Our resident bad boy, Puck, has had a bit of a cancer scare due to his mother finding a mole on his head while she was washing his hair. Unfortunately for his mohawk, they had to remove whatever hair was in the way. Of course, it really wasn't cancerous--just a simple freckle--but now one of his most important tools in regards to his identity is gone! He's being treated very differently at school due to this and Brittany didn't recognize him at all. He's not too happy about this and feels powerless. There has been a bit of a turn of the tables in regards to who he'd bully--they were bullying him now. Puck decides that to get his popularity and respect back he needs to start dating a cheerleader. He decides he wants to date Mercedes in a not so nice sort of way ("the black girl from Glee whose name I can't remember right now").
Rachel is off doing her thing and she notes that she's really not feeling too shabby. She's really, really exhausted and has a bit of a sore throat. She's even tired of having to "carry" Glee! She's tired of the solos, too?! Well, that definitely shows she's not feeling very well! Due to this, she decides to be a super spy and record the practice room secretly. She wants to figure out who's not really making an effort and it's basically half of Glee that isn't.
Elsewhere, Puck decides to make his move on Mercedes but he does it in all the wrong ways. He's super offensive about it saying things like how he did research and learned that Blacks and Jews have historically stuck up for one another and that "King Martin Luther loved Jews". Mercedes is put off by this and offended. So, that did not go so smoothly for Puck.
Will has just received the news that the group hasn't been really trying at all and he has decided to give them an assignment. This assignment entails them selecting a song that they identify with. It would represent where they are, who they are, and then they will sing the song in front of everyone in Glee.
Kurt is happy and excited about being able to have a solo. He even has selected a song already! Well, he was happy about it until he saw his father coming to get Finn to go to a baseball game. Kurt feels slighted and sad because he was not asked to go. His father tells him that he would have just made fun of the uniforms, anyway.
Rachel is the first to have her solo. She has picked The Climb by Miley Cyrus. Unfortunately for her, her voice is gone and it doesn't go too well. The coach sees Kurt in the hall and asks about him skipping the cheerleading practice. He says he is upset because he thinks he is losing his dad because he is gay. The coach tells him he's pretty much too young to know he is gay and asks if he had even experienced kissing either gender. She then tells him that just because he likes show tunes doesn't make him gay, it makes him awful. After this, Kurt decides to try to be more manly.
Rachel and Finn go to the doctor and she finds out that she has tonsillitis. The doctor things it is a good idea that she get her tonsils removed, but she thinks it would ruin her voice. Jesse is off with Vocal Adrenaline for Spring Break and Finn tries to zoom in on Rachel, but unfortunately for Finn she is still interested in Jesse. That is when Finn breaks out in song. More specifically, he sings Jesse's Girl by Rick Springfield.
At school, Puck selected "The Lady is a Tramp" to sing. He is really digging deep to try and get Mercedes interested in him. He's joined a black church and is obsessing over Sammy Davis, Jr (a black Jew). She is hardly interested until he starts his solo. He asks that she joins him and things start to progress the way he seems to want it to. Santana seems to be upset over this.
Quinn meets up with Mercedes at her locker and she tells her that it's cool if she dates Puck. She's excited about this, because then she doesn't have to be stuck with him all of the time. Despite that, she is still a bit worried about her since he could very well hurt her. Mercedes is completely in the know that he is just using her and really doesn't care. Quinn is also concerned about Santana's feelings.
Kurt has selected a song that does not suit him at all. He sings John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" and did not get that great of a response. Will is worried about his selection and tells him to not lose himself just because he think it may be easier to be someone else. Oddly enough, Brittany is into Kurt. She told him he's the only guy in school she hasn't made out with and she would really like to hook up with him.
Rachel is walking around like a zombie having a bit of a pity party. She's in her pajamas and is just drinking chicken soup. She's worried that things are going to get worse and then she'll never add up to anything if she loses her voice. Finn seems to be tired of hearing the poor Rachel act.
Kurt and Brittany are making out and Kurt tells her that her lips taste like root beer. He asks her what boys taste like and she told him her armpits and burgers. Kurt's father walks in and catches them. He is pretty confused but supports him. Elsewhere, Puck is being told by Mercedes how to date a black girl. She sends him off to get her a drink and Puck soon learns he has his mojo back when a nerd is scared of him. Santana notices and Mercedes sees it. That is when they go into the song "The Boy is Mine" by Brandy and Monica. Afterwards they get physical and Will has to break it up.
Puck has his mojo back and has the nerds lined up to be thrown into the dumpster. Mercedes isn't into it at all and he tells her that's just how it all works. He tells her that because they're so popular now that is just how it works. Elsewhere, Finn is taking Rachel to go see his friend Jon. Jon is paralyzed from a football injury and Finn really wanted him to tell her about his situation. Jon had gotten a power scooter and drove himself into a pool to commit suicide. After all of that, he had come to the realization that he has multiple talents.
Mercedes decided to quit the squad so that she can keep it real to herself. She then tells Puck that he needs to rethink who exactly he thinks he is. She doesn't like the bully and she knows he doesn't like himself, either. Brittany and Kurt are walking through the school hallways holding hands like they are a 'thing'. His father has shown up to pick up Finn and again has not asked that Kurt join them. This leads to another solo for Kurt. This solo is more suitable for Kurt as he sings "Rose's Turn" from the show Gypsy.
Kurt's father has shown up to see the end of his solo. He knows how he must have made Kurt feel and went a little far spending time with Finn and ignoring his real son. He tells Kurt that he said it was going to be hard. His father tells him that he will fight to the death for his right to love whoever he wants--it's just when he was born he dreamed of baseball games and girls. The best part was when his father said "Your job is to be yourself and my job is to love you no matter what."
Rachel goes to see Jon and to thank him for his inspiration she wants to give him lessons in singing. That is when they break out in song again singing "One" by U2.
