The novel is by Ralph Emerson and the only one published during his lifetime. The novel is about an unnamed African American, who views himself invisible to society.

Analysis |

Invisible Man
If Chris had bothered to read the book, he might have noticed the parallels between him and The Invisible Man. Both were intelligent African American males stuck at the crossroads of society.
Both struggled to be accepted by mainstream society, although Chris's progress is easier than The Invisible Man's. In the African American community both are either accepted or rejected depending on who they encounter.
One could view The Invisible Man as the predecessor to Everybody Hates Chris itself. The novel shows the beginnings of process to fit everywhere was tough, Everybody Hates Chris shows how far that process has come after 30 plus years.
