Carl Winslow, played by Reginald VelJohnson

[bFamily Life] The father of the family and unquestionably the leader of the Winslow clan (in his own mind). He and Harriet had been married for more than 20 years as the series began. Counting three kids to their credit, oldest Eddie, middle child Laura and the baby Judy. His mother was Estelle, who also moved in with them.

Husband: While happily married, the Winslow's love affair was never boring, as witnessed in many episodes when the two would butt heads over everything from the kids to the appliances. But in the end the two always made up and resolved their differences in a funny and loving way.

Professional On the professional front, Carl (much like his late Father and later his own son Eddie) was a proud 20 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. A Sargeant as the series opened, Carl had to deal with the many crazy situations his job seemingly always got him into. Whether it involved his sometimes partner (and superior officer) Lt. Murtagh, a bumbling goof of a man, or the pesky Steve Urkel, we always knew that Carl was an upstanding citizen who always did the right thing. So much so, that by series end he had been promoted to Captain.

Steve Urkel/Carl This turned out to be the relationship that defined the series. It was always Carl (The Big Guy) whom Steve was forever turning to in good times and bad, for advice or just attention. Poor Carl was also usually on the recieving end when Steve's many wacky inventions went haywire and the result almost always being Carl saying, "Steve, go home, go gome, go home!" and by Urkel's patented reply, "I don't have to take this, I'm going home". Either that or Carl would chase him out of the house threatening bodily harm. Though they had their many funny mishaps, Carl eventually came to love Steve as a son and Steve of course Idolized Carl as the Father he'd never really had.

Edward "Eddie" Winslow, played by Darius McCrary

Edward "Eddie" Winslow, the 15 year old (as the series begins) son of Carl and Harriette, is the oldest chld in the crowded Winslow household. But being the oldest doesn't mean that young Eddie views his role in the family as the trend setter for the young kids (sisters Laura and Judy and cousin Richie), he doesn't. Eddie would rather avoid work (chores or homework) and hit on the ladies.

Fortunately for Eddie he was indeed a player (E-man) who usually got the most beautiful of girls, even being to successful at times as he'd get caught with one girl by another of his upcoming dates. Though many, many girls would come and go over the first few seasons none of them were seen more than a handful of times. That would change though, later in the series.

Eddie's success (and failures) with the ladies mirrored his success on the court, the Basketball court, which he played off and on throughout the series run. First, getting Carl into a frenzy about his son making the high school basketball team. Calmer heads prevailed in the end and both Eddie and his father took a more nuanced approached to his sports career.

Later, as the series entered it's prime (season's four through six) Eddie's life changed a great deal. Butting heads with Carl (episode 04X10), resulting in him and Steve moving into an apartment of their own. Eddie also got his first car when Carl purchased an old police cruiser and the two fixed it up to be like new. More importantly was Eddie's beginning work at a local food chain (Might Weiny), where he worked with both Steve, and later, Waldo. Even rising to the level of manager at one point.

The series later season's brought even more changes to the young Winslow's life as Steve's cousin Myrtle arrived from Mississippi and fell head over heels in love with the studly Eddie. But just as in Laura's case, Eddie was in no way interested in the enamored Urkel. Though it did interfere, greatly at times, with his now blossoming love affair with new girlfriend, Greta. Resulting in an on-going war of words between Myrtle and Greta.

Greta though wasn't the biggest development in Eddie's life as the series wound down, it was his decision to quit college and follow in the footsteps of his Grandfather and Father and join the Chicago Police Department (episode 09x13). A move which featured several great Father/Son moments between the older and younger Winslow. Showing that Carl and Harriette's methods of parenting were VERY successful as they'd raised a lazy slacker of a son to be an upstanding member of the Chicago cummunity.
