The Other Side

At Fringe Division, Colonel Broyles watches surveillance footage of Dunham and Agent Lee bringing in Lincoln, who insists that Walternate is responsible for the new shapeshifters. Once he confirms where his agents have hidden Lincoln, Broyles takes out a syringe filled with yellow liquid and goes after Lincoln. However, Walter arrives with Peter to release Lincoln. He asks to talk to Broyles privately and informs him that the new shapeshifters have infiltrated the government and that Agent Murphy was a shapeshifter. Broyles informs his superior that Dunham and Lee are going to the warehouse at the location of Murphy’s last call.

The two agents arrive at the warehouse and go inside, and discover that everything has been cleaned out except for one tank. The scarred David Robert Jones is waiting for them and he explains that the shapeshifter in the tank was an accountant, but that he’s given her true life. Jones informs the agents that he’s created 47 perfect shapeshifters, and then kills the one in the tank. When Dunham asks him why, Jones asks her to imagine what he’ll do now that he’s casually demonstrated he’ll kill someone he cares about without remorse. When Lee asks what he wants, Jones tells them that they don’t have the authority and tells them to take him to their leader.



This Side

At Harvard, Olivia visits the lab and chats briefly with Walter. However, she’s there primarily to see Astrid and ask her to analyze the blood sample that she took from the wounded Observer at the Orpheum. Astrid realizes that something is up and Olivia tells her that she sent Peter and Lincoln to the Other Side and that they’re overdue to report, and Broyles doesn’t know about their unauthorized mission.

The Other Side

Dunham and Lee deliver Jones to Fringe Division and inform Broyles about the empty warehouse. No one has been able to identify Jones, and they believe that Jones deliberately waited for them and let himself be captured. Broyles has them take Jones to an interrogation room and tells them that Lincoln has been released.



As Lincoln is released and meets with Peter, who wants to leave now that Walternate has given him the blueprints to the Machine. Lincoln would rather stay and find out more about the shapeshifters, but Peter isn’t interested now that he has what he want. However, when Jones is brought through the control room, Peter recognizes him.

Colonel Broyles goes to see Jones, who calmly asks for a cup of tea and assumes that Broyles wants to avoid unnecessary deaths. Jones then tells the colonel that the dead shapeshifter, Brandon Fayette, had a hard drive hidden in his office. He tells Broyles to get it in the next twelve minutes. Walternate, who has been washing through the one-way mirror, tells Dunham and Lee to fly to the DoD base to get the hard drive. When Broyles comes out, Peter says that he knows Jones from This Side, which is why they don’t have any records of him. He asks to speak to Jones and Walternate agrees against Broyles’ wishes.

Peter confronts Jones and tells him that he knows where he really came from, and that he was falling apart due to a teleportation error the last time he saw him. Jones appears intrigued but insists that he’s never seen Peter before. Peter explains that when Jones passed through a dimensional portal, he shut it off partway and cut him in half. The prisoner notes that he is in one piece and then tells them that they’re out of time.



Fringe Division receives a call from a woman, unaware that she is posing as Dr. Samuels at a New York ER. Once she makes sure that they’re listening and have put Jones on the line, she releases a canister of toxic gas and leaves, barring the door behind her. The gas kills the 16 staff and patients inside and Fringe Division can hear their screams.

This Side

Broyles calls Olivia into his office and informs her that his counterpart has already told him about Lincoln and Peter. However, he puts her insubordination on the back burner and tells her that they’ve identified Jones as a prisoner on This Side who escaped from a German prison three years ago and made his way to the Other Side.

The Other Side

Jones tells his captors that the next attack will be even worse if they don’t release him. Bishop agrees to release him, saying that they can track him and learn where his current base of operation is. Dunham has checked the hard drive and determined that it contains footage from government satellites. Lee has already put a tracker in Jones’ tea and Lincoln offers to help follow Jones. Broyles release Jones, who takes the hard drives and leaves, smiling.



