Episode Quotes |
| |
Peter: Let's just say the car was a steal.
Lois: Say that again.
Peter: The car was a steal.
Lois: This time without winking.
Peter: The car was a steal.... wink. | Lois: I just wish my opinion mattered to you.
Peter: Well, the important thing is, it matters to you, and that's the greatest gift of all. | The Don: I have asked you here tonight so that you can perform a service
Peter: Oh, what are you gonna make me do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? Cause I'm married ya know. | Lois: Together we can do anything: face any foe, overcome any obstacle.
Peter: Yeah, climb any mountain, rent any video, dial any phone. And not just our phone, Lois, other people's phones. Decent phones, God-fearing phones, phones that everybody else gave up on, but we knew better because we were a team!
Brian: What the hell are you talking about? | Car's navigation system: Turn right at fork in road. In Soviet Russia, road forks you! | Peter: A guy at work bought a car out of the paper. Ten years later, Bam! Herpes. | Lois: I am not a crazy broad!
Peter: Oh, no, no, Lois, he didn't mean you're crazy like Elizabeth Taylor. He meant you're crazy, like that glue. You stick to things, y'know, like an adhesive. That's all he meant. | Lois: Peter, this car has dents in it, and it's got a cardboard steering wheel.
Peter: Just a second honey.
Lois: And look, there's no engine! It just has a drawing of an engine!
Car salesman: But it only had one previous owner....James Bond!
Peter: I'll take it! | Car salesman: I'm Doug. Nice to meet you. Whoa, have you lost weight??
Peter: No, it's still there, I'm just parting it on the side. |

Episode Goofs |
| |
Paulie's blazer changes from being together, to torn apart after he meets Peter. | Apparently, the car Peter buys only has a drawing of an engine in it. However, Peter drives it a few feet before crashing. The car shouldn't have been able to move at all with only a drawing of an engine in it. | The new car appears to be a Sedan in one scene, yet in another it's obviously a Volkswagen Beetle. | The hubcaps on Peter's car have 5 spokes at first, then 6, then back to 5. | Peter is behind Lois, who is sitting on the couch, then Meg comes in to talk about her school play and he is suddenly on the couch next to her. |

The episode title, “There's Something About Paulie”, is a take off of the title of the 1998 Ben Stiller (1965-) / Cameron Diaz (1972-) romantic comedy “There's Something About Mary” | Peter: “Aww but you meet such colorful characters in taxis, like Alex Reger and Tony and that funny foreign guy who works in the garage”
The cutaway following Peter's line is that of the American sitcom “TAXI” (1978-1983).
The characters mentioned are “Alex Reger” played by Judd Hirsch (1935-), “Tony(Banta)” played by Tony Danza (1951-) and the “funny foreign guy” Peter mentions is the character “Latka Gravas” who was played by Andy Kaufman (1949-1984) complete w/ Latka's catch phrase, “Tank you very much”.
However Hong Kong director, actor & martial arts master, Jackie Chan replaces Latka in the cutaway.
The characters of “Louie DePalma”, played by Danny DeVito (1944-) & “Elaine Nardo” played by Marilu Henner also appear in this cutaway. | Peter: “Okay so I tried on your bra. The fellas were putting on a show, I didn't think I'd make a good Gigi either but God help me I was flattered”
“Gigi” is a 1958 musical film starring Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier & Hermione Gingold. | The sitcom “Dharma & Greg” (1997-2002) is parodied in this episode | Peter: “Hey Cleveland, come here and check out my on board computer navigation system.
Standard, Spanish, Yakov Smirnoff”
Yakov Smirnoff (1951-) is a stand up comedian who hit the height of his popularity in the 1980's.
In his comedy act he would use irony and word play to contrast life under the Communist regime in his native Soviet Union with life in the United States | Peter: “There is no mob. You're thinking of the mob from the movies”
The mob movie cutaway is that of the 1990 movie “Goodfellas” and the character Tommy DeVito played by Joe Pesci (1943-).
During Tommy's speech, he mentions famous American comedian George Carlin (1937-2008), the American sitcom “Spin City” (1996-2002) & American comedienne Rita Rudner (1953-) | The magazine Entertainment Weekly is featured in this episode | Peter: “Is he a friendly Don, like that Don Deluise?”
Peter is thinking of comedic actor Dom DeLuise (1933-2009), possibly best known for “The Cannonball Run” movies and his voice work in animated movies like “All Dogs Go to Heaven”, “Oliver & Company” & the “American Tail” movies. | The Don: “Big Fat Paulie is in town to attend the wedding of my daughter”
The character of the Don is a allusion to the character “Vito Corleone” from 1972's “The Godfather” played by the Oscar© winning American actor Marlon Brando (1924-2004)
The Don's line as well as the multiple mentions of his daughter's wedding later in the episode are nods to a line spoken in “The Godfather”, “Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your daughter's wedding... on the day of your daughter's wedding.” | The Oscar© Nominated American actor Greg Kinnear (1963-) is mentioned in this episode | Visual: Movie marquee: “How Stella Got Her Groove Back II”
Fictitious sequel to the 1998 romantic drama “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” starring Angela Bassett (1958-), Taye Diggs (1971-), Whoopi Goldberg (1955-) & Regina King (1971-) | Louie Anderson: “I'm Louie Anderson”
Louie Anderson (1953-) was a stand up comedian who hit his popularity in the 80's and early 90's.
He created the cartoon “Life with Louie” (1995-1998) & was one of the hosts of the long running game show “Family Feud” | Peter: “Hey, Guess I've got milk. Don't Shoot Me!”
Allusion to the series of “got milk” TV and print ads | Oscar© winning actress Elizabeth Taylor (1932-) is mentioned in this episode | Stewie: “Oh yes who taught you how to eat, Mickey Rourke?
Why do I know that name? DAMN YOU Entertainment Tonight!”
American actor Mickey Rourke (1952-) is mentioned in this episode along with the long running entertainment show “Entertainment Tonight” (1981-Present).
The cutaway to E.T. includes the one time host Bob Goen (1954-) who was the co-host from 1996-2004 and the host who's been there since the beginning, Mary Hart (1950-).
The joke about her legs being the host is an allusion to the fact her legs are insured for $1,000,000. | Peter: “She just doesn't want to see me fall into a tough crowd again”
The “tough crowd” Peter was involved in was apparently the “Cavity Creeps”.
The Cavity Creeps were featured in a series of animated commercials for Crest toothpaste in the 1970's and 80's. | Peter: “I'm too old to start dating again”
The cutaway that follows Peter's line that of the American game show “The Dating Game” which began in 1965 created by Chuck Barris.
It had several syndicated revivals over the decades, 1973-1974, 1978-1980, 1986-1989, 1996-1999 & 1999-2000. | Lois: “All we have to do is blend in.”
Peter: “Oh no problem.”
Peter attempts to blend in by singing the 1975 song “Rhinestone Cowboy” originated by Glen Campbell (1936-). | One of the stars of the long running NBC hit sitcom “FRIENDS” (1991-2004), David Schwimmer appears in this episode. | Peter: “I learned my lesson and best of all, nobody important got hurt.”
The valet's smoking red vest floating down and Peter's comments may be an allusion to “Star Trek” (1966-1969) and the fact many times unimportant characters dressed in red, better known as “Red Shirts”, were inexplicably killed each episode. |
