Over There, Part 2 - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
On the alternate Earth, Peter flies into New York City by helicopter and looks at the devastation caused by the interdimensional holes that have opened up since Walter abducted him as a child. Arriving at DOD Headquarters on Staten Island, prepares to meet with his real father, the Walter of this Earth who is the Secretary of Defense. Meanwhile, the Secretary receives a report that his duplicate has been spotted at a NYC hospital.

The “bad” Olivia, Bolivia, is at home with her fiancé when Broyles calls to tell her about the spotting at the hospital. He orders her and Charlie to investigate and then calls the Secretary to assure him that they’ll capture the invaders.

Peter meets with his real father, the alternate Walter, and both of them are awkward at the reunion.

Olivia and Bell search the hospitals while Bell explains that he has contacts within the DOD, and that the head of the department is Walter, or Walternate as Olivia’s Walter nicknamed his counterpart. Bell, who works for the DOD, uses his credentials to distract the nurse while Olivia looks for Walter. Bolivia and Charlie arrive and Bell distracts them, discussing their weaponry that he helped design, while Olivia gets Walter out. He explains that the hospital healed him using advanced technology. They get outside and Bell picks them up. Meanwhile, Bolivia examines the security footage and watches herself get Walter out of the hospital.

At DOD headquarters, Walternate explains to Peter that his world has been stricken with numerous environmental disasters after Walter created the doorway between realities. He wants Peter to use his knowledge of Earth's technology to help him complete a machine to end the disasters, and ask Peter to look at the power source they have for the machine. Peter agrees and Walternate thanks him for making the decision to come home. Bolivia arrives and Walternate introduces her to Peter. He can't help staring at her, and explains that she reminds him of someone he knows. Walternate talks to Bolivia privately and hears her report, and he realizes she knows that the invaders are their counterparts. He warns that their counterparts are monsters and they can't be trusted. Bolivia realizes that Peter is Walternate's abducted son who has been missing for 20 years, and Walternate asks her for a favor.

The fugitives take refuge at a restaurant and Bell warns that the Fringe team of this world will soon be tracking them. They split up, and Olivia goes to find Peter while Bell and Walter find a way for them to return. Walter warns that they can't go back now that the three Cortexiphan subjects are dead, but Bell suggests that they create a doorstop device to open the crack that Olivia can still create with her abilities. Walter snaps at his old partner and the two start arguing, and Olivia gets them back on track. They agree to meet back at the opera house that night. As Olivia leaves, Bell notes to Walter that she may have been their greatest success, and Walter agrees.

Bolivia secures Peter at a safe house and asks about his life. She notes that he'll be famous since his abduction has become a legendary tale. She wonders what her counterpart is like and Peter comments that Olivia is always trying to make up for something in her past. When Bolivia looks blank, Peter concedes that perhaps she and Olivia are totally different.

Bell drives Walter to Harvard and points out that he's responsible for the devastation that has wiped out much of the surrounding countryside. The university is partially embedded in amber as part of Fringe quarantine procedures, but Walternate's old lab is outside of the area. As they start searching for the doorstop device, Bell explains that his counterpart died in a car accident as a young man, and Walter accuses him of using his expertise to steal the other Earth's technology and make a profit for himself. Bell admits that he did so, but he used the money to finance Massive Dynamic's efforts on their earth, and he only did it after Walter abducted this world's peter and set off the whole chain of events. He insists that he has only been working with this Earth's DOD and provided them with the shapeshifter technology to get into Walternate's inner circle and find out what he's up to. Walter accuses him of cutting out pieces of his brain for his own purposes, and Bell ducks the accusation. They find the doorstop device and go to work.

Bolivia returns to her apartment and discovers that Frank has left on h is assignment. He left her supper, but as she starts to prepare it, Olivia confronts her with a gun.

As Bell and Walter work on hooking up the doorstop device, Walter warns that Olivia won't be able to create a doorway on her own. Bell says that he'll take care of it.

