Episode Notes

'The Train Job was written in two days to be the new pilot after the network, Fox, had decided that the originally intended pilot, 'Serenity' (parts one and two), was too long and needed to be more action orientated. Many argue that the show would have had a better chance and lasted longer on air if not for the bold change in the episode airing order.

The uniforms worn by the marines in the train are the same uniforms used on the movie Starship Troopers.

Creator Joss Whedon pondered the idea of playing Badger himself.

Summer Glau, who plays River, guest starred in Joss Whedon's Angel for the episode "'Waiting in the Wings". Whedon was so impressed with her performance, he casted Glau for this show.

This episode is really meant to be watched as the second episode after the pilot. Something which has been fixed on the DVD set.

Episode Quotes

Inara: What did I say to you about barging into my shuttle?
Malcolm: That it was manly and impulsive?
Inara: Yes, exactly. Only the exact phrase I used was "don't."

Jayne: Do you know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with 'til you understand who's in ruttin' command here.

River: They'll never stop. They'll just keep coming until they get back what you took. Two by two. Hands of blue. Two by two, hands of blue.

Kaylee: We tried to get him into the infirmary. He's just… heavy.

Cultural References

Jayne: Hey, hey. Them ain't "kosherized" rules.

Refers to the Jewish word "kosher", which means "ok" or "alright".
