Subject 9 - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Olivia is sleeping and light shines in through her drapes. The drapes start to blow in a wind and metal objects start to shift off the table. A glowing blue mass of energy appears and Olivia finally wakes up, grabs her gun and aims it at the mass. It disappears and Olivia tries to work out what happened when she sees the metal objects on the table.

At the lab, Walter is setting off a series of cameras using a peanut when Olivia arrives. He explains that he’s been trying to capture the apparition that has been haunting them on film, and needs to capture the image from only one angle. Walter is eager to see the ghost again, and asks Olivia if she’s had any visitations. She explains about the energy mass and that it touched her, leaving a burn. Olivia wonders if she is causing it with the same abilities she displayed during her childhood. As Walter takes her coat and has Astrid take some DNA tests, he sees a letter from Dr. Sumner, asking Olivia whether Walter should be remanded back to the institution. He quickly puts the letter back before Olivia can see him with it, and then sends Astrid and Olivia to get an atmospheric sample from the apartment.

Astrid scans the room with a Geiger counter and Walter gets some feedback as Olivia goes to the bathroom to get some metal samples. He sees Olivia on the video feed, backed up against the wall and yelling for help, and tells Astrid. She doesn’t see anything, but when she goes to the bathroom, Olivia suddenly backs up against the wall and yells for help. The bathroom door slams shut and the energy mass appears, pulling all the metal in the medicine cabinet toward it. It then disappears as Astrid breaks down the door and gets inside.

Back at the lab, Walter plays the video footage back for Astrid and Olivia, and suggests that the energy mass somehow affected time, and that it didn’t happen before. When Astrid asks him what he means, Walter explains that 25 years ago during the Cortexiphan trials, one boy displayed the ability to astrally project himself. However, it had the side effect of creating electromagnetic fields. Walter believed that the Cortexiphan children would share a psychic emotional bond and suggests that one of them is reaching out to Olivia. When she wonders why now, Walter admits that some of them had adverse reactions. The other children recognized that Olivia was the strongest and considered her their favorite. Walter says that they have to find the boy before he does more damage, but all he can remember is that the boy was Subject 9.

At Massive Dynamic, Nina Sharp is giving a speech on nanotechnology, explaining that they create technology and don’t worry about how it is used. Astrid and Olivia arrive to talk to her and Nina claims that the files were destroyed. Once they’re alone, Nina asks Olivia if it’s happening to her personally and offers to do whatever she can to help.

Astrid and Olivia go over the files and Olivia tells how Walter and Bell performed experiments on children using Cortexiphan. Walter, watching on Astrid’s video feed, turns off the monitor. Meanwhile, Olivia tells Astrid that she ran away and Walter and Bell shut down the project a few years later. They find the file on the boy, Cameron James, and return to the lab. Walter is there, packed and ready to go with Olivia to find Cameron. When Olivia point out that he hasn’t left the lab in three years, Walter insists that he’s the only one who can deal with Cameron.

Walter and Olivia go to New York City and he begins to panic while trying to hide it. They go to Cameron’s last known address but no one answers the door. Olivia breaks in and discover that the mail is addressed to Mark Little. However, Walter figures that Cameron lives there, pointing out that there is no metal. The landlady comes by and Olivia asks about Cameron. She explains that Cameron drives a supply truck and will be back in the morning. They stay the night in a hotel and Olivia leaves Walter alone and goes to her room next door. As she dials a number on the phone, she hears banging noises on the wall of Walter’s room. Olivia knocks and gets no answer, so uses her key to get in. Walter is on a rampage, ranting about the dirt in the room. Olivia assures him that it’s all in his mind, and realizes that he’s cut the palms of both hands. She binds the wounds and Walter admits that his fear of germs hasn’t manifested for years. He talks about how his wife Elizabeth liked the fact that he was filled with contradictions, and committed suicide after Peter died. Olivia invites him out for a root beer float.

Walter and Olivia go to a late-night diner and he demonstrates how to drink a root beer float. He then tells her that he saw the letter from St. Claire, and that he’s known for three years that they’d eventually realize he was a burden to Fringe Division. Olivia realizes that he left the lab to prove that he’s capable and Walter admits that it hasn’t gone well. She tells him that whatever she decides, it will be because it’s what best. Walter responds by asking who it is best for. Before she can respond, the silverware in the diner all starts to vibrate. The blue mass appears and moves in on Olivia. She shoots out the front window and gets outside, and the mass follows her into the street. A car swerves to miss her and hit the energy mass, causing it to dissipate.

