Demona exacts vengeance on Elisa, shooting her with a poisonous dart. She tells Elisa to tell Goliath and the others that only she has the antidote. Unknown to Demona, Elisa's badge saved her from any penetration.

Knowing that if they don't go, Demona would conclude that Elisa was fine. So to throw off any suspicion, Goliath and Hudson go to face Demona.

As they encounter Demona, Hudson reminisces on how an old battle against the Archmage back in 975 (where they had to save the life of a poisoned Prince Malcolm) is similar to the one they face now . . . .

Episode Notes

Demona has a grudge on Elisa and tries to kill her, something that will reoccur in later episodes.

In this episode it is revealed that Hudson lost his eye in a battle with the Archmage.

"Fulmenos Venite" - The lightning spell cast by the Archmage in the 984 AD flashback scenes, means literally "Lightning Come!". From the latin word 'Fulminatus' or 'Fulminare' meaning 'to flash' or 'strike with lightning,' and 'Venite' meaning 'to come.'

In this episode we understand why Princess Katherine wasn't fond of the gargoyles in the first episode.

The laser gun used by Demona seemed to be one of the 37 missing Xanatos's guns that Owen mentioned in "Deadly Force".

This episode marks the first appearance of the Archmage (David Warner).

Episode Quotes

(In 984 A.D.)
Prince Malcolm: (to Princess Katherine) Hush now. The gargoyles will get you if you don't behave.

(In 984 A.D.)
Hudson: You shouldn't frighten the girl with threats of gargoyles, my liege. We would never harm a child.

Goliath: You seem introspective, old friend. Are you all right?
Hudson: Just dreaming old dreams.

Demona: You can run, but you can't hide. In fact, you can't even run.

Demona: This game is futile. You were too old to play it a thousand years ago. I could just rake this room with the laser. There's no way you'd escape. But I'm giving you one last chance, Hudson. Goliath's time is over. I am the leader now. Swear fealty to me and I'll let you live. Very well then. Die, hiding like the cowards you are.

(In 984 A.D.)
Demona: I don't know who's the bigger fool: him for going, you for following, or me for not leaving you both.

Demona: I'm smarter, stronger. I'm younger than you! Your pride will cost you your life!
Hudson: But I know something you don't, something that comes only with age. I know how to wait.

Lexington: What's for breakfast?
Broadway: I was thinking blintzes.

Demona: You can run, but you can't hide. And this time you can't even run.

Episode Goofs

Gargoyles turn to stone with the sunrise, whether the beams contact them or not. However, Goliath, Hudson and Demona only turn to stone when the clouds on the shy clear out to reveal a fully risen sun.

Demona's rifle should not have turned to stone unless she considered it her own, which seems improbable.

Cultural References

The Fugitive (1993)

The scene where Demona confronts Hudson on the edge of a sewage pipe, and Hudson dives off into the water, bear stricking resemblace to the scene from The Fugitive where Harrison Ford's character dives off to escape Tommy Lee Jones's character.
