And Those We've Left Behind - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
At a playground, Olivia and Peter are lying in the grass watching Walter on the swings. He tells her that she won’t get rid of him so easily and that they’ve found the perfect day. However, Olivia says that it’s too bad it has to go away, and tells Peter that he can’t ignore the problem and make it get away. She tells him that he’s the problem...

And Peter wakes up as Olivia enters his room at Fringe headquarters. She tells him that there’s something going on and it has to do with Peter’s appearance, and it has to do with time.

At Central Village in Boston, a mother, Anne, is making breakfast when her five-year-old daughter Samantha runs in. When the mother turns back to the sinks, she discovers that the entire kitchen has been badly burned as if in a fire. Her daughter is gone and Anne runs to the bedroom and finds a one-year-old Samantha in her crib. She grabs her child and gets her out, and turns to look at her apartment building, which is scorched. There’s a flash and suddenly Anne is holding her five-year-old daughter.

Olivia is driving Peter to Massive Dynamic for tests and he points out that it’s the first time he’s been outside since he got back. When he wonders what the temporal disturbances have to do with him, Olivia explains that just before he arrived, similar effects occurred. Peter wonders what Walter’s theory is and Olivia tells him that Walter is refusing to contemplate the matter and wants nothing to do with Peter. Lincoln calls Olivia to Anne’s apartment because of the incident.

At the apartment, Walter has Astrid check for interdimensional breaches but finds nothing. Peter and Olivia arrive and she has him stand in place while she talks to Broyles. Broyles informs her that there was a flash fire with no apparent cause, and that Samantha changed age. Meanwhile, Peter hears Samantha looking for one of her stuffed animals and helps her find it. Olivia calls him away, while Lincoln and Astrid confirm that the scorch marks made a perfect circle. There was a fire there four years ago, corresponding to Samantha’s age change. Broyles orders Peter to the lab for examination, ignoring Olivia’s warning that Walter wants nothing to do with his “son”.

At the lab, Walter pokes and prods Peter, referring to him only as the “subject.” He tells Olivia to inform Broyles that he doesn’t believe Peter is the cause of the disturbance and then walks away, ignoring Peter’s objections to his theory. Peter realizes that Walter sleeps in his office and Olivia explains that Walter has never been able to leave the lab since she checked him out of the mental institution. Realizing he won’t get any help from his father, Peter starts working out the formulas for time distortions, warning that there may not be any consistency. He warns that the anomalies will increase and become more dangerous.

Three teenagers are heading to a concert when the image of a train passes in front of them. The driver, Dylan, stops just in time and they get out to watch the train enter and pass through what appears to be a spherical ball of light.

At the lab the next day, Peter admits that he can’t work out the equations. Olivia has confirmed that there have been 65 timeslips within a 40-mile radius of Boston. Walter comes in to make a sandwich, ignoring Peter, and Olivia asks for his help. He refuses until Peter leaves and goes back to his office, and Olivia mentions the visions that she and Walter both had. Peter has no idea he was appearing to them. He insists that he’s supposed to be there and they may have seen echoes of the timeline. Lincoln comes in and tells them about the incident with the train, and Peter goes to get the Geiger counter. When he turns around, he discovers that he’s at the site of the accident. Dylan tells them that the effect was spherical, and Lincoln tells Peter that they drove there.

As they head back to Boston, Lincoln confirms that the track was decommissioned four years ago. Pete says that they might have the makings of a pattern, and then finds himself back at the accident just as his team arrives. Peter examines Dylan’s car and finds high levels of radiation and exceedingly brittle metal. He starts to tell Lincoln and Olivia about it, only to find himself back in the car driving back as time skips again. Peter tells them what he found and that the neutron radiation responsible doesn’t occur in nature.

In Brookline, Massachusetts, Raymond Green watches his wife Kate work on mathematical equations. She reminds him of everything he has to do and Raymond checks his watch, and says that she doesn’t have to remind him anymore. Kate continues to write in her notebook while Raymond checks his watch as it counts down to 0. When it reaches 0, Kate disappears. Raymond, unsurprised, goes into the next room where Kate is sitting in a chair, all but oblivious to the world. He gets her tea but she has no idea who he is.

Walter is listening to music in his lab and watching Peter and Olivia trying to locate the neutron pulse based on the two locations, the apartment and the train crossing. Lincoln receives two new reports of circularly shaped timeslips that are four years old. Walter interrupts and explains that the four locations represent Fibonacci’s Golden Spiral and that they are centered around Brookline.

