When Rory gets accepted into Chilton, Lorelai has to deal with the fact that she can not afford the school and must go to her parents for help. Her parents, Emily and Richard, help her out by providing a loan to pay for the school, but in return ask that her and Rory must attend dinner every Friday night at their house.

During her last couple of days at Stars Hollow High, Rory meets a new transfer student, Dean, and begins to reconsider her transfer to Chilton. When Lorelai sees that Rory is thinking of giving up her future for a boy, she becomes angered and they engage in their first fight ever.

It is the first day of Chilton for the Gilmores, and Lorelai oversleeps. Realizing that she does not have enough time to pick up her clothes from the dry-cleaners, she is forced to wear a pink tie-dye shirt and "Daisy Duke" shorts, an outfit that upsets both Emily and Rory. The rest of the day is downhill from there for Rory, who picks up the nickname Mary and makes enemies with Paris Geller who sees Rory as her competition.

Rory joins Richard for a round of golf at the club, finding that she enjoys spending time with her grandfather. When Rory returns from her day at the club, Lorelai is not to happy about the fact that Rory may want to be a part of the world she ran away from, resulting in her picking a fight with Rory. Meanwhile, Lorelai helps plan a wedding for a set of twin girls who are marrying a set of twin boys.

At school, Rory receives her first D ever, leading her to study like crazy for the upcoming exam. After she and Lorelai spend all night reviewing Shakespeare, they oversleep. To make matters worse, on her way to school Rory hits a deer which further delays her arrival to Chilton. When she finally makes it to school, she is denied from taking the test and does not handle it well. Lorelai is called in, and tells off the headmaster and Mr. Medina.



5 :01x05 - Cinnamon's Wake

At the Chilton bake sale, Lorelai runs into Mr. Medina and agrees to have coffee with him. When they get together, he insists that they should date, and Lorelai agrees to go to dinner with him. But when Lorelai receives a call from Rory saying that their neighbor's cat, Cinnamon, had died, their date slips her mind as she helps prepare for the wake. During the wake, Rory walks outside to see none other than Mr. Medina outside on her porch, waiting for Lorelai. Later at the wake, Rory has an awkward encounter with Dean who admits his feelings for her.

It is Rory's 16th birthday and both Lorelai and Emily have planned parties for Rory. At Emily's, all of Rory's classmates are invited leading Rory to have her first fight with Emily. The following day, Lorelai throws Rory another bash and Emily and Richard decide to attend hoping to reconcile with Rory. However, while at the party, both Emily and Richard realize how different Rory and Lorelai's lives are from their own. Later, Dean comes by once everyone has left to give Rory a bracelet he had made for her. As they hold hands in the yard, Lorelai oversees.

There, Lorelai lays down the law when it comes to dating her daughter.

The first snow of the season hits Stars Hollow -- Lorelai's favorite time of year. The roads ice over and Rory is forced to stay with her grandparents where she introduces them to the wonders of frozen pizza. Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai runs into Max, whose car had died on his way home. Since he's stranded in Stars Hollow for the night, Lorelai takes him out to dinner and a movie, but their date is cut short when they find Lane at Lorelai's, waiting for Rory. Later, Rory returns home and is shocked to find her teacher asleep on the couch.



9 :01x09 - Rory's Dance

Rory asks Dean to the Chilton formal despite reluctance to do so. While making Rory's dress, Lorelai throws her back out and Emily, noticing the pain she's in, insists that she stay with Lorelai while Rory's at the formal. At the dance, Dean has an encounter with Tristan that leads to a fist-fight between the two. After the dance, Rory and Dean fall asleep together while reading as Miss Patty's. The next morning, Lorelai wakes up to the angry voice of Emily and finds that Rory has not returned home.



10 :01x10 - Forgiveness and Stuff

Lorelai and Rory's relationship is still a little rocky from the night of the dance, as is Emily and Lorelai's relationship, causing Rory to go to the elder Gilmore's Christmas party alone. While Rory is at dinner, Dean and Lorelai are able to work things out, and Lorelai ends up spending her evening with Luke who makes her a festive "Santa Burger". However, their evening is cut short when Lorelai gets a frantic call from Rory that Richard collapsed. With emotions running high, Lorelai finds it hard to visit her father and leans on Luke for support. Later, Rory and Lorelai reconcile their differences when they see just how valuable life is.



11 :01x11 - Paris is Burning

At Parents' Day, Lorelai tries to break up with Max, but they end up kissing while Paris watches in the doorway. In order to get the school's mind of her parents' bitter divorce, Paris exposes Max and Lorelai's relationship, much to the horror of Rory. Meanwhile, Sookie asks Jackson out.



