Eli and Ashley Cardiff go on a date to a wine-tasting demonstration but soon break up into giggles. Afterward, Eli notes that she's been getting them into trouble wherever they go, including a bed in a museum where she wanted to make out. Ashley admits she's had trouble keeping herself form ripping his clothes off but he notes they barely know each other. They go back to Eli's apartment and rip each others' clothing off while talking about their backgrounds.
After sex, Eli wakes up to loud music outside his window. He goes out on the balcony and sees San Francisco 31 years in the future. There's a giant billboard broadcasting a scientist, Irving Wallender, presenting the Nobel Peace Prize to a woman, Genny Clarke, for her development of cold fusion. The people in the broadcast applaud and Eli does to, and Ashley comes out to ask what he's doing. He tries to claim he's applauding her but she doesn’t believe it.
Eli sees Frank in the middle of a session. Eli is drinking up a chai latte that he bought from the Eastern Wellness Center down the street. Frank is less than thrilled that he's losing business to the owner, Dr. Lee, and notes that he studied with her under Nurhachi, the master of the Dark Arts. Frank soon figures out Eli had sex and Eli thanks him for setting him and Ashley up. He goes to the office where he's got Patti running Google searches for possibly Genny Clarkes. She also soon figures out Eli had sex.
Taylor insists on representing Jordan in his divorce case against her stepmother, Ellen. He doesn't want her involved but she insists on doing it and he gives in.
Patti finds a Jenny Clark in New Jersey who is a scientist, and a Genelle Clarke who works at a local Work Bench hardware store and who was a college science student. Eli goes to see Genelle first at her trailer court and asks if she needs a lawyer, but she insists she doesn't and thinks he's a weirdo. They're interrupted when the FBI pull up, arrest her, and start a search of her trailer. Eli represents himself as her lawyer and discovers she's being arrested as a terrorist. He calls in Keith and they meet with Genny in jail. The government is charging her with possession of nuclear materials with the intent to make a bomb. Genny denies it and is surprised to learn Eli knows about her research into cold fusion. However, she refuses to answer any of his questions.
Maggiemeets with her client Ashley to discuss her campaign to put money into environmental causes. Ashley gets a text message from Eli and asks Maggie about him. Maggie is startled to learn they slept together but says that Eli is great. However, when Ashley mentions the applause incident and wonders if it has to do with Eli's aneurysm, Maggie says that Eli is "special." Ashley is happy to hear about it, figuring she wants to keep Eli around for a while.
Taylor and Jordan meet with Ellen and her attorney, Elliott Russell. Ellen is demanding a large part of Jordan's money as well as the house. He thinks she deserves it but Taylor objects, noting Jordan is starting up a new firm and can't meet her demands. Faced with a reluctant client, Taylor tells Ellen they'll get back to her and tells her that she should be ashamed.
Nate and Eli check out Nate's new office space, which he's buying with the hospital settlement. Nate soon figures out Eli had sex and wonders if she knows about his visions. Eli says he's been reluctant to bring it up but he's going to tell her at dinner that night. Nate warns that she might not take it well but Eli refuses to hide it from anyone, including her.
On their dinner date, Eli explains that he receives visions from God. Ashley is taken aback to say the least, and Eli realizes he's made a mistake. The next day he goes to see Frank, who wonders what Eli expected to happen. Eli notices that Frank is cranky, and Frank admits that customers have been switching over to Dr. Lee. Frank snaps at Eli for not making an appointment and Eli leaves.
As Taylor and Matt shop for maternity clothing, Taylor discusses her father's case and Matt suggests that since she's gotten along well with her stepmother, she try to talk things out with her. Taylor admits that Matt is right.
At Genny's trial, FBI Agent Maine testifies they searched her trailer and discovered that she had bought home supply equipment and stripped all of the radioactive material from it. They believe she was making a bomb out of it. Eli cross-examines and determines that the FBi didn't find anything to suggest a bomb or a terrorist manifesto. Outside, Eli wants Genny to take the stand but she refuses, insisting that she's interested in science, not what other people think of her. Eli convinces her to testify against her better judgment.
