The Abducted - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
On the Other Side, an old man goes to his bathroom, shaves his head, and bathes himself in water mixed with a vial of some liquid substance. As he works, he chants a prayer.

In New Yonkers, young Max Clayton is worried about the monster in his bed. He runs to his mother, Emily, who checks his closet and beneath his bed. Emily tells Max that if the monster appears, to close his eyes and wish it away. Once she leaves, the old man, wearing a silver mask, emerges from beneath the door and grabs Max, despite the boy's efforts to wish him away. After chloroforming the boy unconscious, the man picks him up and easily leaves via the second-story window.

Olivia goes to see her friend, Henry Higgins, who is running his cab in Manhatan. She invites him to breakfast and then asks him to help her steal a boat so she can get to the DOD laboratory on Liberty Island and go home. Henry is skeptical, but Olivia insists that he's the only person she can trust, and that her time is running out. Her friend finally agrees and says that he'll get his brother's boat so that she doesn't have to take the risk of stealing one. Before they can make further plans, Olivia gets a page telling her to go to New Yonkers.

At the Clayton home, Charlie and Lincoln take over the case and analyze the area for dimensional breaches. They confirm that there is no risk, but the Peter Bishop Act of 1991 requires that they treat all abductions as fringe activity. After Olivia arrives, she and Lincoln talk to the detective, who tells them what happened. Olivia concludes that the killer must have been fairly strong given he carried a boy out a second-story window and climbed down. Lincoln finds one of the abductor's fingerprints and determines that the body oil contains high levels of sucrose. He informs Olivia that a serial abductor has returned: the Candy Man.

At Fringe HQ, Colonel Broyles is going over the case when Secretary Bishop arrives. He notes that they both understand the pain of losing a child, and wonders if Broyles might be too involved to do his job. Broyles assures him that he can handle the case, even though the Candy Man abducted his son Christopher four years ago. When Christopher was found, he was irreparably changed. Broyles then asks when he'll have "his" Olivia back, and Bishop says that they've determined what gives Olivia her ability to move between dimensions. They'll soon be able to dispose of This Side's Olivia and get theirs back. Bishop offers to listen to whatever Broyles wants to discuss about losing a child and then leaves.

Olivia's team returns to base and they go over the former Candy Man abductions. All of the serial abductor's victims were found, but suffered from cell degradation that caused them to age rapidly. Olivia notices incisions on the necks of the victims, and Astrid goes over the data. They realize that one of the victims reported that two men abducted him, and she insists that they should talk to the witness. However, Charlie and Lincoln warn against it, noting that it's Broyles' son, Christopher. Olivia talks to her superior about interviewing his son again, but Broyles insists that it would harm the boy and accomplish nothing. She insists, warning that Broyles might be too close to the case, and he warns that Christopher is getting steadily worse and will die in a few years from his condition. Olivia responds by saying that if they don't get information from Christopher, Max could die, but Broyles tells her to go.

The Candy Man visits the room where he is holding Max, and offers the boy a piece of candy. The man prays again, and Max winces. Attached to the back of his neck is a siphoning device.

At his home in Glen Cove, Christopher listens to the radio since he is blind from the cell degradation. When Broyles comes home, his wife Dianne tells him that there's a police officer outside, and wonders what's going on. He admits that their son's abductor has returned, but the officer is just there as a precaution. When Broyles' mentions Olivia's idea, Dianne assures him that Christopher is strong enough to relive the incident, and Olivia could be right.

At Fringe HQ, Olivia works on the case and Lincoln brings her some food. She concludes that since all of the victims displayed symptoms similar to those of old age, the pituitary gland could be involved. Olivia speculates that the two abductors that Christopher reported, young and old, are actually one person, using pituitary hormones to regain his lost youth. They realize that high hormone levels would elevate blood sugar in the body, accounting for the Candy Man's sucrose levels.

Broyles gives in and calls Olivia to his home. Christopher is a fan of her cases and is eager to talk to her. They talk on the beach, while Broyles watches over his son from the car. Bishop calls to tell him that their Olivia will be back, and they'll soon be eliminating Olivia.

