Recap

Bud dislikes his father's friend Kathryn -- he fears his father may marry her and their lives will change drastically. Porter and Kathryn go fishing. They come upon Bud and invite him aboard but Bud declines and goes his way. A gale rises. Bud takes refuge in a cave at the edge of the shore and sends Flipper for help. Porter and Kathryn follow Flipper to the entrance of Bud's cave. Bud appears at a distance in deep water struggling to swim. Kathryn dives into the water and rescues him. Bud changes his feelings about Kathryn -- he's glad she's a friend...

Analysis

Although this episode is told from a child's point of view, the theme is not the stuff of children's action and adventure shows. It's difficult to believe the show's juvenile viewers would have any interest in a widower's love life. Mercifully, Porter's love life was never mentioned again in the first season.
