Goliath, Elisa, Bronx, and Tom have just arrived on the shores of Avalon . . . but before they even get off the beach, the Archmage attacks (as the beach), thoroughly angry that the Avalon Clan has wasted time looking for help instead of simply leaving the island. More powerful than Goliath has ever seen him, the Archmage gives the final ultimatum that they'll all die by sunset.

As Goliath and the rest head back to Oberon's Palace, the Archmage talks to his soldiers on what the next phase of his hostile take over shall be. While both good and evil consider their options, the audience learns just how the Archmage survived that fall from his cavern back in 975 AD . . . and what he plans on doing now . . . .

Episode Notes

Greg Weisman has revealed that besides Gabriel, there are other Gargoyles from the Avalon Clan named after the Archangels of Judeo-Christian lore: Michael, Raphael, and Uriel.

Greg Weisman has stated that Gabriel is the biological son of Othello (Coldstone) and Desdemona (Coldfire).

According to the Weird Sisters, the "Oberon's Law" forbids the Children of Oberon from directly interfering in human events. Greg Weisman has claimed that the law is enforced by magic, which means that it actually prevents a Fay from using his or her powers to meddle in the lives of mortals. However, as Archmage stressed out, the law can be bent, and some Children of Oberon like the Weird Sisters, the Banshee, Grandmother, Raven, Puck, and Oberon himself will prove this to be right.

We finally find out why the Weird Sisters made Demona and MacBeth work together (cf. "City of Stone, Part Three") and stole the talismans (cf. "High Noon").

Elisa notices that Angela looks like Demona. This fact will bear some importance in future episodes.

According to Greg Weisman's 249 paged timeline of Gargoyles Canon, Angela and her rookery brothers and sisters were born on the mystical island of Avalon in 1058 AD.

The fact that they lived on an island where every hour marks a day's passage in the real world made the sixty-some years fly by.

According to Greg Weisman, Goliath, Elisa, and Bronx arrived on the shores of Avalon December 28, 1995.

Episode Quotes

Elisa: I know this isn't the time, but I can't help noticing that Angela sort of looks like Demona, except her coloring's different. Whose daughter is she?
Goliath: Daughters and sons belong to the whole clan, Elisa. It is the gargoyle way.

Goliath: You've given them names?
Angela: Of course. How else could we tell each other apart?

Archmage: Don't crow too loudly. After all, what have you achieved – you beat up a beach!

Phoebe: Oberon will not be pleased.
Selene: He entrusted us to guard the gates of Avalon.
Luna: And now we are banished from that fair isle by a magician's parlor tricks.
Archmage: Might I suggest an alliance?
Selene: We make no pacts with sorcerers.
Archmage: Not even if I can promise you revenge against these mortals?
Phoebe: We are listening.
Archmage: It will take some time.
Luna: What is time to an immortal?
Archmage: Then I will see you again in twenty-five years. And soon, we will all have our vengeance.

Luna: What of the sleeping king?
Young Archmage: You mean he really exists? I'd heard the legends but never dreamed they were true.
Selene: All things are true. The king is on the island asleep in his hollow hill.

Guaridan: Let's get back to the Palace before the very air attacks us!

Cultural References

Gabriel

Gabriel is named after one of the four great Archangels of Judeo-Christian lore, the other three being Michael, Raphael, and Uriel. He appears both in the Bible as the divine messenger who delivered the Annunciation to Mary (Luke 1: 26-38) and in Milton's Paradise Lost as the leader of the angels guarding the Garden of Eden, just like Gabriel is the leader of the Avalon's Clan.

Analysis

Gargoyles and Names

Goliath is surprised that the Avalon clan has been given names, because back in 994 A.D. he was the only one with a name. Also, Brooklyn explained to young Tom that they could tell each other apart because they are different from each other, and would address to each other as 'friend.' Hudson also criticized the fact that humans name everything, thereby limiting it. Angela's reaction towards Goliath astonishment is a fruit of her being brought up by humans, and how differently her perspective of things are.

 The Weird Sisters, Part Three

The Weird Sisters are portrayed as vengeful beings is this episode which also equates them with the Furies or Erinyes of Greek mythology, another set of three women, the spirits of vengeance who chased great criminals.

The Archmage's Revenge:

The Archmage chose Demona as one of his soldiers because he felt betrayed by her when she "lost" the Phoenix Gate during the episode "Vows."

But why did he choose Macbeth? According to Greg Weisman, the Archmage was so proud of himself, he simply accepted what his future self had done previously -- a working Paradox.

However, it can also be thought that he chose Macbeth to torture someone from Prince Malcom's (Princess Katherine's father) royal family . . . who he also felt deserved vengeance.