The next morning, Lt. Daniels shows up to investigate the incident and asks Olivia what happened. She pulls rank and asks for all of the files and witness statements. Meanwhile, the EMT tries to get Walter to take some soup without success. Olivia goes over and tries to reassure him, but Walter believes that everything is happening because of what he did to Cameron 20 years ago. They go back to Cameron’s apartment and Walter continues to blame himself. Olivia points out that he concluded that none of the children manifested powers for more than 24 hours, and she believes that whatever Cameron is doing is deliberate.

Olivia leaves Walter at the doorstep and he uses her phone to call Astrid. She then goes upstairs and knocks on the door, and Cameron answers it. He invites her in and she asks for him by his real name. Cameron immediately runs down the stairs and out the front door. He bumps into Walter, who is trying to take the elevator. They both fall to the floor and the metal fittings start swaying. Olivia arrives and demands to know why he’s been attacking her. Cameron finally realizes who she is but insists that he hasn’t thought of her in years. However, he explains that when he feels any anxiety, metal objects start flying. Cameron went on a date and when he got nervous, the metal filings in the woman’s mouth started pulling out. Olivia asks why he changed his name and Cameron explains that Mark Little is his real name. Cameron James is his father’s name, and his father made the switch so he could access the trust fund that the government gave them and use it to buy drugs. Cameron admits that his Cortexiphan ability isn’t even useful. Walter says that he’s sorry and never meant to harm him. The energy mass appears and moves toward them and Cameron screams at it. It dissipates and they realize that someone else is generating the energy mass.

The trio goes to Cameron’s apartment and Walter admits that he has no ideas. Cameron wonders if he’s afraid to admit the truth, and asks what happened to Walter in the last 30 years. Olivia asks him to think of something, anything, and Walter speculates that the electromagnetism is a side effect of a distortion in time. He warns that the field will continue to expand, destroying everything in its path, and proposes that they have to create a counter-field to negate it. The only way to create it is to have Cameron use his ability. He wants no part of it and leaves, and Walter trails after him, explaining that his ability is directed by his emotional focus

Olivia has Astrid find a power grid terminal and Cameron goes there with them. They break in and Walter explains that when the mass appears again, Cameron will combine his energy with that of the power grid and destroy it. As they wait, Walter wanders off and Cameron asks Olivia if she’s heard of any of the others. He says that he hasn’t either and says that she’s luck she hasn’t had any side effects... or something else. Cameron wonders if she’s bringing the energy mass on herself, and if Walter would tell her if he thought she were. He tells Olivia that after she ran away, Walter wasn’t happy when the experiments stopped.

As Walter urinates, a chain starts moving toward him. He runs back as the energy mass appears, and Olivia insists that it isn’t her. Cameron focuses and directs the energy from the power grid terminal. The mass approaches Olivia and sees the face of Peter, the man from her dreams, inside of it. She tells Cameron to stop but he’s unable or unwilling to break off. Olivia finally fires her gun, severing the power lines.

At Reiden Lake, a naked Peter Bishop appears in the water. As two fishermen pick him up in their boat, the Observer watches from the shore.

At the power grid terminal, Olivia tells Walter what she saw and that she had a feeling that Peter didn’t want to hurt her. As they leave, Olivia offers to help Cameron however she can. He asks her to make Walter forget about him. As they go, Olivia ask Walter if he thinks they destroyed it. Walter admits that he isn’t sure and then points out that she behaved irrationally and relied on her instincts. Olivia agrees and Walter notes that when he does that, people think he’s crazy. Broyles calls to tell Olivia that the fishermen found Peter at Reiden Lake, and that Peter knows top-secret information about Fringe Division and all of them.

Olivia, Broyles, and Walter go to the hospital and the attending physician says that Peter is fine... and keeps talking about Olivia. The doctor takes her to Peter while Broyles goes to take a call. Walter sees the complete letter in Olivia’s jacket and reads it. She has marked that she doesn’t recommend hospitalization.

Olivia enters Peter’s room and he immediately recognizes her. However, Olivia has no idea who he is.