12 :01x12 - Double Date

Lorelai reluctantly accepts, ending up with the date from hell -- Jackson's cousin Rune. Meanwhile, Rory and Lane double date with Dean and his friend Todd without telling their mothers where they actually are. Later, Luke finally gets up the courage to ask Lorelai out, but Mrs. Kim interrupts when she cannot find Lane.



13 :01x13 - Concert Interruptus

Lorelai heads up the Stars Hollow Charity Rummage Sale and ends up buying a sweatshirt that Luke donated. When she wears it around town, Lorelai is bewildered when Luke is angry to see it. Later, Sookie reveals to Lorelai that the previous owner of the sweatshirt was Luke's first serious girlfriend. Meanwhile, Sookie is given tickets to the Bangles concert in New York and Rory invites Madeline, Paris, and Louise to go with them to New York. At the concert, Madeline and Louise end up leaving to go to a party, much to the horror of Lorelai.



14 :01x14 - That Damn Donna Reed

The next day Rory comes home with a bird, who turns out to be her mid term project. She is asked to babysit Babette's new kitten, leaving Lorelai with her bird. At Babette's, Rory thinks about her fight with Dean then decides to cook dinner and dress like Donna Reed to make up. Lorelai arrives back home, she finds that the bird has escaped, and calls Luke to find it. Meanwhile, an unexpected visitor reappears in Lorelai's and Rory's life.



15 :01x15 - Christopher Returns

After the fight, Lorelai goes to her old room, to find Christopher on the balcony and old romances are rekindled. The next morning, Lorelai realizes she forgot about Luke and the paint, and apologizes. When Lorelai returns home, Christopher is waiting to ask Lorelai a question.

Meanwhile, Dean surprises Rory with a fancy dinner, then shows her a car that he's building for her. But the night takes an unexpected turn when Dean tells Rory he loves her and Rory doesn't answer him back.

During Friday night dinner, Trix offers to help Lorelai and Rory, but Emily, afraid of losing Lorelai and Rory, warns Trix not to.

Lastly, Lorelai gives Rune a job at the inn as a favor to Sookie.

Still upset over the fact that she and Dean broke up, Rory becomes very upset when she finds out that Lane and Dean are science project partners, and then becomes angered when she finds out that her mom and Max have gotten back together. She and Lorelai fight, and Rory runs away to her grandparent's house in Hartford. Wanting to hear the whole story about Dean and Rory's break up, Lorelai talks to Dean and hears what happened on their anniversary date, worrying Lorelai that Rory has the same commitment problem as she does.

Max, wanting to show Lorelai that he was serious about his proposal, surprises her with 1000 daises and asks his life-changing question again.

Tension rises between Dean and Richard when he accuses Dean of not being good enough for Rory, causing her to fight with her grandfather and causing Emily to fear that they'll lose Rory.

When Rory and Lorelai get home, Lorelai says that she is calling the wedding off, and that they are going on a road trip.

Emily confronts Mia in order to meet the woman who was such an important part of both Rory and Lorelai's life. Meanwhile, someone planted a fake murder scene in front of Doose's market. Rory tells Jess that she knows he's the culprit, how he's a jerk for letting Luke take all the heat from everyone in Stars Hollow. He agrees to lighten up and be more considerate of Luke.

Lorelai also fights with her parents when she tells them about Sherry and Christopher, and returns to Luke's in hopes of a reconciliation with him.

Darren later tells Rory that he thinks she's perfect for Harvard and he'll put in a good word with the admissions office for her. Later, the reality of college hits home for both Dean and Lorelai. Meanwhile, Taylor bullies Luke into renting him the retail space that he bought next door to open an old fashioned soda shoppe and Lane meets Dave, an aspiring musician looking for a drummer for his band.

Rory, helping Lane with her hair-dying experiment, realizes that Jess's girlfriend Shane works at the local beauty supply store, and finds herself being uncontrollably rude to the ditsy blonde. Luke confronts Jess about his relationship with Shane, and Jess admits that he doesn't really care about her, he's just with her because the girl he really likes isn't interested in him. Jess recommends that Luke do something similar and stop wasting his time waiting for Lorelai.

Lorelai goes to a charity auction that her mother organizes and meets a cute guy named Peyton. She asks her mother for his number, and she and Peyton end up planning on going to a David Bowie concert next week, but also planning a dinner date sooner. After dinner with Peyton, Lorelai realizes he's incredibly boring, but when she tells her mother that she wants to cancel her concert date, her mother freaks out. Emily is friends with Peyton's mother, and is worried that this slight by Lorelai will affect her social standing in her DAR circle. After getting yelled at by her father, Lorelai realizes how important this is to Emily, and agrees to go to the concert with Peyton if it will make her mother happy.

