Hughes was dreaming of a time he went into Roy's room in a complete mess. Roy was planning on killing himself and committing a human transmutation. Hughes lashes out at him trying to talk him out of it. He is soon woken up to see the Fuhrer is there. The Fuhrer tells Hughes what he discovered, but he isn't satisfied and asks if he could continue an investigation. He finds out from the Fuhrer's secretary that the man he wants to talk with, Marcoh, that he's in Central. Hughes gets the info he needs from Ed and Al, and discovers that they're looking for another method to achieve their goal. They were planning on going to their teacher's home town, and when Winry sees a place called Rush Valley is on the way she begs to go along. Ed soon gives in and lets her. She also finds out that they weren't actually going to their teacher's hometown, but to where Scar is. Meanwhile, Scar meets up with his master in the desert who tells him that revenge will only lead to more revenge. Soon, they are attacked. Scar easily forces the group to retreat, though. Roy finds out about the Elrics being in the hospital and soon leaves to go to Central. Hughes soon leaves his home in order to investigate something. He discovers something shocking about Juliet Douglas and goes to the hotel that has Marcoh. Before he can open the door, he is attacked by Lust. Ross manages to save Hughes and they escape. In a phone booth, Hughes tries calling Roy in roder to tell him what happened, only to find out he has left. He soon finds out that Ross is Envy and slits Ross's throat. Thinking she's dead, he started leaving, until Envy transformed into his wife. Envy then shot Hughes, ultimately killing him. While dying, Hughes remembers what he said to Roy one day. At the funeral, Hughes was promoted. His daughter and wife were greatly upset. On the train, Ed sees a ghost verson of Hughes waving at him.