Taylor talks to Ellen at her home and explains that Jordan doesn’t have the money to meet her demands because he's starting up the new firm. Ellen says she doesn't want Jordan to do what he did to Taylor's mother Susie: hide his assets in off-shore accounts and have her found incompetent to be a mother so he'd get custody of Taylor. Taylor doesn't believe it at first, insisting that Susie left her, but Ellen explains that Susie only left after Jordan hounded her into doing so.
Maggie visits Eli at his office and they uncomfortably try to make sure they're just talking as friends. She brings up his relationship with Eli and that she didn't think Ashley was right for him. When Eli realizes that she told Ashley he was "special," he figures that's what colored Ashley's attitude toward him. He wonders if Maggie is jealous. Angry, Maggie tells him she's through protecting him and leaves.
In court, Genny testifies that she's working on the development of cold fusion. Eli gets an affadavit from a professor confirming the value of her work. Pleased, Eli calls Ashley and convinces her to meet him for dinner with Nate and Beth. Back in court, the government attorney questions Genny and determines she has no friends and stayed to herself. He asks why she didn't take her work to the government or a corporation and she insists that they just want to take it and hide it, that they have too much at risk to let cold fusion fall into the hands of the general public. The judge asks for a meeting in chambers and notes that while Genny isn't a terrorist, she will still have to serve a minimum of 25 years in jail for having illegal materials. He tells Eli to convince his client to convince her to settle for the prison time on the illegal holding charge.
Eli meets with Nate and Beth, but Ashley is nowhere to be seen. As they have a few drinks. Beth admits that Eli, her former lover, is a good catch. Ashley finally texts Eli and tells him that she won't be coming to the dinner. As Eli goes to get another drink, he sees plane tickets to Vegas on the table and Nate and Beth explain that they plan to elope.
When Taylor cancels their lunch date, Jordan comes to see her and she tells him what she knows about his divorce, and that she confirmed Ellen's story with Jordan's former divorce lawyer. Jordan admits he isn't proud of what he did, and that's why he's so desperate to change now. He believed that Susan wasn't a reliable mother and he didn't want to lose Tyalor, but he tried to keep Susan involved in Taylor's life. Taylor tells him to get out.
Eli returns to his apartment to find Ashley in the lobby. She apologizes for ditching him but tells him she's breaking up with him: that she doesn't want to be involved with someone with so much baggage.
A depressed Eli goes to see Frank and tells him what happened, and Frank says it's for the best if Ashley couldn't accept Eli for who and what he is. Eli doesn't see it that way and worries that he'll always be alone. He asks Frank to use the Dark Truth acupuncture technique to let him see his own future and determine if he'll ever find someone. Frank refuses to endangers Eli's life.
Keith checks in with Eli on Genny's case and admits he's skeptical that they'll discover cold fusion in even 400 years, much less 40. He's talked to a Los Alamos expert, Irving Wallender, and Eli recognizes the name from his vision. He gets Wallender to read Genny's notebook and confirm that she's close to a breakthrough. Wallender agrees to get the charges dropped of Genny comes to work for him. She refuses and Eli asks to talk to her in private. She says she doesn't want to work for the Man or give her gift away, but Eli points out that her gift is for the world, and she has to give it to everyone.
Jordan and Taylor meet with Ellen, and Ellen agrees to give her what she wants. As they leave, Ellen notices the rift between Taylor and her father. She tells her stepdaughter that Taylor is Jordan's whole world.
Genny takes the job at Los Alamos. Nate talks to Eli and learns that Ashley dropped his brother. Eli assures him that he’ll still be the best man at Nate and Beth’s wedding.
Jordan goes to see Taylor and admits there’s no excuse for what he did to her mother. However, his wife was no better and he didn’t believe she was capable of raising a child. When she left without making any effort to contact Taylor, despite Jordan’s efforts to persuade her, he believed he was right in his analysis. He apologizes to Taylor but she says it won’t be enough.
Eli goes to see Dr. Lee, who is half-Chinese and half-Caucasian. He gets around asking her to administer the Dark Truth technique. She first denies knowing it but Eli presses the matter. She warns that it’s dangerous but Eli offers to pay her a thousand dollars to perform the procedure. She gives in and inserts the needles, and Eli finds himself in a vision of Nate and Beth… and Beth is telling Nate the wedding’s off.
