Carl Winslow, played by Reginald VelJohnson
[bFamily Life] The father of the family and unquestionably the leader of the Winslow clan (in his own mind). He and Harriet had been married for more than 20 years as the series began. Counting three kids to their credit, oldest Eddie, middle child Laura and the baby Judy. His mother was Estelle, who also moved in with them.
Husband: While happily married, the Winslow's love affair was never boring, as witnessed in many episodes when the two would butt heads over everything from the kids to the appliances. But in the end the two always made up and resolved their differences in a funny and loving way.
Professional On the professional front, Carl (much like his late Father and later his own son Eddie) was a proud 20 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. A Sargeant as the series opened, Carl had to deal with the many crazy situations his job seemingly always got him into. Whether it involved his sometimes partner (and superior officer) Lt. Murtagh, a bumbling goof of a man, or the pesky Steve Urkel, we always knew that Carl was an upstanding citizen who always did the right thing. So much so, that by series end he had been promoted to Captain.
Steve Urkel/Carl This turned out to be the relationship that defined the series. It was always Carl (The Big Guy) whom Steve was forever turning to in good times and bad, for advice or just attention. Poor Carl was also usually on the recieving end when Steve's many wacky inventions went haywire and the result almost always being Carl saying, "Steve, go home, go gome, go home!" and by Urkel's patented reply, "I don't have to take this, I'm going home". Either that or Carl would chase him out of the house threatening bodily harm. Though they had their many funny mishaps, Carl eventually came to love Steve as a son and Steve of course Idolized Carl as the Father he'd never really had. |
