Duets - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Mr. Schuester has some bad news. Puck is in juvie. He drove his mom's
Volvo through the front of a convenience store, and drove off with an
ATM. Will says they have to look at this positively, and welcomes their
newest member to the group, Sam Evans. Kurt tells Mercedes that Sam is
obviously on team gay, based on his hair.

There is going to be a competition for best duet, and the winner gets
dinner for two, on Mr. Schuester, at Breadsticks. The club is very
happy to hear this. Mercedes asks Kurt who he will sing with, and he
looks at Sam. After class he approaches Sam at his locker, and
introduces himself, welcoming him to Glee Club. Kurt tells Sam he has a
gift for recognizing when it comes from a bottle, and it's obvious that
Sam dyes his hair. Sam excuses himself as Kurt is freaking him out.
Kurt apologizes, and tells Sam he should team up with him for the duet.
Sam asks aren't duets supposed to be between a man and woman. Kurt
says not always. He tells Sam to look up the menu for Breadsticks
online and then call him, because they are going to win this.

Santana and Brittany are making out. Brittany thinks they should do a
duet together. Santana says Brittany is talking too much, and when she
doesn't stop, Santana gets ready to leave. She tells Brittany she's
only there because Puck is not available to her. Brittany asks who she
is going to do her duet with.

Santana approaches Mercedes, and Mercedes asks why she would sing with
Santana when they can't stand each other. Santana says that Breadsticks
is awesome and they will win this competition. Mercedes agrees, they
will be a team.

Finn confronts Kurt. He says that if Kurt sings with Sam, it will be
like painting a bullseye on his back. Kurt says he knows Finn has an
issue with him being gay, but Finn says no. He says if he had been all
over a woman like Kurt was all over him last year, she would've been
justified in taking out a restraining order on him. Kurt says he just
wants to sing with Sam. Finn says that means Kurt doesn't care about any
of them, because if he sings with Sam, Sam will take so much crap that
he'll quit Glee Club in a week. Finn says it's up to Kurt.

Finn and Rachel sing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Finn says they could
totally win this thing, and Rachel agrees, but she looks pensive. She
says she's not really a nice person. She's selfish. She says she's only
really generous if there is something in it for her. Finn agrees, but
says he still likes her. She says Finn is so kind and open that it has
made her want to be a better person. Rachel wants to throw the
competition so Sam will win, thereby feeling like part of the team, so
they can win nationals. Finn says that's not actually selfish since
she's doing it to gain something.

Tina asks Mike to be her duet partner, but he doesn't even know if he's
a singer. He's a dancer, and everybody knows that's why he's there.
She says they're going to sing, they're going to win, and they are going
to Breadsticks for a 'normal' date. Mike asks what she means by
'normal', and Tina says all they ever do is have dim sum with his
mother. Mike says "oh, here we go again."

Brittany tells Artie she's really into him. He is perplexed, as she has
never so much as made eye contact with him. She says she knows, but for
awhile she thought he was a robot. They reach a deal. Artie can tell
everybody Brittany is his girlfriend, and she gets a duet partner.

Finn talks to Sam. He wants to sing with Kurt. Kurt sent him MP5's of
his voice, and Sam thought it was Faith Hill. Finn talked Sam into Glee
Club by telling him it would make him popular, and now Finn's telling
him it's going to get him killed. Finn says he needs to lay low until
he's popular, and singing a duet with a gay dude is not laying low. Sam
says he didn't realize Finn had a problem with gay dudes. Finn says he
doesn't but we are in 'their' world, and they have a problem with it.
For Sam, singing a duet with Kurt would be a death sentence. Sam tells
Finn that he gave Kurt his word, and in his world, that's that. Sam
leaves, and when he rounds the corner he takes a slushy in the face.
Quinn helps him clean up. She tells him the blueberry is the worst,
especially when it gets down your pants. She tells them that when it
happened to her, it looked like the creature from Avatar "down there".
Sam says he's seen Avatar six times. He tells Quinn she has pretty eyes
in the Avatar language.

Sam asks Quinn why she's in Glee Club. As head cheerleader, she is very
popular. Quinn says last year she went through a really rough time, and
they were there for her.

Kurt makes a heart healthy the dinner for Burt. Burt wants to sit at
the table but Kurt refuses. He says Burt needs to stay absolutely
relaxed until his stress test. Burt says Kurt is his stress test. Kurt
fills his dad in on Sam. He tells him Finn practically begged him not
to sing with Sam. Burt asks if Sam plays for Kurt's team, and Kurt says
"undetermined." Burt said he talked to Carol, and she said Kurt had a
crush on Finn, and he was pretty open about it. So Burt thinks Finn
might have a point. Kurt asks if his dad is saying that he should not
do the duet with Sam. Burt thinks Kurt may be pushing Sam to do the
duet with him, because he's interested in Sam. Kurt shares how tough it
is to be the only openly gay kid in school. He asks why he can't have
someone to walk down the hall hand in hand with, or slow dance with at
prom. Burt tells Kurt he wants all these things for him. But until he
finds someone as open and brave is he as, he'll just have to go it
alone. Kurt relaxes on his dad's shoulder.

