Peter has his palm read by a psychic who reveals that he had a fascinating past life as Griffin Peterson, a dignified gentleman who vied for the love of Lady Redbush in 17th century England and in the newly founded American colony of Quahog.

It was a time of great love and adventure where King Stewart reigned supreme, the smartest dog in the room was the court jester, army lieutenants were merely boys and even old England loved “How I Met Your Mother”.

Cultural References

British actor Alan Rickman (1946-) (or rather his impersonated voice) makes an appearance in this episode

Cleveland: “Hey y'all, I'd like you to meet my cousin from Jamaica, Madame Claude”

Cleveland's psychic cousin, Madame Claude may be an allusion to “Miss Cleo”, a self-proclaimed psychic and shaman who achieved fame as a spokeswoman for a psychic pay-per-call service in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Peter: “HeHeHe, you sound like the crab from Little Mermaid”

Peter is referring to the character “Sebastian” from the 1989 Disney movie “The Little Mermaid” & its 2 sequels

Madame Claude: “Oh my! You were Jack the Ripper!”

“Jack the Ripper” is a pseudonym given to an unidentified serial killer active in the largely impoverished Whitechapel area and adjacent districts of London, England, in late 1888.

Peter: “Oh I don't think there's anything in that black bag for me”

Peter's line is a direct quote from the 1939 classic film “The Wizard of Oz”.
The line is said by Dorothy to the Wizard after he hands out Scarecrow's brains, Tin Man's heart & Lion's courage.

Glen: “Now wait a second Cool Runnings, we learned in school...”

“Cool Runnings” is a 1993 Disney film about the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team to make it to the winter Olympics.

Griffin: “No we're off it's Martin Luther Day.”
“Yes that's a very smart joke. Isn't that right comedy professors.”

Martin Luther (1483–1546) initiated the Protestant Reformation.

King Stewart: “I wish to be entertained. Where's my troop of actors?”

King Stewart the Third is entertained by the (male) cast of the CBS show “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-Present).

Griffin: “...and there's 290 years separating me from the films of Kevin Smith”

Woman in church: “I didn't vote for him”

This line is an allusion to the 1975 comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”.
The same line (with “you” replacing “him”) is said by a peasant woman speaking to King Arthur.

Harry McAfee: (shaking the King's hand) “Hello, Harry McAfee, as a citizen I'm proud to have you reign over me and the McAfee Fertilizer Company”

The character “Harry McAfee” is a character played by Paul Lynde (1926-1982) in the 1960 Broadway musical & 1963 film “Bye Bye Birdie”.

Harry McAfee talks to Conrad Birdie to make him feel welcome in his house because his daughter won a contest to kiss Conrad Birdie.

King Stewart: “Oh I'm sorry, is my wedding interrupting your promotion?”

During King Stewart's vows an onscreen promotion for the fellow FOX show “24” featuring its star Kiefer Sutherland appears and causes great annoyance to the King.

Visual: “Madonna's 16th Birthday Party”

Music icon Madonna (1958-) is featured in this episode as celebrating her 16th birthday.

Griffin: “This is me before Ultra Slim Fast”

The diet food supplement Ultra Slim Fast is mentioned in this episode as well as a variation of the commercials where someone would hold up a “before” photo of themselves and then reveal their new weight.

King Stewart: “Wait wait, there's got to be a better way to settle this.”
Griffin: “Talent show?”
King Stewart: “Talent show!”

The performance Griffin and the other colonists put on is a direct take off of the performance the nerds do at the finale of the 1984 comedy “Revenge of the Nerds”
