Episode Summary

With graduation approaching, Rory is happily looking forward to attending the Stars Hollow High School prom with Jess, but he gets some surprising news from Principal Merten. Lane's band makes its debut at a big party, but the evening ends on an ugly note when the long-standing animosity between Jess and Dean finally erupts into a fist fight. Meanwhile, Lorelai gets roped into serving on the parents' committee for the Chilton graduation party, putting her back in contact with a very uncomfortable Max Medina.

Episode Quotes

Dave: What we need is a name.
Brian: I made my suggestion.
Zach: Yeah, and we vetoed "The Harry Potters". Next.
Brian: So yours is better?
Zach: "Follow Them to the Edge of the Desert" is memorable and classy.
Brian: I run out of breath every time I say it.
Zach: You've got asthma, dude. You run out of breath saying your name.
Dave: Yeah, Brian, we can't work our name around your respiratory illnesses.
Brian: Even without an inhaler, "Follow Them to the Edge of the Desert" is too long.
Zach: Yeah, but when we get famous, our fans will shorten it to F-T-T-T-E-O-T-D.

Lorelai: Why did you treat me so weird at the last meeting?
Max: I treated you with respect and kindness.
Lorelai: That's why it was weird. It's how you treated Terry and Joan too. I mean, did you also kiss Terry and Joan?
Max: Yeah, I did and Doug too. He was the best of the 3.

Max: Wait ... wait ... wait. 10 feet.
Lorelai: 10 feet?
Max: That's a safe distance for us. And the more furniture in between the better.
Lorelai: Do you think I'm gonna attack you?
Max: I'm not worried about you, I'm worried about me.

Lorelai: No, Luke, thanks for doing this. It's exactly what the contractor said. We just wanted a guy with a good butt's opinion.
Sookie: Yeah, Tom has a terrible butt.
Luke: Please stop that.

Cultural References

Lorelai: It was not an illusion, Doug Henning.

Doug Henning was a popular magician who performed his illusions and tricks across the country.

Rory: The Gilmore house is partying like it's 1999.
Lorelai: And here, it's at home with The 700 Club.

Rory's line refers to a line from the Prince song "1999". Lorelai is referring to The 700 Club, a conservative Christian talk show on ABC Family.