Mercedes and Santana perform "Ragdoll".

Kurt sets Sam free. Sam asks if he did something to offend Kurt, and
the answer is no he's been honorable. It's not Sam, Kurt feels he needs
somebody at his level of musical ability. Sam asks who he is going to
sing with then, Kurt doesn't answer but instead points out that they
make shampoo for color-treated hair. Sam says he doesn't dye his hair.

Rachel and Finn discuss the competition. They agree there's no way they
can lose it, unless they perform a really bad song. Offensive, even.

Tina approaches Artie to be her duet partner. He informs her that he
already has a duet partner, and she is now his romantic partner as well.
Mr. Schue arrives and asks who goes first. Kurt announces that he
dissolved his duet partnership, and he is now going to sing a duet with
the most talented member of the glee club, himself. It's a song from
victor/Victoria. "Le Jazz Hot."

Sam tells Quinn he likes astronomy, because it makes all his problems
seem so small. He points out the Venus as the planet of love, and Quinn
says that's actually Mars, the planet of war. Sam asks which one they
are on, and she says "Earth". She asks Sam why she should sing a duet
with him. He starts showing her how to play a guitar, and leans in for a
kiss. Quinn pulls away. She says she's been down this road before. She's
very upset, and says she's sorry, she's made a mistake, and she doesn't
want to sing with him.

Everybody is waiting for Mike and Tina's duet. Santana says yeah hurry
it up, because she needs to get to Breadsticks. Brittany tells Santana
not to count on it. And she's mad at her, but she's still so hot. Mike
and Tina finally perform together. Mike talks while Tina sings.

Sam tells Finn that he tried to kiss Quinn, and now she won't perform
with him. Finn advises him to ask again, while Rachel tries to talk
Quinn into performing a duet with Sam. They are both successful, and Sam
and Quinn will perform together.

Artie and Brittany start rehearsing together, but Artie says he can't do
it; he's not over Tina yet. Brittany asks him to stay, and let her help
him get over Tina. She picks him up out of his wheelchair, and puts him
on her bed. Artie asks if he's about to lose his virginity and Brittany
tells him that before they do it, they're going to do it.

Finn and Rachel are dressed as a nun and a priest, singing "With You I'm
Born Again." Mercedes can't believe this is happening. When they
finish, Sam says that was really rude. Quinn says she seriously wanted
to punch both of them. Mr. Schuester tells them he's disappointed. Quinn
and Sam are next, and they perform "Lucky", and it's a hit.

Artie dumps Brittany, he think she was just using him for a free dinner.
She really wanted to go out to dinner with him and reenact the scene
from "Lady and the Tramp". She's even been practicing pushing a
meatball across the table with her nose. Artie tells Brittany that he
has it on good authority she only used him for his voice. The good
authority was Santana. Artie tells her that after his accident, he
didn't think he'd ever even be able to have sex. It meant everything to
him, and nothing to her. He told Mr. Schuester he is dropping out of
the duet competition. Brittany tries to apologize as Artie leaves.

Mr. Schuester announces that the votes are in, and Sam and Quinn are the
winners. Rachel and Finn feign being upset. Rachel approaches Kurt in
the hall and tells him they have more in common than he might realize.
He tells her that's a terrible thing to say. Rachel says she knows he's
lonely, but he's not alone. Rachel wants to sing a duet with Kurt. He
says the competition is over. She knows that; she wants to do this just
for them.

Quinn and Sam are eating at Breadsticks. He's being silly, and she
doesn't really get his sense of humor. She asks him if all this works
on the girls at his old school, and Same informs her he attended an all
boy boarding school.

Sam tries to tell her that he couldn't imagine going through what she
went through last year. He knows what it's like to have a secret you're
ashamed of. No matter what he says, it seems to come out wrong. Quinn
thinks the big secret is that he's gay, but Sam says he put lemon juice
in his hair, so the kids would think he was some cool surfer dude. She
tells him it's cute. Quinn puts the free dinner coupon in her purse,
and tells Sam he's paying. When he asks why, she tells him it's
because the gentleman always pays for the first date. In the booth
behind them, Brittany is practicing scooting a meatball with her nose.

Rachel and Kurt sing "Hallelujah, Come On Get Happy" and "Happy Days are
Here Again" for their duet.