Lorelai drives Rory to the shower and gets talked into attending as well by Sherry. Sherry drives Lorelai nuts with her perfection and her planning and her gushing about how incredible Christopher has been through everything. Lorelai fumes on the way home with Rory and deviled eggs that they were forced to take with them. Rory suggests they throw the deviled eggs at Jess's car for catharsis. It works. When a meter maid is writing a ticket to put on Luke's boat (that is parked in front of the diner) Lorelai comes in time to put some quarters in the meter. Emily goes to the diner to talk to Luke. Meanwhile, Lane has a horrific realization about her mother's influence.

Feeling that he has missed too much and wants to get to know his newly discovered daughter April, Luke goes to have a talk with her mother, his former girlfriend Anna Nardini. Meanwhile, Lorelai sets a date for the wedding after finding the perfect dress, but she is worried by the nagging feeling that something is about to go wrong. Back at Yale, Rory happily moves into a dingy off-campus apartment with Paris and Doyle, and tries to avoid running into Logan. However, when Logan shows up at her apartment and declares his love for her, Rory breaks down.

Meanwhile, Olivia throws a 2002-themed party for Lucy, providing the perfect opportunity for Rory to confront Marty. Elsewhere, Luke learns that Anna is moving to New Mexico with April and demands equal rights to April from her.

Lorelai, upset that Emily is focused on her social calendar in order to stay calm, is relieved when Luke arrives unannounced and runs errands for Emily. When Christopher finally arrives, the scene at the hospital is more than he can handle.

Later, Christopher returns home and confronts Lorelai about the main issue hurting their marriage -- Lorelai's feelings for Luke.

Lorelai gets Sookie to cook healthy and tasteful meals for Richard and Lorelai helps Emily with Richard's various business affairs. While helping her mother, Lorelai finally admits to Emily that her marriage to Christopher is over. Meanwhile, Rory attends Logan's birthday dinner and has an awkward encounter with Mitchum who asks Rory to keep Logan on track. Logan later receives disturbing news about an online company he recently purchased. Elsewhere, T.J., Liz, and the baby stay with Luke while their house is fumigated.

Logan admits to Rory that his business venture went bad, and Rory offers him full support until Logan begins to revert back to his old ways by traveling to Las Vegas with Colin and Finn to blow off steam. Meanwhile, when Luke finds that Liz and T.J. are trying to sell his boat, he decides to make big changes in his life by taking April on a boat trip for the summer. Lastly, Lane is placed on bed rest and has to be wheeled in her bed across town to her party at Miss Patty's.

At the wedding, Emily becomes upset by how close Mia is with Lorelai and Rory. Later, Lorelai learns that Emily came to the inn several years ago to ask Mia for pictures of Lorelai and Rory from the years they weren't speaking. Logan makes a surprise visit to the wedding to get Rory to forgive him. Meanwhile, Lane and Zach ask Luke to be the godfather to their twins. Finally, when Lane goes into labor, Luke helps get everyone to the hospital.

As the citizens of Stars Hollow prepare for the annual Spring Fling festival, Rory decides to bring Logan home with her and takes him around the town. Lorelai, seeing how close the two have become, begins to worry that Logan's immaturity and irresponsibility make him someone that Rory shouldn't be with. Meanwhile, Taylor upsets the town when he blows the entire Spring Fling budget on a large hale bale maze. In the maze, Lorelai and Luke run into each other and there they admit that they each made mistakes that ultimately lead to the ending of their engagement as well as apologize for their actions. Lastly, Rory heads to an interview with the Providence Journal-Bulletin, but has a hard time making decisions that will affect not only her career, but the rest of her life.

While at the dealership, Lorelai and Luke's tension between one another mounts into a huge fight, which Lorelai takes as a good sign. Meanwhile, Paris, who has been accepted to dozens of law schools and medical schools, decides she has to break up with Doyle so their relationship doesn't play a part in her decision as to which post-graduate program to attend. Finally, Rory receives a letter that will change her future plans.

After drinks, Lorelai sings an emotion-filled song, noticeably directed toward Luke. Meanwhile, Logan returns to Connecticut after a business trip in California and pays a visit to Lorelai to discuss his future plans with Rory.

Luke's thoughtfulness and kind gestures for Rory result in an unexpected reaction from Lorelai. Later, the morning that Rory leaves Stars Hollow, Luke opens the diner early for one last Gilmore girls diner breakfast before Rory heads out into the world as a political journalist.
