Rory is eating whipped cream from the can as Lorelai paints Rory's toenails. Rory asks why Lorelai is insisting on painting her toes. Lorelai explains that Rory is starting private school and that "everyone knows that private-school girls are bad. And bad girls wear red nail polish." Lane runs up carrying the new XTC album, Apple Venus Volume 2. Lorelai jumps up and runs into the house with Lane. Rory complains about her half-finished paint job while Lane and Lorelai are dancing on the other side of the window.
Rory busts into Lorelai's bedroom and tells her that it's 7:10. Lorelai says that it can't be 7:10 because she set the clock for 5:45. Rory holds up the clock and shows the time. Lorelai curses and gets out of bed. Rory keeps yelling at Lorelai for oversleeping while Lorelai tells her she had all sorts of plans to get up early and get coffee and pick up her clothes at the dry cleaners. As Lorelai runs around complaining that her clothes are all gone, Rory begins announcing the time. "7:15, 7:16." Lorelai calls Rory "Time Lady" and tells her to go warm up the car. Lorelai runs wearing a pink tie-dyed top and cut-off denim shorts. She grabs her coat, turns around and asks Rory, "What?" "Nothing. I just didn't know the rodeo was in town." Lorelai leaves, threatening to take Rory's baby picture with her to the school. Rory runs after her apologizing, saying that she loves the rodeo.
Lorelai and Rory drive through town in their Jeep. The music is playing so you can’t hear Lorelai talk while Rory stares out the window at her old school. At Chilton, Rory and Lorelai sit in the front seat of the Jeep, looking up at the school. Rory says that she remembers it being smaller and less ‘off with their heads.' Lorelai leans her head to the side and Rory asks her what she's looking at. "I'm just trying to see if there's a hunchback up in that tower." Lorelai tells Rory that she loves her and she'll pick her up after school. Rory tells Lorelai that she has to go in and meet the headmaster because that's what all of the mothers do. Lorelai gets out of the Jeep, and the Chilton mothers whisper to each other and stare. Lorelai puts on her coat. As they look for the right building, they are stopped by a man who tells them that they are standing in front of it. He introduces himself as Ian Jack and that his daughter, Julia, goes to school here. Lorelai introduces herself. Rory says they have to go, and Lorelai starts to leave. She tells Ian where she works. As Rory and Lorelai walk into Chilton they pass three schoolgirls who all stop walking to turn around and stare at Rory until the bell rings and they walk off.
Lorelai and Rory walk up to the Headmaster's assistant and Lorelai tells her about Rory and how she got her name, then continues to talk until Rory elbows her and asks for the Headmaster.
Headmaster Charleston introduces himself at his doorway. Lorelai looks around and sees Emily waiting inside the Headmaster’s office. Emily stands up and says she came to wish her granddaughter luck on her first day of school and how she and the Headmaster are old friends. The Headmaster asks Lorelai to take off her coat and have a seat. She says she's fine but Emily tells her to take off her coat and sit down so the headmaster doesn't think she's rude. Lorelai takes off her coat. Everyone looks awkwardly at Lorelai’s outfit until Lorelai tells them it’s laundry day. Emily says goodbye to the headmaster, wishes Rory good luck on her first day, and asks Lorelai if she needs a ride or if her horse is parked outside"
Emily and Lorelai argue back and forth as they walk out of the school. Emily says she came to Chilton to put in a good word for Rory. Lorelai apologizes and says she was just surprised to see her. As Emily turns to leave, she shouts over her shoulder, "Dinner. Friday night. No spurs, please."
Headmaster Charleston looks through Rory’s files. He asks about her aspirations and she tells him how she wants to travel and major in Journalism and Political Science. After a short discussion Rory takes her portfolio to the registration office. The portfolio is picked up by a student aide and handed out the window to the waiting girls in the bushes. They read her transcripts and Paris wonders why the school is letting new kids in. It's just ruining the grade curve. Rory is gets her paperwork, a locker, a schedule, and the words to the school song.
At Luke’s, Lorelai complains that she's had the longest day of her life and it's only ten in the morning. She tells Luke that Rory started Chilton and he asks her why she'd that outfit to take Rory to Chilton. She says the fuzzy clock didn't purr on time.
Lorelai gets out of her Jeep, struggles with her laundry, coat, and coffee, and hears the phone ringing inside. It's Emily and she wants to buy some Chilton clothes, like the school sweater, book bag, and coat. Lorelai says that Rory will be fine without the extra clothes. They fight about the clothes and Lorelai finally tells Emily that a coat in a size six would be fine and hangs up.
Back at Chilton, the instructor is going through his lecture. Paris answers every single question as they discuss Tolstoy and Dickens. Tristan walks in with a late pass. He sits in the back and asks a friend who Rory is. Once he finds out she’s a new student they begin to call her Mary. The instructor calls Rory to the front of the class and hands her a giant binder full of materials from the last week. He says that there's a test the next day but since she's new she can take a make-up exam on Monday. As Rory walks into the hallway, Paris introduces herself and asks Rory if she’s going out for the school newspaper. Paris then tells her that she runs the school so don’t mess with her.
At the Inn, Sookie goes through a peach-testing process as Jackson, tells her that they’re fine. Lorelai shows up and tells them about her day and how she had to wear the rodeo outfit to Chilton. Later, Ian stops by to meet a business partner at the inn for lunch and to ask Lorelai out. She says no because he's a Chilton dad and doesn't want anything to go wrong for Rory when she's first starting out. He leaves her his car and says he’ll try again after he gets back from China.
Rory struggles with her new locker, which won't open. She yanks it open and falls backwards into Paris, who drops her project onto the floor, breaking it into a thousand pieces. Rory apologizes and says it was an accident while Paris picks up the pieces. Rory walks into her next class, which is the same class that Paris has. The instructor asks Paris for her project. Paris stands up and says she doesn't have it. The teacher asks if she had enough time to prepare for the project. Rory tries to take the blame for the project but Paris tells her to stay out of it. The teacher gives Paris an extra day for the project and introduces Rory to the class.
Lorelai goes into Luke’s he asks her what she’s doing there. Lorelai recaps her day for him, including the dad asking her out. Luke tells her that he’s glad she’s not going. They flirt off and on until Lorelai’s cell phone rings and she leaves to answer it.
At Lorelai’s, Kirk is installing a DSL that Emily ordered for her. She tells him that she doesn’t need a DSL. Later, Lorelai walks into a salon, goes over to Emily, and knocks on her hair dryer. She tells Emily that she cancelled the DSL order and that she’ll buy everything for Rory and she doesn’t need Emily’s help.
Lorelai drives to Chilton to pick Rory from school. Rory drops her bags and hugs Lorelai. They tell each other how much their days sucked. Rory tells her that the other students kept calling her Mary. Lorelai says it means like Virgin Mary, "Means they think you look like a goodie-goodie." Rory asks what if she looked like a slut? If Lorelai tells her “they would have added a "Magdeline" to it.” Rory says the Biblical insults prove this is a smart school.
Lorelai, Rory, and Lane walk down the street discussing school without Rory. Lorelai says that on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they could hang out in Hartford when she's in town for her business class. Lane says she's late for dinner and gives Rory her ‘cool’ clothes and hair accessories. Rory says she wishes she knew how to get Paris off her back. Lorelai says she knew a Paris once. Rory asks how she took care of her. "I got pregnant and dropped out." As they walk by the diner, Lorelai asks Rory if she thinks Luke is cute. Rory says Lorelai can't date him because they'll break up and they'll never be able to eat there again. As they walk off into the distance, Luke walks out of the diner and watches the girls then changes his “open” sign to “closed.”
