Garrow loses his first case to his nemesis, Silvester. Lady Sarah Hill is impressed by him though and asks him to defend a serving girl accused of murdering her baby.
Garrow manages to defend a coachman accused of stealing a harness by his master. Renwick Williams is is arrested after being accused of murdering several young women in London and he is sent to Newgate Prison. After Southgate talks the man's mother he tries to convince Garrow to defend the man in court. Garrow and Lady Sarah grow closer.
Garrow manages to defend Edgar Cole who is accused of raping one of his servents. Garrow ends up challenging Silvester to a dual after he offends him. After Garrow fires his shot into the ground, Silvester shoots him in the arm to teach him a lesson. When Sarah finds out what has happened she ends up telling Garrow how she really feels about him and they share a kiss. Sarah insists that nothing else can ever happen between them. Garrow defends Tom and Phoebe in court who are accused of stealing and murder. They where carrying out the orders set them by Edward Forrester who is an old nemesis of Garrow. When the shopkeeper's grandson tried to catch them he was killed by Forrester and Phoebe and Tom where accused of the crime. Southgate decides that he can no longer work with Garrow.
William Garrow is congratulated by Sir Arthur after he successfully defends a prostitute accused of murdering a client. He also lets Garrow know that his wife is going to have a baby. Garrow tries unsuccessfully to get Sarah to leave her husband. Mary Hamer wants Southhouse to get Garrow to help her husband who has been in jail for several months and not charged. After Mary is arrested Southgate and Garrow set their differences aside and become involved in the case.
Garrow is asked to prosecute the captain of a slave ship but he is concerned that his clients are more concerned with money than seeing justice. A former prisoner's testimony though persuades him to investigate the case further. Sir Arthur becomes convinced that Lady Sarah has committed adultery with Garrow and becomes determined to ruin both of them.
Garrow attempts to defend a man who is accused of sodomy which is a capital offence. Taking on the case he risks gossip and humiliation. He also has to deal with the sexual scandal who has been accused of with Lady Sarah.
Garrow finds out that British sailors who have been wounded in action are returning home and are being treated with contempt and abuse. When a man attempts to expose the corruption at Greenwich Hospital he ends up finding himself is jailed. Garrow is accused by Southgate of mixed motives after he uses the case to have a pop at the establishment and Sir Arthur Hill.
Garrow finds himself in the dock when he is accused of the crime of adultery. The evidence against him is a mixture of innuendo, invention and lies. There is a moralistic judge in charge of the case though, so the truth may not be enough as a defense.
William ends up risking his reputation as he returns to the Bailey to defend James Hadfield, who is on trial for high treason for trying to eliminate King George III. He continues to enjoy an "irregular" relationship with Lady Sarah Hill and finds himself ostracised and impoverished. Separated from her husband, Sarah learns from Southouse that she has no independent rights of her own.
Spitalfield silk-weavers, Quinn and Foley, find themselves being accused of destroying silk looms in an act of industrial sabotage. Garrow has to try and convince a sceptical jury of their innocence. After one of the defendants turns Kings Evidence against his friend, loyalty ends up competing with fear and death. John Southouse is furious about Lady Sarah’s efforts to get custody of Samuel.
General Thomas Picton, Governor of Trinidad, finds himself in the dock accused of the brutal torture of a16-year-old woman. Garrow sees the chance to expose him and the colonial system. Lord Melville approaches Garrow a proposition. If Garrow will agree to limit his prosecution, Melville will use his influence to make sure that Hill gives Sarah her son back. Garrow finds himself with a really tough decision to make.
A vicious riot ends up breaking out on polling day in the Westminster constituency and an old man ends up being brutally clubbed to death. A black man called Nicholson ends up standing on trial for the man's murder. Garrow is upset after Sarah leaves him. George Pinnock shows up with news about the case and manages to get Garrow to denfend the man. After it is proved in court that Nicholson is completely innocent, Garrow jumps into action determined to uncover the truth.
