Two Days before the Blackout
At NLAP in Palo Alta, CA, Simon and Lloyd discuss their upcoming test of the accelerator, a test that will recreate the Big Bang in miniature. Simon gets a call from his mother informing him that his father has died in a hunting accident.
The Day of the Blackout
Lloyd proceeds with the accelerator test in Simon's absence. Dr. Gordon Myhill brings in Angie Tremont, a reporter from
New Science Report who is there to cover the event. They proceed with the test, a wave of energy sweeps across the globe, and everyone at NLAP blacks out. Minutes later, Lloyd and almost everyone else wake up, although Tremont has died in the fall.
The Present, April 22
Lloyd does an interview and explains that the flashforwards are possibilities, not absolutes. However, he suggests that forces of the universe may be pushing people to carry out the futures they saw. Meanwhile, Olivia is at the hospital tending to Gabriel McDow while listening to the broadcast, while Demetri and Mark watch from FBI headquarters, and Simon from his limo. The interviewer notes that Lloyd appears to be suggesting that those who have managed to save their lives could still die, but Lloyd admits he's not sure. Next, Celia Quinones, the woman who would have died if Gough hadn't, is interviewed. She explains that she didn't have a flashforward and lived in constant terror of dying in a car crash as reported on the Mosaic board. They take calls and Lloyd tries to reassure people that there couldn't be another blackout. One man worries that there might have been brain damage, but Lloyd insists there is no indication of any such damage. At the office, Mark admits that they can't tell anyone there will be another blackout for fear of setting off a global panic.
As Lloyd ends the interview, he assures the viewers that everyone will be where they're supposed to be. Demetri wonders what that means, and Mark insists that they can fight.
As Simon drives along, he sees his sister Annabelle on a bridge they're passing. He gets out and discovers that multiple snipers in a nearby van have laser targeting devices on her. Annabelle explains that her abductors got his message and that they've released her long enough to give him a message: Simon has only 12 hours to get the ring and turn it over. She tells him to leave and Simon has no choice but to go.
At FBI headquarters, Simon talks to Michael Zamperion, a FBI tech agent, and asks him to track the van's license plate without running it by his superiors. When Zamperion balks, Simon finds a way to pay him to keep it secret.
Nicole comes to see Bryce as he's getting chemotherapy and brings him a book to pass the time.
Demetri and Mark go to a crime scene where MI6 agent Fiona Banks used Demetri's name to get access. She explains that the dead man, Andrew Weeks, was supposed to die on March 20 due to a drug allergy. Despite his nearby gun collection, Weeks was murdered with rat poison in his coffee, and Fiona figures the killer tries to match Weeks' death to his original flashforward death. There are papers on a blue hand gathering among Weeks' papers. Four blue hand survivors have died who evaded their original flashforward deaths, and Fiona thinks they're connected.
Lloyd gets coffee with Olivia and talks about how he lied during the interview rather than start a panic. She wishes there was more she could do to help him, and Lloyd assures her that she is already helping him, and worries about the possibility of brain damage.
Mark informs Simon that Zamperion told him about the license plate, and Simon lies that the van is connected to his sister's disappearance. Having checked the traffic cam on the bridge, Mark knows better and demands the truth. Simon continues to lie and Mark warns that if he's compromised, he could endanger the entire Mosaic investigation.
While Lloyd tries to analyze the ring in the FBI lab, Simon goes over the traffic cam footage of Annabelle. He figures that Lloyd is feeling guilty and has a messianic complex, and finally explains that Annabelle has been kidnapped. Lloyd is offended that Simon didn't come to him for help, but his colleague notes that there's nothing he could have done. Lloyd locks up the QED ring as Simon carefully watches.
Mark takes what he knows to Stan, but admits that the polygraph is inconclusive. Stan promises to find Annabelle and discover what her abductors want from Simon.
Demetri and Fiona go to see Jeff Slingerland, one of the blue hand Dr. Reynauds and the one the FBI arrested months ago. Slingerland, a school teacher, admits he recognizes Andy from a blue hand gathering, but that he no longer attends. He figures that when Andy messed with the balance of the universe, the universe pushed back. Slingerland agrees to give them a list of blue handlers and Fiona warns him that he may be a target.
