6B - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Chris and Sylvia are going to a party at the Rosencrantz Building in Park Slope, Brooklyn. As they go in, they past a resident, Mrs. Marcello, who avoids the elevator and leaves with her luggage. Outside, she tells the doorman, Jimmy Smith, that things have been getting steadily worse and she can’t sleep there anymore. He offers to hail her a cab.

Upstairs, the party’s hostess, Kim, greets Chris and Sylvia. Chris goes to get his girlfriend a drink, and Kim and Sylvia talk about the latter’s taste in men. A blender comes on by itself and Kim complains that other appliances have been coming on by themselves. Sylvia tries a chicken appetizer and has an allergic reaction to the peanut sauce. Kim’s boyfriend gets Chris from the balcony and he runs inside to get Sylvia’s purse with her medication.

Walter is making breakfast and Peter wonders why. His father explains that it’s nothing special, but then notes that they haven’t seen Olivia in several weeks and he’s invited her over. Peter says that things between him and Olivia are none of Walter’s concern, but Walter insists that his son’s happiness is his concern. When Olivia arrives, Walter ushers her in and she realizes she’s been set up. Peter explains that Walter wants the two of them to spend time together, as Walter slips out. As Olivia prepares to go, Peter suggests they talk about what’s bothering her. She admits that she figures that Peter isn’t being honest with her, and he still has feelings for Fauxlivia. Peter admits that being with her gave him a glimpse of a life with Olivia, and asks whose taking that away from them now that Fauxlivia is gone. Before Olivia can respond, they get a call summoning them to the Rosencrantz Building.

On the street in front of the Rosencrantz, Broyles tells the team that six people fell to their deaths from the sixth floor. The patio furniture fell with them, but there are no signs of structural damage. Olivia talks to Jimmy while Walter and Peter go upstairs, and he confirms that all six people hit the ground at the same time. He notes that the residents think the building is haunted. Upstairs, an older woman watches them from Apartment 6B

Broyles talks to Rick and Kim, who describe how Sylvia had an allergic reaction. While they were inside, they didn’t notice anything until everyone had fell. Meanwhile, Peter examines the balcony and realizes that the people fell directly below the balcony, meaning that they didn’t jump. Olivia arrives and tells them about the ghost rumors, and Walter starts flipping a coin. He confirms that it has come up heads ten times in a row, defying the laws of physics, and tells the others that This Side is starting to come apart at the seams, starting with the Rosencrantz.

Back at the lab, an angry Walter starts looking for equipment to measure the stress. He explains that they’re dealing with a hole that could create a vortex, and he needs Peter and Olivia to take equipment back to the Rosencrantz and get as much information as possible. When Peter objects, Walter notes that the alternative is frightening Olivia so she can see the glimmer of a dimensional breach. They head off and Walter asks Astrid to get him the file on the commuter bus chemical attack.

At the Rosencrantz, Peter and Olivia set up the equipment and Walter tells them to stay there for last-second calibrations. Peter suggests they go to a nearby bar and Olivia agrees. As they go, Alice Merchant, the resident of 6B, comes in. She quickly goes up to her apartment, draws the curtains, and takes out a photo album.

At the bar, Olivia brings up what Peter said earlier about them being beautiful together, and she says she wants to know what it feels like. She leans forward to kiss him, but then draws back and goes outside to get some air. Peter goes after her and she explains that he glimmered when they kissed. He figures that she’s afraid and asks what, and Olivia says that she’s afraid that she’s the one who is stopping them because she’s terrified of who she really is. As Olivia glances up, she sees a glimmer coming from 6B.

Alice is looking at photos of herself and her husband, Derek. A golden glimmer fills her apartment and she looks at it, unsurprised.

Walter gets readings from the Rosencrantz and calls Peter. Peter is busy going to 6B with Olivia. When they knock and get no response, Peter kicks the door in and they go inside. Olivia sees Alice looking at the ghostly figure of a man who fades away as they arrive. Alice tells Olivia that the man was the ghost of her husband.

