Christopher convinces Lorelai to accompany him to Parents' Day at Yale to visit Rory, and Lorelai is surprised to find that Emily and Richard are there as well. At Yale, Christopher tries prove himself as a "cool dad" by inviting the Yale Daily News staff to an expensive lunch. However, all of Rory's co-workers drink too much, resulting in a bad situation when Rory gets wind of a breaking story and the staff has to leave. Meanwhile, Luke takes April to her swim team practice where the coach insists that Luke takes adult swim classes. During the lesson, the coach flirts with Luke and the two end up going on a date.

Episode Quotes

(Lorelai speaks in an on and off French accent)
Lorelai: I was born in Marseilles, and my parents were killed in a très tragique accident. And so I was sent to the states and adopted by the evil Gilmores who refused to let me speak French, but I never forgot the accent of my mother country.
Christopher: That's a complicated back-story
Lorelai: I led a complicated life.

Christopher: Somebody gets a lot of mail.
Lorelai: Yeah. Well, I’m a popular gal. Also my system is I only open my mail once a month.
Christopher: You’re system is to open your mail once a month?
Lorelai: Twelve times a year. You know if you open your mail more than that, you get a lot of mattress fliers and bills and another bill. This way I open it once a month and I get letters from people who still write letters and shampoo samples and fun stuff. It’s fun.

Lorelai: You know, I’ve always loved the word "provost", though I don't know who or what a provost is. It just sounds so --
Christopher: Idyllic and collegiate??
Lorelai: Or like something from a deli counter. "Extra provost on that please".

Cultural References

Kirk: So what do you say Luke? You wanna be my wingman? Goose to my Maverick?

In the 1986 film Top Gun, Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise starred as pilots nicknamed Goose and Maverick, respectively.

Rory: When did you start saying things like "to die for"?
Lorelai: Since he started watching Project Runway.
Christopher: Make it work!

In the Bravo reality show Project Runway, fashion designer contestants compete on weekly design challenges. The show co-host, Tim Gunn, often uses the phrases "make it work" and "to die for".
