An angry sculptor, Phillip Masters, is working on the beach digging up some clay for his work. He’s furious that other artists are receiving awards while he’s shunned. A piece of glowing debris falls out of the sky and hits his clay. The authorities rope off the area and the Fantastic Four arrive to investigate. They take away the soil, unaware that Masters has already taken some of the clay.
Back at his home, Masters irritably makes a small model of Reed while watching him on TV at a news conference. Masters quickly realizes that when he manipulates the puppet model, Reed is forced to move the same way. Later when Reed is running an analysis on himself, Johnny is babysitting a kid TV star, Ricky, in hopes of getting a co-starring role. Masters takes control of Ben and forces him to march through the streets, kidnapping the artists from the award ceremony.
Alicia arrives and recognizes the names of the kidnapped artists, and directs the team to the third artist after Ben kidnaps the first two. The team arrives there but the controlled Ben holds them off by destroying a building, forcing them to save the people and giving Ben time to escape. Masters then sends Ben to kidnap Alicia, who is his stepdaughter. He wants her to share in his glory but she refuses. The rest of the team follow her there and Masters takes control of Johnny while announcing he is now the “Puppet Master.” Reed and Sue try to hold off their comrades until Reed realizes that the clay is Masters’ method of control. He tells Alicia, who destroys the Thing control puppet. Johnny is forced to attack them but Ben directs his fireball into the Human Torch puppet, destroying that as well.
The team expresses their gratitude to Alicia for saving them all, while Johnny finds out that Ricky has decided to hire Ben as his co-star. In prison, Masters is locked in solitary confinement… and starts using some hidden clay to plan his escape.
