  Episode Summary
Japan is once again transfixed with the recent reemergence of the Laughing Man after a six-year absence. With so much to talk about and little facts to go on, virtual chat rooms are abuzz with gossip. In one particular chat room, several people have stepped forward to air their opinions. As they begin, another participant appears. Forming herself out of digital information, she takes a chair at the virtual round table and listens in on the intense discussion to figure out the Laughing Man's identity and the reason why he has returned to the forefront.

  Episode Notes
Japanese Title: 「ネットの闇に棲む男」 - 「Net no Yami ni Sumu Otoko」

Kanji in Lower Right Hand corner in the News Report about the Blackmailing of Sagawa Electronics:
緊急特別報道笑い男再び!! (Kinkyū Tokubetsu Hōdō: Warai Otoko Futatabi!!) -
Urgent Special Report: Laughing Man Returns!!

One of the companies that had the murder virus installed in its system is called Satsuma Meditech. The woman interviewing the "Laughing Man" says that Satsuma is "the most powerful corporation in Kyūshū". Satsuma, written in Japanese as 薩摩, is the old provincial name for the prefecture of Kagoshima, 鹿児島, which is the southernmost prefecture on the island of Kyūshū. The contemporary prefectural capital, also called Kagoshima, will be brought up in episode 18 - "LOST HERITAGE" and 2nd GIG episode 12 - "SELECON".

"[T]hat designer named Paul"
When taking a look at the old Laughing Man footage of Omba's, Guru Guru asks if anyone remembers that a designer named Paul turned himself into police because the Laughing Man logo was his creation. This is actually a reference to Paul Nicholson, the person who actually created the Laughing Man logo for the series. His name appears in the outro credits. He would also create the logo for 2nd GIG.

  Episode Quotes
(The Major is driving her car with Batou as her passenger)
Major: Huh? What did you say?
Batou: Don't tell me you've...been diving this whole time. (Grabs car's support bar) Damn, you're nuts.

  Episode Goofs
Japanese Name Mispronounced:
Tina Carlisi, the English voice artists for Kanabi, mispronounces the word Satsuba the first time she says it, pausing on the first syllable and making the 'sa' sound like the 'ba' in 'bat'. The first 'a' should be pronounced short and all three syllables should be stressed equally. She, and Guru Guru, pronounce the word correctly moments later.

Credits Error:
Bandai Entertainment incorrectly spells Kyouko Hikami's given name as Kyoto Hikami.

  Cultural References
Chatter: J.D. Salinger
The handle taken by the one of the members at the discussion table is J.D., in homage to J.D. Salinger, the writer of The Catcher in the Rye. The author's initials stand for Jerome David.

Chroma: "VIRUS>IMMUNE"
Motoko's use of her alias "Chroma" is a direct reference to Shirō Masamune's 2001 manga Ghost in the Shell: Man-Machine Interface. Appearing in Chapter 4, "VIRUS>IMMUNE", Chroma even strikes a pose similar to the picture on the DVD case, and T-Shirt for the Special Edition, for Volume 3 of the first season of Stand Alone Complex.