Walter arrives and scans the apartment, and notes that there’s no radiation leakage. He doesn’t believe in ghosts. Meanwhile, Alice tells Olivia that her husband has been visiting her for a couple of months. She shows her the album of photos that Derek took as an amateur when they traveled, and they had the time because they didn’t have children. Alice tells Olivia that Derek when they flipped a coin to change a fuse. Derek lost the toss and was electrocuted by a short in the wiring. After the funeral, Alice couldn’t get out of bed because of her grief, and then saw Derek a few days after he died. Walter confirms that they lived there for over 40 years, and Derek originally owned the apartment. Outside, Walter explains that Derek’s double on the Other Side also owned the apartment. Alice is mistaking the other Derek for her husband, and the barrier between universes is so thin that she can see through.

Back at the lab, Walter uses a pane of glass to demonstrate what happens when the barrier between universes weakens. Eventually the barrier breaks and creates a vortex, like the ones on the Other Side. Astrid finds the files on the commuter bus attack and Walter explains that they’ll have to use the amber substance from the attack to block the breaches, the same way that Secretary Bishop on the Other Side did.

At Massive Dynamic, Nina shows them their experiments on the amber, and Broyles realizes that Walter wants to encase the whole block in amber. They warn that use of the amber could cause mass hysteria, but Walter warns that the public outcry will be greater when they learn that vortexes are opening. Olivia tells them the protocol the Other Side Fringe Department uses, and Broyles goes to notify the President. Peter figures that they need to understand what are causing the holes, and they pull up the files on the Rosencrantz.

As Brandon uses Walter’s notes to create the amber in the lab, Walter admits to Nina that he’s realized that Secretary Bishop is simply a man who faced the same decision, and Walter now has to do the same thing.

Olivia is unable to determine anything that would cause the hole at the Rosencrantz, and Peter suggests that Alice can see through because it’s her emotional bond to her dead husband’s counterpart. The hole has been created because on the Other Side, Derek lost Alice instead. The two of them pining for their own dead spouses has bonded them together and created the hole. Walter admits that it’s possible in theory but he’ll have to test it. Astrid calls to inform them that she’s picking up seismic activity at the Rosencrantz. The team goes there and Walter gives Broyles the remote detonator for the amber device. Olivia explains their theory that emotions are the key. They get word that Alice refuses to leave, and Walter warns that proximity doesn’t matter in any case. Peter and Olivia prepare to go in, and Broyles tells them to get out if he has to order the release of the amber.

In 6B, Olivia tries to get through to Alice and explain how she’ll have to let Derek go to close the hole. Alice has no idea what Olivia is talking about. Olivia tries to tell her that the people on the balcony died because Alice and the other Derek can’t let go of each other. Derek calls out to Alice, who becomes visible to Peter as the hole widens.

Outside, Broyles and Walter can see the shimmer as well, and Broyles orders Peter and Olivia out. They ignore him, and Walter warns that the vortex is starting. He gives the amber trigger device to Broyles.

Peter tells Alice that she needs to let Derek go, and says that she’s already had a lifetime with the person she loved. He says he can understand how she would refuse to lose something that was so real to her. Derek says that their girls miss Alice as well, and she points out that they never had children on This Side. Realizing that the other Derek isn’t her Derek, Alice tells him that she’s not his wife, and his wife is gone. The other Derek disappears and the vortex stops forming. Afterward, Alice admits that she may never understand what happened, but with all the impossible things she’s seen, she thinks that someday she will see Derek again.

At Massive Dynamic, Walter looks out across the city and Nina points out that he saved the lives of thousands. Walter warns that what they saw is a vision of things to come, and that soon vortexes will form beyond their ability to stop. When he admits that he doesn’t know enough to stop them, Nina tells him that he needs to learn and takes her hand.

Olivia goes to see Peter at his home and brings a bottle of alcohol. They share a toast to postponing disaster and she comments on what he said to Alice. She says that she wants what Peter wants and kisses him. Once they’re done, Olivia assures him that she didn’t see a glimmer because she’s no longer afraid, and they go to the bedroom together.

On the Other Side, Lincoln and Fauxlivia investigate reports of seismic activity at the Rosencrantz. When they arrive, they find no abnormal readings. Fauxlivia talks to the resident of 6B, Derek Merchant, and asks if he’s seen anything odd in the vicinity. He says that he hasn’t, and that he lives alone because his wife died two months ago. Fauxlivia asks him to call the Fringe hotline if he sees anything and leaves. Derek sits down alone and thumbs through a photo album of pictures of himself and Alice.
