Marie Barone, played by Doris Roberts
Marie is Raymond and Robert's mother. She is the master of the backhanded compliment. She can zing someone (usually Raymond or Debra) with the most derisive insult, but make it sound like she was being complimentary and then takes umbrage when they don't fawn all over her with appreciation. She's an expert at verbally castrating the men in her life (husband & sons) and putting them in her place. Her daughter-in-law (Debra) seems to be the only one that will stand up to her manipulative ways. Because she lives directly across the street from Raymond, she has no compuntcions about barging right into their house unannounced without regard to what might be going on. |
