Olivia goes to her medicine cabinet and checks her bottle of anti-migraine pills. She then makes her way to the local drugstore and asks for a refill of her prescription. The pharmacist tells her that it’s her last refill until her doctor gives her a new prescription. As Olivia leaves and walks down the street, she sees Lincoln in a diner and goes in to visit him. She explains that she went out to get some fresh air for her migraine and he invites her to join him for a cup of coffee. They talk and Lincoln explains that he hasn’t slept since he’s arrived in Boston and learned about the reality of Fringe events. When Olivia says that it will eventually becomes his life, Lincoln asks if that’s what happened to her and she admits that it did.

In Beacon Hill, a man, Jack, is running down the street when he gets a call from his wife Meg. Jack says that he’s almost there to meet her and thinks someone is following him. He loses the signal and thinks he hears someone behind him. As Jack gets to his apartment, he gets a call from Meg saying that the cops are on their way. He gets inside but an invisible force grabs Jack and shoves him inside.

When the police arrive two minutes later, they find the man dead, his skin and face bleached white. An invisible man slips by them but one of the officers hears him and opens fire. Before they can pursue, Meg comes running out and panics, realizing her husband is dead.

Peter is shopping with a FBI agent and chafing under being escorted. When he comes over to help a boy reach a Halloween costume, Tim stops him and helps the boy himself. After the boy leaves, Peter demands an explanation and Tim says that he’s been instructed to limit his interaction with civilians. The agent insists it’s not personal but Peter isn’t convinced.

Broyles calls in Olivia, Lincoln, and Astrid and briefs them on what happened to Jack. They talk to the officer, who claims that he overreacted. Lincoln assures him that they’ll believe him no matter what he says, and the officer admits that he felt a ghost pass him by. Meanwhile, Astrid checks the body and tells Walter that the victim’s neck is broken. Walter is busy eating onion rings and suggests that Jack may have been scared to death. Outside, Lincoln examines the broken glass from the door and finds traces of blood.

As they wait for Walter to come up with a theory, Olivia asks Astrid if what they see gets to her. Astrid says that it does and she sees an agency shrink to deal with it. She asks who Olivia talks to, and Olivia admits that it’s weird that she doesn’t. Lincoln shows them the blood sample and says that they can rule out ghosts.

In a sub-basement, the killer is immersed in a tub of chemicals. After a few minutes he emerges, visible, and checks to confirm that he can see himself.

Later, the killer is in a building and calls for an elevator. There’s a woman inside and Bryant gets in and eyes the woman. Another passenger that she knows boards, and the two get off when it reaches their floor. The killer looks at his reflection in the metal panel and sees that he’s starting to disappear.

At the lab, Olivia tells the others that she has confirmed there were three similar bodies found in the area. Astrid has been unable to find the DNA yet, while Walter examines Jack’s body and talks about African tribes that use the body parts of albinos for good luck. He finds a mucus residue and explains that it contains chromatophores, which are found in creatures that can blend into their background. Astrid checks the hospital records and confirms that the blood belongs to a baby named Bryant, that died in 1989 after four days. Walter hears them talking and suggests they may be looking for a ghost after all.

Lincoln and Olivia go to Parkview Hospital and check the records, and confirm that Bryant had an unknown genetic variant that no one could diagnose. Olivia gets another migraine and takes her pills, and they talk to the attending nurse, Jaffe. She says that Bryant was very pale when he was born, and the lights burned the baby’s skin. The doctor in charge, Brian West, told her that Bryant had died and Jaffe was relieved that he wasn’t suffering. However, she tells the agents that as the baby was carried out, she thought she heard Bryant crying. Jaffe tells them that the baby’s corpse was taken to a private insurance company for an autopsy, and Olivia recognizes the name, Cyprox Incorporated. As they leave, Olivia explains that Cyprox paid for her mother’s medical bills when she had cancer, and they were a subsidiary of a company that became Massive Dynamic.

Olivia and Lincoln meet with Nina, who immediately admits that their suspicions that Cyprox abducted the baby are true. She explains that Bryant’s deformity made him suitable for genetic experimentation, and they injected chromatophores, allowing him to blend into his surroundings. The treatment also allowed him to survive. Nina says that Cyprox did the research and she and Bell had no idea what was going on. She insists that Bryant would have died without the treatment, and Olivia suggests that Bryant would have been better off dead. Nina explains that she only found out about it in 2001 when there was a fire in a lab, and the boy, nicknamed Unique Gene, or “Eugene,” presumably died.

