The world travelers have arrived on a mystical island no one can find once again . . . except that it's not Avalon.

As it turns out, there's more than one invisible island in the world -- one with plenty of islanders that don't wish to be found by the outside world. In short, the world travelers have landed on New Olympus, and island metropolis inhabited by the descendants of the mythical creatures.

The inhabitants fully welcome the world travelers . . . with the exception of Elisa. In an ironic turn of events, it is now a human who is out-casted . . . and now the New Olympians are at an uproar on what to do next: Do they allow the human to leave and potentially reveal their secret location . . . or do they lock her up forever, ensuring their island's survival?

Episode Notes

Avalon World Tour: New Olympus, disclosed location. The World Travelers arrived on May 22, 1996.

Greg Weisman stated that he took inspiration to create the New Olympians from Jack Kirby's comic-book creations, particularly the New Gods (DC Comics), the Eternals and the Inhumans (Marvel Comics).

Greg Weisman revealed that the New Olympians are a hybrid race descendant from both Oberon's Children and humans.

Greg Weisman disclosed that Ekidna is a descendant of Echidna of mythology.

Greg Weisman had planned a spin-off about the New Olympians where they arrived outside the United Nations Building in New York. It would have featured old and new characters such as Terry Chung, Sphinx, Talos and Taurus, Proteus, Boreas (and his two sons), Helios, Jove, Ekidna, and Medusa. Three factions would have formed among the New Olympians: one which wished to co-exist with the humans, one which wished to remain isolated from them (of which Ekidna would have been the leader, or at least a prominent member), and one which wanted the humans to worship them again, as they had done in the classical world (of which Helios and Jove would have been part of).

Episode Quotes

Ekidna: All humans are guilty. Thousands of years ago Olympians walked among humans, but because of the way we looked we were shunned, hunted.

Helios: You had to attack me to tell me that?
Elisa: Would you have listened if I just called you over?
Helios: Frankly, no!

Taurus: You are definitely not like the humans of legend.
Elisa: I'll choose to take that as a compliment.

Taurus: She was the first human to visit New Olympus in two thousand years. But she probably won't be the last. We're not going to be able to hide forever.
Boreas: Yes. The time may soon come when the world will have to face the New Olympians.

Cultural References

Taurus: You are a human and you are trespassing on New Olympus.

In Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was believed to be the home of the gods, built by Hephaestus. The access to Olympus was protected by the goddesses known as the Seasons. Zeus had his throne on Olympus where the gods feasted on nectar and ambrosia while the Muses sang to them. In reality, Mount Olympus is a 2,917 m (9,570 ft) high mountain in northern Greece, the highest point in Greece, on the boundary between Thessaly and Macedonia, near the Aegean Sea.

Boreas: I am Boreas, leader of the New Olympians. We know of your noble race, gargoyles.

Boreas, in Greek mythology, was the god of the north wind. He had two sons, Calais and Zetes, who served on the Argo during Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece. Calais and Zetes both had wings, which may have inspired the wings of the New Olympian.

Taurus: My ancestor, the Minotaur, was locked in a labyrinth by humans, starved, and then killed by a human hero. I believe that humans are dangerous.

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man that was confined in the labyrinth of Minos, King of Crete. The Minotaur was the offspring of Pasiphaë, wife of Minos, and a snow-white bull that the god Poseidon had sent to the king. Overwhelmed by its beauty, Minos refused to sacrifice the bull, which enraged Poseidon who in turn made Pasiphaë falling in love with the bull. After Pasiphaë gave birth to the Minotaur, Minos ordered the construction of a complex labyrinth impossible to escape from. Every year, Minos sent seven young girls and seven young boys for the Minotaur to feed on. This lasted until the Greek hero Theseus offered himself as one of the victims, with the intention of bring an end to these cruelties. Theseus killed the Minotaur while he was sleeping and led the young sacrifices to freedom.

Ekidna

In Greek mythology, Echidna was nymph from the waist up and a speckled snake from the waist down. She lived in a cave and only came out to eat those passing by. She was the mother of nearly all the monsters of Greek mythology (incl. Chimera, Cerberus, the Nemean Lion, the Sphinx, Orthrus, and the Lernean Hydra). She was ageless, but not immortal. Echidna was killed by the hundred-eyed giant, Argus Panoptes, during her sleep.

Taurus: Proteus. He is not like other New Olympians. He is evil.

In Greek mythology, Proteus was son of Poseidon and the keeper of his seals. He was also a prophet and a shape-shifter. Each day at noon Proteus slept in the shade of the rocks on the island of Pharos in Egypt. If someone wished to know the future, Proteus had to be caught and restrained. He would then assume terrible shapes, in order to avoid prophesizing. But if none of those worked, Proteus was compelled to assume his real shape and tell the truth.

Taurus: And, Helios, you keep a check on the pyrotechnics or you're out of a job.

Helios, in Greek mythology, was the ancient sun god, son of the Titans Hyperion and Thea, and brother of Selene, goddess of the moon, and Eos, goddess of the dawn. Helios was rode his golden chariot across the heavens providing light to every being. His main cult took place at Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was a representation of Helios.

Proteus: Any sign of the human, Talos?

In Greek mythology, Talos was a giant man of bronze, built to guard the island of Crete from invaders. He would throw stones at fleeting ships and sink them, or burn the invading soldiers to death. Medea, a sorceress, the daughter of Aeëtes, killed him by draining the liquid brass that served as blood for him.
