Rory is in class at Chilton when she’s informed that there’s been a mistake and she has to leave. She walks out of the classroom and into the front door of her home. Lorelai comes down the stairs and tells her that she’s leaving for Hawaii and doesn’t have time to talk. Lorelai runs out the door and Rory walks into the kitchen. There she finds Paris and Doyle eating breakfast with their two kids. Paris asks Rory why she’s here, and Doyle, thinking she needs money, hands her some cash. Paris hands Rory a long stick and a trash bag and tells her she better get to work. Rory jolts awake from her nightmare.
During Friday Night Dinner at Emily and Richard’s, Rory tells everyone that she was turned down for the New York Times internship. She tries to tell everyone that she’s fine with it, but her grandparents and Lorelai both know she’s lying. Rory asks if they can eat dinner sooner than normal so she can get back to Yale to study for her finals.
The next morning, Lorelai heads to Luke’s for breakfast. She runs into Miss Patty and Babette who tell her about their upcoming gig during karaoke night. Up at the counter, Lorelai and Luke talk about Luke’s boat trip with April. Lorelai tells him that he needs to plan some nights in a hotel for April and gives him suggestions of places to eat along the Maine coast. For the advice, Luke gives Lorelai free coffee and donuts.
At Yale, Rory heads back to her apartment and finds that Paris is having a party with other Yale students who were accepted to Harvard Medical School. They’re celebrating by eating a cake shaped like a man’s corpse. Paris tells Rory how she invited them over so she can get inside information on them before their years at Harvard Medical School. Paris invites Rory to stay, but Rory passes and heads to her room to open her mail. She finds that the Chicago Sun-Times rejected her as well, and decides to call the newspaper she originally turned down, but they have already filled their vacancy.
Lane is at home and thrilled that she was able to get both of the twin boys to go to sleep at the same time. Zach comes home and tells Lane his good news – he was offered a position as lead drummer for Vapor Rub. He tells her how it’s okay with the band if Lane and the boys come with on the band’s two month tour. Lane is thrilled with the news, but stays quiet so they don’t wake up the boys.
Rory comes home to Stars Hollow and begins panicking about her future. Lorelai comes home to find Rory in bed and they talk about Rory’s future. Lorelai assures her that she’ll find a great job and she doesn’t need to worry as much as she is right now.
Back at Lane’s, Lane and Brian are caring for the twins who are both crying at the same time. During the hassle of getting them both to stop crying, Lane realizes that a two month tour may not be as great as she had thought.
Lorelai and Rory head to Luke’s for lunch. They talk about famous people who had to struggle before they made it. While they talk, Rory begins to not worry about her future as she was before. To relax a little more, Lorelai suggests that they go to karaoke night to watch Babette and Miss Patty perform. Rory gets a call from Logan and goes outside to talk to him. While Rory’s outside, Luke comes over to talk to Lorelai and make sure that Rory is okay. Lorelai tells him that she and Rory are going to karaoke night, and Luke mistakes it for an invite and tells her he's busy. Lorelai tells him that she wasn’t inviting him and their conversation turns awkward. On the phone, Logan tells Rory how well his interviews are going in San Francisco and assures her that things will turn around for her as well.
As Lorelai and Rory leave the diner, Luke gets a call from April. She tells him that she has both good news and bad news – she was accepted to a prestigious 6 week summer camp so she won’t be able to go on the boat trip. Luke tells her that she should go to the camp, then hangs up, obviously crushed.
At karaoke night, Babette and Miss Patty are doing their show. Rory pressures Lorelai into singing a song. Lorelai says she’d have to be really drunk to do so, so Rory orders some shots. Back at the diner, Zach and Lane invite Luke to go to karaoke night with them. Luke says he might catch up with them later. Zach and Lane leave, and Lane breaks the news to Zach that she doesn’t think she and the boys should go on tour with Zach and Vapor Rub. Zach tells her he understands and offers to call the band and tell them he can’t take the position, but Lane tells him it’s only a few months and they can make it. At the bar, Kirk does some karaoke as Lane and Rory catch up. Lorelai decides to take the stage and sings Whitney Houston’s "I Will Always Love You". As she sings, Luke walks into the bar and when Lorelai sees him she begins to get noticeably nervous. Luke smiles as Lorelai stares at him and sings.
Rory heads back to Yale to take her last final. After she leaves, Logan comes by the house to talk to Lorelai. He tells her about the job he’s been offered in Palo Alto and how he’s going to have to move to California and wants Rory to move with him. Lorelai is shocked and speechless. Logan continues talking and tells her that he doesn’t want to move out there with Rory just as his girlfriend – he asks Lorelai her permission to ask Rory to marry him. Lorelai sits speechless. “Lorelai? Lorelai?”, Logan says.
