In Which We Meet Mr. Jones - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
FBI agent Mitchell Loeb leads an assault team to a pier in Weymouth, Massachusetts to find contraband shipped from Germany. They stop a truck from leaving but there's no contraband aboard: only teddy bears. Loeb reports to his superior and long-time friend Broyles, saying that the man running the operation, Joseph Smith, had a science background and has since disappeared. He figures Smith made the contraband vanish. As Broyles goes over the shipping manifest and notices a seven-pound weight discrepancy, Mitchell clutches at his chest and falls to the ground. Broyles gets him to the hospital where the operation team opens up Loeb's chest. Mitchell's wife Jessica arrives and he tries to reassure her... as the surgeon discovers a seven-pound parasitical worm wrapped around Mitchell's heart.

Broyles calls in Olivia, Peter, and Walter to investigate. Walter doesn't recognize the parasite from his government projects but suspects that someone has created it through genetic manipulation. He has Broyles move Mitchell to the Harvard lab for further examination. Jessica comes there to find out about her husband's status. She also gives Olivia something she found in Mitchell's possessions: a copy of A Christmas Carol with a piece of paper with dozens of numbers typed on it.

Walter tries to take a sample of the parasite and it reacts by constricting around Mitchell's heart, plunging him perilously close to death. Peter manages to revive him while Walter gets his sample and determines that someone left a consistent strand of DNA in its genetic structure when they created it. Astrid recognizes the code sequences and determines it spells out several different three-letter combinations. Olivia recognizes one of them as ZFT: the initials of a group John Scott was tracking in Germany. She passes the information on to Broyles who explains that ZFT is a group of terrorists associated with Pattern events who traffic in fringe science. A rogue biochemist, David Robert Jones, is believed to work with them and Mitchell was investigating him. Jones has been arrested by Interpol and is being held at Wissenschaft Prison in Frankfurt, Germany. Broyles notes that the German government has refused to give them access to Jones, but Olivia insists that she can get in to see him.

At the lab, Peter examines Mitchell's IV drip and notices small roots in the tube. Walter examines them and says that the parasite is spreading throughout Mitchell's bloodstream and he only has 24 hours at best. Olivia calls to let them know she's heading to Germany and they give her the update on Mitchell.

Olivia arrives in Frankfurt and meets with an old friend and former military officer, Lucas Vogel, who now works for the German legislature. He has arranged a meeting with Warden Lennox, who runs the prison. Lennox doesn't want to see them but they barge in and Olivia refuses to back down. The warden, impressed, agrees to pass on a message to Jones.

Broyles comes to the lab to check on Mitchell's status and discovers Walter in his usual distracted state. He tells Peter to get his father to focus but a snappish Peter responds that there's nothing they can do and Walter won't be changing any time soon. Charlie calls Broyles and informs him that they've analyzed the numbers in Mitchell's belongings and determined that each number refers to a FBI case file... out of their office. Apparently there's a second mole in the organization, one with a higher security clearance than John Scott had. The numbers make reference to the phone number of Joseph Smith, and Broyles gets a team to arrest Smith.

As they wait for the warden, Lucas talks to Olivia, noting he's glad she's there and hinting at their past romantic relationship. Lennox returns and informs them that Jones received the message and has agreed to see Olivia the next morning. However, Lennox can only allow her to meet with Jones for 14 minutes due to German law. The warden gives her a note with Jones' only demand: he wants to talk to Smith. She calls and talks to Peter, who informs her Broyles is preparing to arrest Smith. Broyles and his team are under radio silence so Peter drives to Smith's address to warn Broyles not to kill the man. Peter is unable to get past the barricade and spots Smith climbing out of his second-story window as the SWAT team close in. He draws a gun and runs and a SWAT officer is forced to shoot and kill him. Peter tells Broyles that they needed Smith to get the information from Jones. Mitchell's condition worsens and Peter calls to inform Walter and Astrid that they've lost Smith. Walter tells him to bring in the corpse.

As Olivia prepare to leave now that Smith is dead and they can't give Jones what he wants, Lucas wonders what happened to their relationship. He asks her to stay the night at his place, saying he's become an excellent cook. They're interrupted when Peter calls Olivia to tell her to make sure Jones doesn't learn that Smith is dead. Meanwhile, Walter sees Smith's corpses and realizes that he was shot in the head. He warns that brain damage will force him to alter his standard procedure. Walter hooks up Smith's brain with wires and Peter remembers how his father used to jolt his brain with electricity. Peter is less than thrilled at the memory. As Walter tests the circuitry, he explains that they'll need to use Peter as a relay to ask Smith their questions.

Olivia stays with Lucas and over dinner and wine she talks about how John Scott betrayed her and betrayed the FBI. Lucas apologizes for screwing up their relationship, admitting he was afraid of where it was going. They start to kiss but Peter calls to give Olivia an update. He quickly notices something is wrong but she says she's fine and hangs up. She then reconsiders and tells Lucas that she'll stay at her hotel tonight.

The next day, Olivia goes to the prison as Walter hooks Peter up to Smith. They test the procedure but Peter is unable to get anything through the connection. They tell Olivia to stall and she meets with Jones, who is pleased to meet her. Olivia informs him that she'll relay Jones' question to Smith, and wonders why he didn't negotiate for anything else. He informs her that she's making a false assumption and says he's not the one who infected Mitchell with the parasite.

Given their lack of success, Walter tries a new tactic: he gives Peter a sedative to suppress his higher brain functions and let him get a clearer image from Smith. As they proceed, Broyles arrives with Jessica and the two of them watch. In Germany, Jones suggests to Olivia that the people behind the whole thing are manipulating both of them to get information from him. Suspecting something is up, he asks her why she hasn't relayed his question yet. Walter finally gets a steady hook up and Astrid has Olivia get Jones' question: "Where does the gentleman live?" With time running out, Mitchell has a seizure and Astrid has to put Olivia on hold to deal with it. Stalling for time, Olivia asks Jones why he thinks Smith will cooperate. Jones tells her that the people he works for are loyal and wonders if she can say the same about her people.

With Mitchell stabilized, Astrid reestablished contact with Olivia and they ask Smith the question. When Peter doesn't get a response, Walter ups the voltage. Meanwhile, Olivia's 14 minutes are up and a guard arrives to escort her out. She tells him to wait and Peter finally gets an image of two groups of vertical lines. Walter realizes that the bullet wound destroyed the part of Smith's brain that processes horizontal lines. Peter realizes that the lines are the vertical parts of the letters forming two words. Filling in the lines, he comes up with an answer: "Little Hill." Astrid passes it to Olivia as she's taken out, and she calls it out to Jones. He responds by giving her the antidote and telling her to inject it directly into the parasite. Outside, Olivia gives the formula to Walter who quickly makes a dose and injects it into the parasite, killing it.

As she leaves for the States, Olivia talks to Lucas and wonders who she can trust given Jones' hints of a mole. He offers to look into it and she accepts his help.

Broyles visits a recovering Mitchell in the hospital. He asks if Mitchell learned who the second mole is who worked with ZFT, but Mitchell admits he only knew about John Scott. Jessica arrives and Broyles leaves the happy couple together. Outside, he talks to Olivia who says they still don't have any important answers. He suggests that she be satisfied with the little she has... but notes that she wouldn't be who she was if she settled for that. He admits he's proud to be working with her. As he leaves, Peter arrives and they watch the Loebs. They're unaware that the couple is discussing the fact that their plan worked and that Jessica heard Peter say "Little Hill."
