Over There, Part 1 - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
On the other Earth, Fringe Division mobilizes when they detect a dimensional breach. Colonel Broyles summons Charlie, Olivia, and Lincoln Lee to investigate. They go to the breach site, a music hall, and secure the area. While Olivia interrogates the local witnesses, Lincoln tests for gravity aberrations. When eh confirms that the gravity in the area is destabilizing, he reports to Broyles, who orders a quarantine. Astrid, Broyles' assistant, monitors the fluctuations and warns that although necessary, a quarantine could cause thousands of deaths. Lincoln prepares the quarantine device but at the last minute, Astrid informs them that it isn't necessary.

Charlie finds a dead man in the music hall, his body covered in tumorous carcinomas. They examine him and discover a $20 bill with a picture of a President they've never heard of, rather than Martin Luther King Jr. As they examine the body, they're unaware that Walter, Olivia, Nick Lane, and Sally Clark are hiding in the balcony.

Thirty-six hours earlier, Walter receives a surveillance tape confirming that Peter voluntarily went Walter's alternate self to the other Earth. Walter starts digging through boxes in his lab. Meanwhile, Olivia is drinking at a bar when the Observer walks up to her, leaves a piece of paper on the barstool next to her, and departs before she can do anything. Walter calls to inform her that he's remembered that there's something the Observer told him he needed to remember. Olivia examines the piece of paper, which shows Peter with glowing energy emerging from his eyes, as well as a machine with a human figure strapped into it.

Olivia and Walter meet at the Bishop house and he remembers that the Observer told him that if Peter traveled to the other world, then this Earth would be destroyed. They contact Broyles, who figures that the machine was created by William Bell. They go to see Nina at Massive Dynamic and demand answers. She says that Massive Dynamic isn’t involved and takes them to the lab. Brandon analyzes the readings and explains that the two universes overlap. When someone passes through, they lose molecular cohesion. He demonstrates on a cup, causing it to explode upon impact. Brandon figures that Bell has passed back and forth enough between universes that he can no longer transition safely. Nina warns that Bell hasn't responded to any of the messages that she's sent him, and she has no idea if he's alive or dead. When they suggest that Walter use his doorway technology, he warns that it caused a dimensional rift that could destroy both worlds. Nina notes that Olivia use her cortexiphan-enhanced abilities, but Olivia points out that so far she has only gotten uncontrolled glimpses and survived the transition that Bell initiated. Walter suggests that several cortexiphan-enhanced children, working in concert, could make the transition. Broyles explains that they have three other children.

Broyles takes Olivia to the Massive Dynamic campus where the three children, now adults, are working on their abilities. They are Nick Lane, an empathic projector; Sally Clark, a pyrokinetic; and James Heath, a healer. They have all been working to perfect their abilities. Olivia and Broyles take the three individuals to a lab at the Federal Building that Peter requisitioned when he demanded additional funds from the government for Fringe Division. They see Walter and remember what he and Bell did to them. Walter apologizes, saying that they needed children who could serve as protectors and safeguard both worlds. Nick wonders if he's sincere, but James isn't convinced. Broyles tells them to get some rest, and they ask for one last night off.

Broyles agrees and James goes to a hospital to heal the sick and dying. Nick and Sally end up in bed together, using his ability to share their feelings. Walter goes home and finds his old sweater, and prays to God for Peter's safe return. In the morning, Olivia gives her niece Ella the necklace that Olivia's mother gave to her for protection. As Olivia goes, she runs into Rachel, who wonders when she'll be back. Olivia assures her sister that she'll be back in a day or two and gives her a hug. However, once she's gone, Rachel sees the necklace and realizes that something else is going on.

At the lab, Olivia passes on a message to Broyles that Nina has sent a message to Bell to meet the travelers at Grayshot Bridge in the other world's Central Park. Broyles wonders if Bell is working with the other world's soldiers to build the weapon, but Olivia insists that Bell can be trusted and, regardless, they're out of options.

At the music hall in their world, Walter gathers Olivia and the other three individuals. He insists on going over Broyles' objections, saying he can't let the others endanger themselves while he remains safely behind. Nick, watching, thanks Walter for the cortexiphan experiment, suggesting that perhaps he accomplished something good after all.

Walter has Olivia and the others relax and imagine that they can go anywhere. After a few seconds, they transition over to the music hall in the other universe. James falls to the ground, the carcinomas from his cancer spreading rapidly as his powers fail to work in containing his illness. Sally also starts to feel ill, and Walter tells hem to hide. They take refuge in the balcony as the other world's Fringe division arrives. Walter tells Nick to use his abilities to make them leave, but Nick's powers are also malfunctioning. They watch as the Fringe team confirms that James, now dead, is from another world.

The other world's Fringe team is summoned to meet with the Secretary on the DOD's Staten Island base. The Secretary, the other Walter, has the other Olivia describe the purpose of their Fringe Division: to track down interdimensional breaches that are causing environmental disasters in their world. She notes that the Secretary wrote about the breaches in his world's manifesto, ZFT. The Secretary informs her that there is more that he didn't write about. The breaches lead to a inhabited universe, and that those inhabitants are deliberately creating breaches as a form of attack. The Secretary informs them that James is an intruder and that he came with others, and tells the Fringe team to locate the intruders.

Olivia, Walter, Nick, and Sally try to make their way to Central Park. They catch a bus but discover that the authorities have security monitoring devices on all forms of public transportation. They have no choice but to walk despite the fact that Sally is increasingly ill.

Peter wakes up in a bedroom at the Secretary's home. He goes to the kitchen and finds his real mother Elizabeth making breakfast. She embraces him, crying.

As they try to get to Central Park, Sally gets worse and Walter suggests that when they find Bell, he might have a cure for her condition.

As Peter talks with his mother over coffee, he mentions the Elizabeth that raised him. His mother wants to hear all about his life, and Peter admits that the other Elizabeth killed her over the guilt she felt when Walter abducted him to the other universe. Elizabeth tells him that his real father is in the city but left blueprints for Peter to study.

Olivia and the others get to Grayshot Bridge. However, Fringe Division and the police arrive. Walter and Olivia run into the forest and the other Olivia pursues them. Lincoln shoots Nick as he tries to protect Sally. As he lies dying, Sally looks up at Lincoln, activates her power, and incinerates herself and her lover's killer. Olivia and Walter are separated and the other Olivia shoots at Walter but seemingly misses. The other Olivia returns to Grayshot Bridge where the medics are trying to stabilize Lincoln.

Walter walks down the street and realizes that he was shot. Rambling, he staggers to a hospital and collapses at the emergency room door.

Peter goes over the blueprints and his mother asks him if he knows what they mean. Peter admits that he isn't sure.

Olivia finds her way to an information kiosk and looks up an address.

The alternate Olivia returns home and her boyfriend Frank Stanton greets her. She lies and tells him that Lincoln was injured in an industrial accident, part of her team's cover story. The other Olivia assures him that Lincoln will be okay after a few weeks of nanite treatment. She and Frank end up in bed. On the street below, Olivia watches from the shadows. Bell comes up behind her and explains that he figured he would come there. He apologizes for missing them at the bridge, and insists that she'll have to trust him. Bell warns that they don't have much time to rescue Walter.

The Secretary goes to a secret underground facility where the weapon from the plans is being assembled. He takes out a power unit and leaves.
