The Brown family's renovation is finally picking up some steam, and the crew is able to complete the second-floor extension. But careless work by the roofer sends contractor Kiwi on the warpath. Meanwhile, Adam really starts to get into the groove of this renovation, but when a major deal on windows falls through, he re-runs the numbers and makes a concerning realization. Even though the project is only halfway through, he might be running out of money.

Having just discovered that they are $20,000 over budget, Emilie and Adam tell Kiwi it's the end of the road for him and his crew. Emilie supports Adam's plan to complete the renovation himself but doesn't agree with his list of priorities. The chaos finally gets to Emilie when her daughter's third birthday party proves to be too overwhelming in a house that's been ripped apart.

While Adam is loving his role as contractor for their home renovation, Emilie is loathing the situation. In addition to working a full-time job, Adam is using every spare moment to renovate, but there's been little progress. A failed city inspection gives Emilie the courage to suggest a last-ditch solution -- asking Adam's parents for money. And when Handyman Adam builds a wall in the wrong place, she pushes even harder to find a way for Kiwi to come back and finish things up.

The reality of renovating sinks in for Adam and Emilie during the second week of renovations. With two active little girls, they see danger in every corner of the house. To begin with, the crew needs to rip off the old roof so they can start framing the new dormer, but there's cold, wet weather coming and an unfinished, exposed roof would be a disaster. Plus, an unstable chimney derails the crew and has the potential to take down half the house.

The last day of work for Kiwi's crew creeps up quickly on Adam and Emilie, who had hoped to sneak in a few more projects before the workers were finished. But Adam is too distracted by his flooring plans to really notice. He's worried that he may have over-promised what he can do to prep the floors so that the family can save money on their installation. Everything seems to be under control until a delivery truck with the family's new appliances shows up on the same day the kitchen and old appliances need to be removed.

Emilie is determined to have the rustic barn-beam look she has dreamed of from day one of this renovation. But she's on a roller coaster riding trying to achieve the look. And for the first time since the renovation has begun, Emilie picks up a hand tool and loves it. Meanwhile, Adam is on his own to try and organize the subs to finish their new bathroom and tiles. And it seems the only person who will listen to this tired and worn-out couple is their friend Jonathan, an opinionated interior consultant.

With winter on the way out, Adam and Emilie thought their renovation would be complete by the time Emilie's 35th birthday rolled around. To push themselves to get everything wrapped up, they combine the birthday party with a renovation party. But for the first time since renovating has begun, their subcontractors are holding things up. And it looks like the final reveal is going to be a flop.
