Newly-appointed head coach Eric Taylor has the chance of a lifetime as he leads the promising Dillon High School football team into their highly-anticipated season. In Dillon, Texas, winning the state football championship is the one thing on everyone's mind, and with this season's team, Coach Taylor might be able to make that happen.

In the aftermath of Street's career-ending injury, the town of Dillon copes with the reality of the injury through prayer. Pressures and stresses begin to mount for Coach Taylor when he has to put the fate of the season on second-string quarterback, Matt Saracen. As Coach Taylor tries to pull the team together during this difficult time, as well as work with a nervous Matt, Lyla stands by Jason by being the support he needs to recover. Lastly, as game day approaches, the team comes together and vows to win one for Street.

Following a difficult loss to the Milbank Rattlers, the town begins to turn against Coach Taylor, which causes team morale to plummet. Meanwhile, Jason begins to rehab, but his high emotion and frustration puts Lyla into the arms of another. Elsewhere, seedy deals are made to recruit a new quarterback, Ray "Voodoo" Tatum, as Coach Taylor begins to realize that he may need to take drastic measures to save his job and the season.

Dillion prepares to go up against their biggest rival with Coach Taylor struggling to find a way to bring the team together while his family begins to unravel. Smash and Riggins get together to retaliate against the Tigers for their destruction of their field house. Street gives up hope until his roommate at the rehab center gets him to realize his potential. While new quarterback Voodoo continues to be unstoppable on the field, second string quarterback, Matt Saracen, hits rock bottom. As the big game approaches, Coach Taylor has an opportunity to save his reputation and job if the Panthers can pull out a win.
