After watching the series, this episode makes more sense. The seeds of what will happen in "ENDLESS∞GIG" are planted here. Still, it's something similar to what is used in another anime; "Serial Experiments: Lain".
Actually, some of the throwaway lines from the tachikoma's chat session is pretty funny. At one point, one of the tachikoma refer to the Major as 'god' -- the way he said it was funny ^o^ |

I have to classify this one as a be patient with the series episode. As for the showing itself the payoff doesn't come until the end. First we get a glimpse into percieved "friendly" Japan after being ravaged by war. Killing a goverment worker for not cooperating wheather he was successful in his intentions or not. Then we have the telling admission of the Major and how she see's herself, like the scientist a slave to the goverment via her cybornetic upgrades. Finally the Tachikomas and the satellite which as you said is more relevant at the end of the series. Another break from the main storyline and an oppurtunity to build atmosphere for the series good job. |

The Major seeing herself that way is a lot like the 1995 movie when she says that if Batou and she were to give up their cybernetic bodies if they left Section 9, "there wouldn't be much left after that." The Major only has parts of her brain and spinal column left of her. In the GitS: SAC novel that just came out, Junichi Fujisaku writes that even the Major's brain had to be cyberised in places. Going back to "affection", it's amazing that she was able to survive the plane crash at all. Of course, it may be that being almost wholly cyberised is what makes the Major so damn skilled. She retains her ghost, but she's so machine it's crazy. |