Broyles, Lee, Dunham, and Lincoln follow Jones to a sidewalk café and they assume that he’s waiting until the lunch crowd arrives. As they wait, Lincoln is partnered with Dunham and notes that she seems close to Lee. She hastily tells him that Lee is just her partner and that she recently broke up with her boyfriend. Before Lincoln can pursue the matter, Jones gets up, takes a brown bag from a trashcan, and removes a bundle of money. He then asks a teenage boy to hand out the money, claiming that he’s dying and has no use for it. As the crowd gathers, Jones slips away. Peter is with Farnsworth at Fringe Division and they look at the screen as forty new tracker signals appear on the screen. Jones moves away, repeats the same operation, and then takes a drink from thermos and makes his own signal disappear. As he leaves via a waiting car, Jones exchanges glances with Colonel Broyles.

That night, Walternate has dinner with his wife at a fancy restaurant, and she quickly senses that he’s had a setback. However, when Walternate admits that he took a gamble, his wife tells him that it must be more than that. He finally explains that he’s examined the Machine blueprints but is no more able to help Peter now then he was able to help their dying son. Walternate still blames himself for Walter did years ago, and Elizabeth says that she has an idea of how they can help Peter.



At Fringe Division, Farnsworth examines the copied hard drive files and confirms that they’re a list of locations and geological information. When Peter examines the information, Dunham and Lee send out facial recognition patterns on Jones, and Lincoln suggests that someone provided Jones with the proper tracker signal. Peter finishes analyzing the data and tells them that Jones is looking for amphilicite, a rare other that is inert in its natural form but can be refined to provide a near-endless source of energy, enough to rip a hole between universe. The area with the most amphilicite is the Hudson River Valley and Mohonk Quarry is the most-referenced location on the hard drive. They confirm that Jones hasn’t shown up yet and head out to ambush him. However, when they arrive, there’s no sign of Jones or his shapeshifters. Peter, back at Fringe Division, compares the satellite photos to Jones’ files and realizes that Jones ism mining the amphilicite on This Side and they’re in the wrong universe.

This Side

Jones comes through the portal device, operated by Nadine and her shapeshifter team.

Walter is working in the lab when Elizabeth Bishop comes in. He is momentarily taken aback at the site of his dead wife, but soon realizes that she’s the Other Side version of his wife. Elizabeth tells Walter that she needs him to help save Peter.

Olivia and Broyles meet Peter and Lincoln as they come back through the dimensional bridge.

Walter serves tea and apologizes to Elizabeth for taking her son, saying he had no right after his own son died. He believes that God has never forgiven him for the hubris that led to his actions, even though Elizabeth tells him that he simply made a mistake. Unconvinced, Walter explains that he asked for a sign of forgiveness but God never sent it. Elizabeth assures him that he isn’t beyond redemption and that if she forgave Walter a long time ago, so can God. Taking his hand, Elizabeth tells Walter that they have both lost sons but that some of them live on in the modern-day Peter, and that he needs Walter’s help. When Walter says that he’s afraid, Elizabeth reminds him that Peter is as well.



At the quarry, Jones has his people load the amphilicite onto a truck. Olivia and the others arrive and Nadine and her shapeshifters hold them off while Jones drives to the portal. While Peter and the others shoot down the shapeshifters, killing Nadine, Olivia drives after Jones. Realizing what she’s doing, Peter calls her on the walkie-talkie and tells her to stop before Jones closes the portal. Olivia brakes just in time as the portal closes, cutting off the first foot of her SUV.



The two teams meet at the bridge point and Walternate tells them that have to work together now that they know they have a common enemy. The others agree but wonder what Jones is up to. The others are concerned that they have no idea what Jones has planned, but Peter tells them that Jones is afraid of him, and that “his” Fringe division stopped Jones before and they can do it again now. As they leave, Olivia thanks Peter for saving her life but he says that he has to go home and get some rest before they debrief him on Jones.



At home, Peter is surprised when Walter leaves his lab to come see him. Walter comments that Peter’s mother was a wonderful woman and Peter realizes that the Other Side’s Elizabeth came to see Walter. The older man says that he’ll help Peter get home, and Peter says that while Walternate surprised him, Walter is exactly the man he remembers.

At a secret location, Jones contacts his ally by computer and says that Phase One is underway. He asks about Phase Two... and Nina Sharp tells him that “she” is almost ready.
