  Episode Notes
This episode begins in media res.

We finally meet Mace Malone, who was mentioned in "The Silver Falcon."

Mace's key is number 23. This may be a reference to the "Law of Fives." The number 23 is also related to various Illuminati-linked conspiracy theories (see Cultural Reference).

Brooklyn and Broadway appear but have no dialogue.

  Episode Quotes
Mace Malone: I'm sure you've noticed by now this is no ordinary hotel. The Cabal is designed to decimate one's grip on reality. Once your defenses are down, we step in and strip your mind of its most precious memories and darkest secrets. By the time a guest leaves here, he's little more than a mindless cretin. Funny how the least little thing sets him off. I know what you're thinking. Open window. Too good to be true, but too tempting to pass up. I'll bet that smarts. But you know what they say, no pain, no gain. Bravo, Goliath, you've earned your freedom. Trouble is, nothing's what it seems at the Hotel Cabal.

Mace Malone: Welcome to the Hotel Cabal. Although we've served a wide variety of guests over the years, you're our very first gargoyle. Tamper, temper. I'd pace myself, if I were you. From here on out, things only go from bad to worse.

Mace Malone: You make an excellent Judas, Mr. Bluestone.
Matt Bluestone: It's a gift.

Matt Bluestone: It's time we talk, Goliath - man to gargoyle.

  Cultural References
Mace Malone: The Illuminati will be pleased, Mr. Bluestone. You make an excellent Judas.

Judas Iscariot, in the New Testament, was the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ to the Sanhedrin. In the Gospel of John (see 12:6), Judas is portrayed as covetous and dishonest. According to the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, greed made him betray Jesus to the chief priest for 30 pieces of silver. What Mace means is that Matt did a good job betraying Goliath by pretending to be his friend.

 Law of Fives

The number 23 on Mace's key is a very subtle and intelligent reference to the "Law of Fives," one of the oldest Erisian Mysterees. It states that "all things happen in Fives, or are divisible by or are multiples of Five, or are somehow directly or indirectly appropriate to 5." It also recognizes the holy 23 (2+3=5). In the conspiracy theory mythology, the 23 is a number of considerable significance in relation to Illuminati-style secret organizations. Further Reading

Interesting to note that Matt's key number is 13 (5+5+13=23); Elisa and Matt work in the 23rd precinct; and this episode is the 36th according to the production codes, which means that it's the 23rd of season two (36 minus the 13 episodes of season one).

Adam Weishaupt was a Bavarian Illuminati who, on 1st May 1776, with the financial support of the House of Rothschild, founded a German expression of Illuminism. Weishaupt produced the "Law of Fives," an inner council. He taught that everything occurred in fives. Human history, he believed, came in a cycle of five stages: (1) Chaos (2) Dicord, (3) Confusion, (4) Bureaucracy and (5) Aftermath, where society implodes and reverts to chaos. Magic and nature now rule again, and the cycle is in preparation to begin again. Hence the Scottish Rite 32° motto: "Order from Chaos." Further Reading

  Analysis
Hotel Cabal

'Cabal' means "conspiratorial group of plotters or intriguers," and "secret scheme or plot" which is a very appropriate name for a Hotel owned by the Conspiracy Society.