Back at the apartment building, the woman from the elevator, Julie, returns to her apartment, unaware that Eugene has slipped in behind her. She calls for her cat Ziggy but gets no response. She goes to the bedroom and discovers the bed is covered in leaves. Julie hears someone leave the apartment and runs to the door, and discovers that it’s open. She quickly locks and bolts it.

At his new residence, Peter is pinning schematics of the Machine to the wall when Lincoln arrives with a box of equipment. Peter thanks him for treating him like a human being and explains that he hopes to use the Machine to return to his own timeline. Lincoln comments that none of it phases Olivia and admits that he’s never met anyone like Olivia before. Peter says that he knows what he means, and Lincoln asks if he was with Olivia in the other timeline. When Peter confirms it, Lincoln apologizes but Peter assures him that the Olivia in this world isn’t his. Lincoln gets a call from Walter, who goes to the lab with Olivia. Walter has an octopus in the lab and is prepared to experiment, and Olivia suggests that Eugene may be killing people to steal their pigment. Walter figures that Eugene’s chromatophores are absorbing pigment, but warns that Eugene will require a great deal to become visible and will produce more victims.

In the building’s parking garage, a businessman gets into his car and Eugene smashes open his window and kills him.

Walter calls everyone into the lab and tells them that Eugene is dying. If he undoes the treatment that gave him control of his ability, he will revert to his original condition. He also produces an ultraviolet light and uses it to make an invisible rat visible. Broyles calls and tells them that they’ve found another body. They go to the apartment and talk to the doorman, who confirms that the exterior doors were locked and no one left the building. A dog picks up a scene at the door to the upper levels and they seal the building. Once the building is secured, the agents bring in more dogs, evacuate the residents, seal the elevators, and start searching with ultraviolet lights. They split up and Olivia takes a floor on her own, one that is under construction. However, she inadvertently steps into an open shaft and only just manages to catch the edge. As she tries to pull herself up, Eugene emerges from the shadows, visible in the ultraviolet light.

The tactical officers find discarded clothing and realize Eugene is using his abilities. Meanwhile, Olivia asks Eugene to pull himself up. He tells her how important it is to be seen, pulls her up, and then takes her gun. When Olivia says that she just wants to help him and that he’s dying, Eugene says that she thinks he’s there to return him to the military before he self-destructs. He says that he’s spent his life watching other people, and tells Olivia that recognition is existence. Olivia tells him that Walter can cure him if Eugene will come back to the lab with him, but he refuses to go back to a lab.

As Lincoln and the others close in, Eugene runs away. The agents pursue him but only find the discarded gun. They search the entire floor and realize that Eugene has escaped. As they start letting the residents back into the building, Eugene comes out, having restored his pigmentation temporarily. The police dogs bark and Olivia realizes that something is wrong. Before she can pursue the matter, the tactical officers call them into the sub-basement where Eugene lived and conducted his experiments. The shelves are filled with stolen tokens from the residents, and Olivia realizes that Eugene wants to be seen, not cured.

The next day, Julie is taking the elevator when Eugene gets in. She comments that he’s there every day and thought he might have been sick and wouldn’t be there. When Julie says that it’s too beautiful a day to be sick, Eugene agrees and then introduces herself. Julie introduces herself and steps out, and Eugene watches her go. Once the elevator door closes, Eugene collapses and dies.

Later, Olivia goes to see Nina and tells her that they found Eugene’s body. She notes that Eugene could never be normal and Nina realizes that Olivia is worried that she isn’t normal. Olivia wonders if the cortexiphan treatments stunted her emotions, but Nina says that she’s normal and has to find her own place in the world. She says that life was work before she took in Olivia and Rachel, and now she can’t imagine her life without them. Nina assures Olivia that when the time is right, she’ll know.

Peter comes to see Lincoln at Fringe Headquarters and gives him a present. Lincoln looks at it and Peter tells him to trust it. Olivia comes in to collect their paperwork and suggests she might see him at the diner. Lincoln agrees and waits until Olivia leaves to look at Peter’s present: a pair of wireframe glasses to replace his thicker ones.

That night at the diner, Lincoln is by himself at the diner. Olivia is at her apartment preparing to go out when someone sprays gas into the apartment. She collapses, unconscious, and two men come in. One shorts out the security camera while another gives her an injection and says y that when Olivia wakes up, she won’t remember the last two hours. The men then leave... with Nina.
