This is the last appearance of Marion Ross as Lorelai 'Trix' Gilmore. However, Ross will continue to guest star on the show as cousin Marilyn.

This is the first episode in which there is no direct, face-to-face communication between Lorelai and Rory. They speak via cell phones, but don't talk in person.

Lorelai: Hi, Rory, it's me. How's school? You learning stuff? Listen, we have the horses, Desdemona and Cletus, and the first two rides have to be me and you. And hopefully, you're over the time that I took you for the pony ride, and the pony was old and just sort of stopped and laid down, and you sort of rolled off into the ditch. It's really not likely to happen again. I promise.

Lorelai: You're hiding from my grandmother, aren't you?
Jason: She is scarier than Nick Nolte's mug shot.

Lorelai: Sorry for making you get all dressed up.
Luke: That's okay, it's good for me to do once in a while. It reminds me why I'm not an accountant.

Richard: (turns and sees Lorelai) Lorelai, have you been there the whole time?
Lorelai: Yes, I have.
Richard: Well, I didn't see you.
Lorelai: Well, I had my cloaking device activated, so . . .

Episode Title: The Incredible Shrinking Lorelais

The episode title is a possible reference to the 1957 film, The Incredible Shrinking Man or to the 1979 Dickies album, Incredible Shrinking Dickies.

Paris: Gandalf the Grey is still falling down it.

Gandalf the Grey is a character from the Lord of the Rings series who dies when he falls down a canon in the Dwarf Mountains.

Jason: She is scarier than Nick Nolte's mug shot.

Actor, director, and model Nick Nolte was pulled over in Malibu, California while driving drunk and his mug shot, as seen here, quickly became an infamous picture of Nolte.

Richard: Well, I didn't see you.
Lorelai: Well, I had my cloaking device activated, so . . .

In Star Trek, cloaking devices were systems that made it hard for sensors to detect objects or by making these objects virtually invisible.

Lorelai: Maybe we have to drop one of the horses
Sookie: Who's making that choice, Sophie?
