Episode Notes |
| |
On the DVD version of the episode there's an extra scene that didn't air on FOX.
When Peter and Chris are sitting in the car waiting for Randy Fulcher, Peter imitates an anus by putting a snickers bar in his mouth, covering his head with his sweatshirt & slowly pushing the Snickers bar out of the opening. |

Episode Goofs |
| |
Cleveland was able to fool people into believing he was Richard Nixon despite the fact Nixon's been dead since 1994. |
|
 |
Cultural References |
| |
The title “The Tan Aquatic with Steve Zissou” is a take off of the title of the 2004 movie “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” starring Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe & Jeff Goldblum | Cleveland wears a Richard Nixon mask to prevent people from knowing there's a black man at the country club. Nixon was the 37th President of the United States and the only President to ever resign from office. | Britney Spears' parenting is questioned. Ironically almost a year after this episode aired, Britney lost visitation rights & custody of her 2 children. | Herbert: “What's going on in my pants? Looks like we got 6 more weeks of winter”
Allusion to Groundhog Day, the holiday not the movie.
If the groundhog, named Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his borrow and sees his shadow Winter will continue for 6 more weeks. If it doesn't see it, Spring will come early.
The joke (obviously) being Kyle is making Herbert's *ahem* “groundhog” emerge. | Lois: “Peter, this is more irresponsible than the time you fed your Mogwai after midnight”
Reference to the 1984 film “Gremlins” starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates & Corey Feldman.
The creature Peter is holding is named “Gizmo” and (as Lois said) one of the rules to owning a Mogwai was not feeding him after midnight.
The scene (clearly) differs from the movie because instead of “Gizmo” turning into the evil Mogwai named “Stripe”, he turns into Fran Drescher, the star of the CBS sitcom “The Nanny”.
The microwave inspired death of Fran Drescher is in fact the way one of the evil Mogwai's is killed in the movie. | Stewie: “Wow, look at me. I'm a young Eartha Kitt”
“Eartha Kitt” (1927-2008) is known for her unique voice & her possibly most famous role as the second “Catwoman” in the tv series “Batman” (1966-1968) which of course also starred the Mayor of Quahog, Adam West | Stewie {impersonating Eartha Kitt}: “President Johnson, bring our boys home from Southeast Asia it's an unwinnable war”
Stewie is speaking of President Lyndon B. Johnson & the war he mentions is the Vietnam War which Johnson inherited after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy | TaB Cola
Stewie drinks TaB and parodies one of the products' commercials when he takes a sip and looks into the camera | Tylenol PM | Young Peter: “My book report is on The Giving Tree”
“The Giving Tree” was first published in 1964. It is a children's book written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein
| Terry The Tiger: “They're Food!”
Terry the Tiger is a take off on Kellogg's Frosted Flakes real mascot Tony the Tiger who's catch phrase is “They're Great!” | Martin Landau discusses director Roman Polanski and the fact he was convicted of the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl and fled to Europe to escape jail as well as the Planned Parenthood Organization | Devon: “...it huh, stars a little actress named Joan Van Ark, maybe you've heard of her?”
Joan Van Ark may be best known for playing Valene Ewing on “Dallas” and later on “Knots Landing” | Devon: “It's essentially 'Brokeback Mountain' from the horses point of view”
2005's “Brokeback Mountain” starred Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger as cowboys who discover their love for each other while secluded in the mountains of Wyoming.
The scene Devon wrote from the horses point of view would have been the first time Ennis & Jack have sex, which lead to the horses strong reaction.
| Peter: “You're making me sound like Michael Stipe”
Michael Stipe is the lead vocalist for the alternative rock band R.E.M. | Stewie: “Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go down to Kokomo, but not fast cause Stewie takes it slow”
While tanning, Stewie sings The Beach Boys song “Kokomo” w/ slightly altered lyrics | Mr. Furley: “Brian?”
Brian: “Oh uh... Hi Mr Furley”
Mr. Furley: “Never mind, I'll come back later”
Mr. Ralph Furley was played by Don Knotts on the sitcom “Three's Company” (1977-1984).
Often times on the show innocent things would be misconstrued as something sexual as in Brian squirting lotion on Stewie | Peter: “You got Legos, aw sweet. Lois only buys me Mega Blocks”
Lego, of course, is the iconic toy consisting of small interlocking plastic bricks.
Mega Blocks really are the same thing as Lego, however, Mega Blocks do come in different sizes. | Peter: “Lois, I've done it again”
The “THE END - A Peter Griffin Cartoon - Made In Hollywood, USA” end title card is an allusion to the ending of Warner Bros' “Merrie Melodies” cartoons where it would read “That's All Folks”. The scene even imitates the “Merrie Melodies” ending music. | Stewie: “Jim Henson had a wait-and-see attitude and look what happened to him. Now we have wrong sounding Muppets”
Jim Henson started feeling ill around May 4th, 1990. He went to the doctor on May 12th but no evidence of pneumonia was found so he was simply sent home w/ some aspirin.
Early morning May 15th he suffered from shortness of breath and coughing up blood but still didn't want to go to the hospital.
Finally at 4am May 15th he went to the hospital where he suffered organ failure and eventually died on May 16th.
The two Muppets characters in the scene are Kermit the Frog and Swedish Chef both voiced by Jim Henson.
Fozzie Bear makes an appearance at the very end of the episode with a very deep voice.
However, he wasn't voiced by Jim, but by Frank Oz | Brian: {reading} “Visit Chicago Museum of Art.”
“Okay we can do that”
Stewie goes to the art museum where he becomes engrossed in the same Seurat painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”, as the character Cameron (Alan Ruck) did from the movie, “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” (1986).
The scene is identical, even the music. | Joe: “Peter, put me down!”
Peter: “I told you, not until you sing”
The song Peter forces Joe to sing is “The Lonely Goatherd” from Rodgers and Hammerstein's “The Sound of Music” | Randy Fulcher: “I have M.S.”
Peter: “You hear that Chris, this guy's got a monkey scrotum and he's bragging about it”
Randy actually has “Multiple Sclerosis” |
