The year is 1966 and the football World Cup is being played in England. With Russia due to play at Roker Park tensions are running high. CND protesters, led by students from Durham University are the last thing the police need arriving in the area. Gently and Bacchus find themselves investigating the murder of left-wing academic Fraser Barratt who was discovered dead in the docks after a CND rally.

George and Bacchus investigate the suspicious death of one of Gently's ex-snouts called China. The Coroner's says that China was a drunk vagrant who died following a fall. After George talks to the nurse who looked after him before dying, he ends up getting a very different story.
