Episode Summary

After an assailant shoots through the rail, Max plunges into the water. Agent 99’s first task is to fish him out. Then they contact the Chief: they still haven’t discovered the plans for the Nuclear Amphibian Battleship. Worse, everyone on board makes the same strange clip-clop noise Max heard just after someone murdered his contact. His suspect might be Consuela, the Spanish dancer, or Baccardo the Portuguese polo player. He reveals his identity to Captain Groman, and then speaks to agent 44, but the killer shoots agent 44 before he can reveal what he has deduced about the plans. Max returns to the Captain’s cabin to ask for permission to use the ship’s radio, and when he does, he learns Captain Groman has a peg-leg, and makes a curious clip-clop as he walks...

Episode Quotes

Max: 99, I’m positive that this is the section of rail that gave way.
Agent 99: I’m sure you’re right, Max, but look: there’s not a sign of any damage!
Max: Yes, well just put two and two together and that means...
Agent 99: ... that someone fixed it quietly during the night.
Max: Or else the entire ship has been replaced!

The Chief: Are their any clues?
Max: No, Chief... just that clip-clop sound I was telling you about.
The Chief: Does anyone on board make that noise?
Max: Everyone on board makes that noise...

Max: Captain, I need your help. But first, I must reveal to you some information that is highly confidential.
Captain Groman: You may consider me the soul of discretion.
Max: My name is Maxwell Smart.
Captain Groman: I shall never breathe it to another living soul.

Captain Groman: Control? You work for Control?
Max: You’ve heard of it?
Captain Groman: No...

Captain Groman: Mister Smart, I can vouch for my crew. I know each man as though her were my own brother. Why, they’re the pick of the scum of Europe!

Captain Groman: My servant Ming can help us. Perhaps you’ve seen him.
Max: Oh yes, the big Chinese fellow.
Captain Groman: Chinese?!? Good heavens, of course!! He’s Chinese!! I wondered why he was so hard to understand. I thought he had a speech impediment.

Agent 44: A spy can only take so much! Tunnels and portholes and sleeping in the cargo hold. Hiding, always hiding... (he breaks down)
Agent 99: We understand how you feel, 44, honestly we do. But you’ve really got to try to get a grip on yourself!

Agent 44: He said that no one would ever know where the plans were hidden because they weren’t plans!

(About his wooden leg.)
Captain Groman: Ah, yes. A souvenir of my younger years when I was still a lad. You’ve heard of the great white whale?
Max: That was done by the great white whale?
Captain Groman: No, that was done by a small blue convertible.

Captain Groman: You fool! You’ve ruined my model!
Max: (examining the ship and its broken bottle) So that’s it. The nuclear amphibian battleship made into a model!

Max: Listen, Groman, if I don’t get off this ship alive, you’re in a lot of trouble. Of course, I’m in a lot of trouble too, but on the other hand...

Max: Listen, Groman, if I don’t get off this ship alive, you’re in a lot of trouble. Of course, I’m in a lot of trouble too, but on the other hand...

Agent 99: Max, it was Captain Groman!
Max: Yes. One of the most clever and ingenious villains I’ve ever encountered. It was he who stole the plans, killed our waterfront contact man, murdered Inspector Sehokian, almost fed me to the sharks, wounded agent 44, tried to shoot me with one leg and stab me with another. You know, it’s a shame 99. All this could have been avoided.
Agent 99: How?
Max: If only he had used his leg for good instead of evil.

The Chief: Max!! I don’t believe some of the things you do!

Episode Goofs

Over the course of the first battle, Max's unseen assailant shoots the deck rail several times. At various points in the scene, it goes from undamaged, to very damaged, back to undamaged, and finally to broken.

Cultural References

The great white whale to which Captain Groman refers could be Moby Dick, a subject of Herman Melville’s now famous 1851 novel Moby-Dick. Based on the whaling industry (including various apocrypha), Melville’s complex novel tells a story of obsession and loss and many other themes as well. It is a classic of American literature.

Episode References

Captain Groman tells Max that a small blue convertible cost him his leg and is the reason why he now must wear a prosthetic. In Isle of the Darned, Hans Hunter will attribute a scar over his eye to the same cause. Evidently, the worst drivers drive small blue convertibles!

Analysis

In this episode, the thief reduces the plans to a scale model. While an interesting approach, it seems impractical - the model could not reflect details such as the power plant, internal arrangement, and other data. Of course, it's possible that the hull design was the information of interest to the spies - hull designs affect ship's performance in many ways and are often military secrets.