On the beach, Christopher talks about how the room he was held in smelled, and that his abductor fastened a device on his neck. The boy hesitates to say more, and finally admits that the Candy Man threatened to come back and kill his parents if he said anyone. Olivia promises that she'll protect him, and that Max's life is depending on him. Reassured, Christopher tells her the prayer that his abductor recited.

Olivia relays the prayer to Charlie and Lincoln. While they work to determine where it's used in New York, Broyles takes Christopher and Olivia back to the house. Olivia gets a call from Henry saying that he has his brother's boat, while Charlie calls to tell Broyles that they have traced the prayer to the Astoria Church in Queens. Olivia and Broyles go to the church and talk to Reverend Marcus, who explains that he was once a doctor until he lost his wife to avian flu. Since then, he embraced God and has tried to heal people. He balks at giving up the names of his male parishioners, but Broyles appeals to him as a fellow man of faith, and informs him that his son Christopher can identify the abductor's voice. Marcus relents and gives them a list of the members of his men's church group.

The team splits up to investigate the men on the list. Olivia visits one of them, a young man named Wyatt Toomy. He invites her into his apartment and talks about how Marcus is a great man and a healer. Olivia notices a child's doll sitting on a chair and realizes that Toomy is the man she's looking for. He runs into a hidden room and Olivia goes after him, and she finds Max in the hidden room. She tells Max that she's with the FBI and starts to free him. Toomy charges in with a shotgun and Olivia shoots him dead before he can open fire.

The Fringe agents arrive and confirm that Toomy had equipment allowing him to distill pituitary hormones. They wonder how Toomy, a sanitation worker by trade, could create the sophisticated equipment. As Broyles leaves, he thanks Olivia for what she's done and promises that he won't forget. Olivia's partners invite her out for a drink, but she says that she will be going home.

Olivia goes to the marina and meets Henry, who has his brother's boat ready to go. She says that he can back out if he wants, but Henry insists on seeing it through. When he comments that his brother taught him how to sail the boat, Olivia realizes that someone must have taught Toomy how to distill the pituitary fluid. She calls Broyles and tells him that Marcus, the former doctor, perfected the process. Christopher was right, and there were two separate abductors. Broyles tires to call his wife and doesn't get an answer, and he remembers that he told Marcus that Christopher could identify his abductor's voice.

In Glen Cove, Christopher wakes up when his mother screams. Marcus, wearing a silver mask, stalks through the house and tries to find Christopher. As he searches, he tells Christopher that God has given him a message, and that Christopher is one of the sacrifices that must be made. He finds the boy, but Broyles arrives just in time and kills the reverend. The colonel hugs his son while Olivia arrives.

Olivia and the Broyles take Christopher to the hospital to make sure he's okay. Henry calls Olivia, who tells him that she'll be there in a few minutes. She goes to see Max, who asks her who the "FBI" is that she mentioned when she rescued him. Olivia says that it's another word for police, and Max says he wants to grow up to be an FBI agent. As Olivia leaves, she realizes that Broyles overheard the conversation. He reminds her that the FBI was disbanded ten years ago, and then says that when the scientists get through analyzing Marcus' process, they may be able to restore Christopher and the others. Olivia wonders what he's going to do now, and Broyles says that he's going to go home to be home with his family.

Henry and Olivia go out in the boat and get past the security patrols. She thanks him for believing in her, and then tells him that she's from a parallel dimension. She dives into the water and swims to the lab.

Secretary Bishop receives word that there's a break-in at the lab.

Olivia gives herself the psychotropic drugs and enters the sensory deprivation tank. She transitions to the souvenir store on This Side, and tries to get outside. The door is locked, and before she can open it, a cleaning woman comes in. Olivia asks her for help, but then starts to transition back. She quickly tries to tell the cleaning woman to warn Peter, but then disappears. On the Other Side, the MPs remove Olivia from the tank as Bishop looks on.

On This Side, Peter and Bolivia are in bed together, watching Casablanca. Bolivia slips and mentions that Ronald Reagan starred in it, but quickly recovers. As they go to bed, Peter's phone rings. It's the cleaning woman, who tells him that she saw a woman named Olivia disappear before her eyes, and that she said that she was trapped in another universe.