Bryce reports to Olivia about Gabriel's condition. Once he leaves, Dylan comes by to ask her where Charlie is. Lloyd follows after him and explains that they're there for Dylan's occupational therapy. He admits he was hoping to see Olivia again. Gabriel wanders out of his room, recognizes Lloyd, and insists that he and Olivia are supposed to be together. Olivia gets Gabriel back into his room, and then Vreede talks to her, explaining that he needs to question Gabriel at headquarters. She insists that Gabriel stay for treatment and Vreede asks Gabriel a few questions about a book in his possession with a drawing of Mark's Mosaic board. Between rants, Gabriel explains that he saw it in a flashforward.
Zamperion tracks the van to an eight-block district with sketchy camera coverage and informs Mark and Stan of his results. Mark goes to conduct a sweep of the area and Simon insists on coming. The agent turns him down, warning that he doesn't trust Simon and once he recovers Annabelle, they're going to have a more detailed conversation. Once Mark is gone, Simon enters the lab, remembers what Annabelle told him, and contemplates the QED ring, locked in a case.
Bryce meets with his oncologist, Dr. Lahar Bahti, who informs him that the experimental treatment protocols appear to be working and Bryce's cancer is officially in remission.
At the hospital, Nurse Debbie asks Nicole to administer flu shoots to detainees at Immigration. Among the files is one on Keiko, who Nicole recognizes from Bryce's sketch.
Demetri and Fiona talk to Chad, the clerk at the coffee store that Andy frequented. He confirms that Andy met with a man several times, and the man matches Slingerland's description. They go back to the school and discover that Slingerland saw them and fled. One of the students has a message from Slingerland to Demetri: "The universe always pushes back." Demetri realizes that Slingerland is trying to restore the balance, and will go after Celia next.
That night, Slingerland prepares to run over Celia in the street, fulfilling her destiny. As he drives toward her, Demetri rams him and tells Celia to run. She does, as Slingerland chases after her. Demetri captures Slingerland, knocking him to the ground, but Fiona arrives in her car and hits Celia by accident. She survives the impact and they call the EMTs, and Demetri tells Slingerland that he failed. Slingerland, dying from the impact, says he was supposed to die of an aneurysm, and insists that it's the universe that is balancing things... and Demetri is next.
As Lloyd leaves for the day, Simon approaches him in the parking garage and apologizes for everything he's done to him, and that he's been stressed because of Annabelle's abduction. Lloyd invites him for a drink but Simon says he has to be somewhere.]
At the hospital, Bryce kisses Nicole and then tells her that his cancer has gone into remission. He explains that he's been thinking about his future and doesn't want to waste any more time.
Back at the office, Demetri tries to tell Fiona there's nothing she could have done. She remembers Gough suggests she put tape on her window to keep the bird from crashing into it in her flashforward. They get a call from the hospital, and the doctor informs Fiona that Celia has suffered extensive damage and most likely won't pull through. He uses the same words that Gough told her he heard in his flashforward, and Fiona realizes there are no accidents anymore.
Mark continues to check the area for Annabelle and finds a maintenance man. The man explains that a van hit an electrical box before driving into a warehouse, and Mark calls in a SWAT team. They break into the warehouse and finds the van with a bound and gagged Annabelle inside. Mark calls Simon and gives him the good news. Simon asks to talk to her. He tells her goodbye, then hangs up the phone and leaves his room.
Mark and Stan go to the lab and discover that Simon has taken the ring.
At home, Olivia shows Lloyd scans of Gabriel's brain, confirming there's been no damage caused by his multiple flashforwards. They discuss Gabriel's vision of them together and say they know how they felt, and then kiss. They're interrupted by a knock at the door. It's Mark, who wants to talk to Lloyd about what Simon did. He sees Olivia, who hastily leaves, and Lloyd claims she was just showing him the scans. Mark then tells Lloyd that Simon has disappeared and asks if Simon acted unusual on the day of the Blackout. Lloyd informs him that Simon was in Toronto for his father's funeral that day, but insisted they run the test at exactly 11:00 a.m. When Mark wonders if Simon could have engineered a global Blackout, Lloyd admits that it's possible and warns that Simon always has a plan.
Zamperion goes back and analyzes the tape of Suspect Zero, and uses software to confirm that it's Simon. Mark confirms that a plane landed with an emergency and didn't file a flight plan, at the time that Simon would have had to get from Toronto to Detroit and back. They realize Simon is the man they've been looking for.
Mark talks to Annabelle, who claims she never saw the faces of her abductors. The only thing she heard is that they said Simon is going to cause another Blackout.