Raymond sees to Kate, who has no idea what time it is. He then goes to his basement with Kate’s equations from earlier and enters them into a computer, and activates a machine. Time jumps back four years and a timer displays 47 minutes. Raymond goes back upstairs to where Kate is back to normal and working on her equations.

As the agents canvass Brookline, Peter asks if she had dreams of him in a park with Walter, and if she felt anything. Olivia says that he’s a stranger and had no reason to feel anything toward him.

As Raymond gets a book for Kate, he sees the agents outside. He takes Kate to the basement and explains that he’s built a time chamber using her theories and equations. Raymond warns her that it only works for up to 47 minutes until he can enter the completed equations, and that she needs to finish them as quickly as possible. Kate asks him what year it is outside and Raymond admits that it’s 2011, not 2007.

An agent approaches the Green houses and walks through a field effect. He screams in horror and then disintegrates as the others look on. They contact Walter, who has Olivia spray fingerprint powder to see the edges of the time distortion, which surrounds the entire house. Peter listens in and realizes that they need a mobile Faraday Cage that will block the electromagnetic field. Walter angrily says that knows what a Faraday Cage is and goes to work. As they wait, Lincoln suggests they use Walter’s spiral to predict where the next incident will occur.

Kate watches from inside the house and tells her husband that some things were meant to be theories. When he yells that they don’t have time, Kate asks why he did it and Raymond finally says that he lost her.

Broyles checks the couple’s background and learns that Raymond is an electrical engineer and Kate was a theoretical physicist. Three years ago she suffered from early-onset Alzheimer’s. Lincoln tells them that they’ve mapped the next incident, and it will take place in the Melville Tunnel, which goes under the river and didn’t exist four years ago. If it ceases to exist, all of the drivers will drown. As Broyles sends Lincoln to conduct the evacuation, Astrid arrives with the harness and Peter insists that he has to go in. Olivia objects but Peter and Broyles agree that only Peter has the necessary experience to shut it down.

Astrid hooks Peter up while Walter warns that the environment in the bubble may override the device and kill Peter. Peter approaches the house and steps safely through the temporal field. Walter, watching on Astrid’s portable camera, admits that Peter is very smart.

In the basement, Raymond tries to get Kate to solve the problem, and she tells him that she already solved it, and has to write it down. They hear Peter walking around upstairs and Raymond knocks him out when he comes downstairs.

Outside, Lincoln calls Astrid to tell her that they’re trying to clear out the civilians, and that the time distortion field has appeared.

Peter wakes up as Raymond explains to his wife that he was unable to get the time chamber to work until three days ago. He refuses to turn it off and Peter grabs a baseball bat to threaten him. When he tries to shut off the machine, the Greens warn him that if it isn’t properly shut down, it could destroy the entire city block. Peter tells them about the time distortions and Kate agrees to shut it down in return for immunity for her husband, who didn’t know about the repercussions.

While Peter relays the conditions to Olivia, Raymond tells Kate that when she got sick, he didn’t have the chance to be all the things for her that she was to him. Kate tells him that what he has isn’t living, and that he needs to go out in the world. Raymond refuses to give up and says that once she writes down the completed equation in her book, he can recreate the time chamber. She agrees, saying that they’d have to move somewhere far away, and starts writing down the equation.

As the tunnel starts to disappear, water floods through the time distortion.

Peter returns to tell the couple that Raymond won’t be prosecuted. The couple kisses and Kate tells Raymond that she loves him. He then turns off the time chamber and the 2007 Kate disappears.

In the tunnel, the time distortion ends and the flooding stops.

Later, the FBI agents remove Raymond’s equipment while Raymond reassures Kate. He takes the hidden notebook out of a drawer only to discover that the 2007 Kate crossed out all of the equations and left him a note: “Raymond, I love you. How you repay me... just love me and live your life.”

Olivia and Peter stop by Fringe headquarters and she talks to Lincoln. Broyles congratulates Peter, who admits that Kate’s theory only worked because of Peter’s presence three days ago. He now believes that he’s the anomaly and is in the wrong place, and everyone he knows are somewhere else. Broyles arranges for him to stay at Walter’s faculty housing at the Harvard campus. Peter and Olivia go there and she tells him that there’ll be a FBI out front. He points out he has nowhere to run to, and Olivia offers to talk to Walter and convince him to help. She then realizes that her other self was important to Peter, and he admits that his Olivia was and is.
