A red energy sphere appears over New York City but appears harmless, as opposed to the previous ones (in “Bait and Switch”). The Fantastic Four shows up to investigate but the sphere disappears, taking them with it. The team finds itself in the Negative Zone. They can breathe, but the real problem is that their powers suddenly start overloading. Johnny and Sue can’t control their powers, Red is too stretched out to function, and Ben mutates even further and can barely move. An insect army of fliers attack them and the team is unable to defend itself. They are all captured and Red is knocked out by their leader.
The team awakens in the leader’s spacecraft. He introduces himself as Annihilus and believes that they are invaders come from Earth to destroy his realm and take his source of power, the cosmic control rod. He doesn’t believe their claims of innocence but they’re interrupted when a dimensional portal opens and a new figure arrives: Dr. Doom!
Doom claims that the Fantastic Four are the tyrants of Earth and he thanks Annihilus for helping him set the trap that allowed their defeat. Doom thanks Annihilus and departs, but Reed realizes he’s up to something more and the team manages to break free. They fight their way through the ship and finally subdue Annihilus, then reveal that Doom has stolen the ruler’s cosmic control rod.
Reed contacts H.E.R.B.I.E. back on Earth and gets him to open a portal for them right before Doom attacks the Baxter Building. They attack Doom but even with their enhanced powers they’re barely able to hold their own against his own rod-enhanced might. Reed warns the Latvian ruler that he can’t control the rod’s power but Doom ignores him. They then reveal that they’ve brought an invisibility-cloaked Annihilus with them. Annihilus fights his betrayer and they are both sucked upward to where the control had formed an energy rift back to the Negative Zone. Doom and Annihilus are pulled through, and Reed manages to reverse the energy flow so that the Fantastic Four are restored to normal. Nothing is left of Doom on Earth but his mask.
As the Fantastic Four start to repair the Baxter Building, Doom wakes up to find himself at the mercy of a very angry Annihilus…
