickly hangs up. Eli goes to her office to see her and brings lunch. She offers to have lunch with her on the way to filing a brief.
Taylor talks to Jordan and expresses her concern, warning that Marci and Martin won’t let him cost the firm money. He insists that everything requires some disturbance but they’ll have to ride it out. He asks if she’s with him and she assures him she always will be.
As they eat, Grace explains that she used to be a corporate lawyer and now represents third-world countries. She knows about his visions from God and asks again if he sent her the ticket. He says again he didn’t and asked her why she used it. She says she wanted a little magic in her life. As she leaves, he gets her to accept a dinner date with him along with jazz. Surprised, she admits she likes jazz and Eli promises to tell her how he knew.
In court, Thomas explains that his son didn’t want a military burial because the war was one of choice, not necessity. Emily’s lawyer cross-examines and notes that Thomas, ex-military, has requested a military burial. She notes that his son would have despised the hypocrisy.
Jordan arrives at the partnership meeting to discover that Marci and Martin are freezing his access to the firm pending a psychological evaluation.
Eli is trying to find a club with jazz that he can get Grace to, and Maggie calls him to court. Emily reveals that she has a video of her son from a week before her son was due to come home. He mentions Sgt. Ellington and seems cheery and upbeat and Eli objects. In conference Thomas still insists that Danny didn’t want a military burial, and Eli pursues the connection to Sgt. Wellington from his vision. Thomas served with Sgt. Ellington but denies anything else is going on. He storms out, telling Eli he’s done enough.
Matt informs Eli that Jordan is being evaluated and Eli goes to tell Jordan he wants to represent him. Taylor wants to represent her father, but Jordan insists that he made his own decision and this one has been overdue and he plans to conduct his own defense. Once he leaves, Taylor blames Eli for her father putting his firm at risk.
At dinner at a club that matches the one in his visions, Eli explains Jordan's situation to Grace, who barely avoids setting something on fire. The song from his vision plays but Grace doesn’t recognize it. Eli asks her to dance with him and she initially refuses, but ends up on the dance floor with him. He explains about his vision and how he saw her as a confident woman. She admits she feels that way at the moment. He asks her why she changed her life two years ago to become a non-profit lawyer but she refuses to ruin the moment with a sad story. He says he wishes she wasn’t leaving but she doesn’t want to complicate things.
Eli returns to his office to find Thomas waiting for him. Thomas asks him how he knew about Ellington, and explains that Danny had a heart condition, but Sgt. Ellington found a doctor to overlook Danny’s condition. Danny then went into the military rather than disappoint his father. Thomas shows Eli a letter from Danny saying that he wanted a father who wouldn’t pull strings to put his son in harm’s way. Danny says that he’s not a soldier and he felt sick every time he put on the uniform, and he wanted Thomas to know it.
Eli gives the letter to the judge who reads it to Emily. The judge accepts the letter as evidence of Danny’s wishes. Emily tells Thomas to never come near her again and leaves. Eli is less than thrilled and then realizes that Patti never sent the e-mail out saying his aneurysm was back. Patti snaps at him and he makes a public announcement to the entire staff. Maggie thinks he’s self-pitying himself again. Eli snaps at her but finally admits he’s mad at Grace for leaving. Patti informs him that Nate’s on the phone and Eli heads over to see him. He confronts his brother and realizes that he bought the ticket for Grace and sent it to her anonymously. Nate shows him their father’s journal, which he discovered in the garage. Their father wrote down everything he saw, and it’s all about Eli’s present. He knew that Eli would take the aneurysm back, and it said that Eli would meet Grace at the stadium. Their father didn’t want the visions to ruin Eli’s life, and he was fated to meet Grace. When Eli tells him that Grace is leaving, Nate realizes that Eli doesn’t know and shows him a page of the diary.
Eli goes to the airport and tells her that he knows about her heart condition: she has the same condition Danny did, which can cause sudden death. He thinks he’s met her to save her but she’s skeptical. She admits that she’s fallen for him but he insists they weren’t brought together for nothing. She agrees, saying they were brought together as a reminder there’s something for each of them. They kiss and she says goodbye, but admits they can’t know what will happen in the future.