Olivia asks for Bolivia's help to find Peter. She notices a photo of her mother with Bolivia, and Bolivia confirms their mother is alive on this Earth. However, their mother hasn't been well since her other daughter Rachel died in childbirth. Olivia explains that on her Earth, Rachel survived and had a daughter, Ella. Olivia returns to the matter of Peter, and her insistence cues Bolivia that she's in love with him.

Walter tries to get Bell to explain why he cut out some of his memories, but Bell insists they need to focus on the present. They complete their work and leave.

Bolivia agrees to help and picks up her purse and jacket. Olivia takes the purse and searches it for the concealed gun she hides the same way, but Bolivia explains she keeps her backup gun in her jacket. She gets the drop on Olivia, who manages to distract her long enough to disarm her. The two struggle and Olivia finally manages to knock out Bolivia. She then dyes her head red and puts on her alternate's clothing, and then uses her PDA to find out where they're keeping peter. She leaves just as Charlie arrives. He assumes she's Bolivia and tells her that they've detected a power surge at Walternate's Harvard lab. Olivia tells him that Walternate has given them new orders to move Peter before the invaders find him.

Peter examines the power cell and concludes that it's missing something. The device is symbiotic, and Peter figures that it needs an organic interface. As he waves his hand over it, pieces of it are attracted to his skin.

As they drive to the safe house, Charlie wonders about the consequences of revealing Peter's recovery to their Earth, and admits that with all of the technological advances, he feels obsolete.

At her apartment, Bolivia wakes up and realizes that she's been tied up.

Peter concludes that the power cell is designed to interact with only one person: himself. He puts his hand on it and it briefly closes around him. However, Charlie and Olivia arrive and he goes to answer the door. Olivia shows him the picture of the machine that the Observer gave her, and tries to hint that she's the "real" Olivia. She then hits Charlie over the head and tells Peter that they need to go. He explains that Walternate plans to use the machine and Peter's knowledge to destroy their Earth, and asks how long she's known where he came from. Olivia admits that she knew for several weeks without telling him, and he insists he doesn't belong on either Earth. Olivia tells him that he belongs on her Earth, because she needs him there, and kisses him.

Bolivia gets free and meets Walternate at Fringe Headquarters. They pick up the signal from the stolen PDA and realize that Olivia is heading for the opera house.

Peter and Olivia arrive at the opera house as Bell and Walter unload the doorstop device. Bell introduces himself to Peter, and then tells Walter and Peter to take the device inside and activate it. The Fringe assault squad arrives and Bell and Olivia open fire on them to hold them off.

As they work, Walter tries to apologize. Peter ignores the apology and insists they need to get the device working. Outside, Walternate contacts Colonel Broyles with new orders. He sends Bolivia around behind the two fugitives. Bell turns in time to spot her as Olivia calls out a warning. There's an explosion and Bell is temporarily stunned. When he wakes up, Olivia explains that she had to set off a prototype grenade, which has knocked out their attackers.

They go inside and Walter finishes activating the device. However, he warns that they won't have enough power to make the transition. Bell explains that his body is unstable from too many dimensional jaunts, and he'll provide the power by triggering a chain reaction in his own body. As they open the doorway, Bell finally tells Walter that Walter was the one who asked Bell to remove pieces of his brain, in fear of what he was becoming. As the Fringe soldiers break in, Bell shoves his hand into the doorway and he explodes, providing them with the power to send the trio back to the opera house on their Earth.

Olivia goes back to her apartment and looks around.

Peter and Walter go to the lab and Astrid fusses over Peter. He asks her to get Walter home while he gets some fresh air. After she's gone, Walter asks if he's going to come back. Peter admits that he's tried to understand why Walter did what he did, but he can't. However, he admits that Walter did cross over twice to save his life, and he owes him something. He goes and Walter calls him, "Son."

At the store where the shapeshifters have their base of operations, the store owner gets an unexpected visitor: Olivia. She uses the proper password and he gives her access to the typewriter used to communicate between universes. Bolivia tells her superiors that her infiltration is successful and asks for new orders.

On the other Earth, Walternate checks a cell deep within the DOD. Olivia is confined inside. She begs him to release her, but he simply turns off the lights and walks away.
